  1. I used to use a n A frame to load my defender. I have a friend who does traditional timber framong and got him to make me a Cruck frame that i could take apart to transport. You will also need three big ground pegs and a two bits of rope. assemble the A frame so the cross bar is sat on top of your log. knock two of your pegs in at the feet of your A frame to stop the frame from sliding when you pull up with your landy. knock the third peg in to the ground a couple of meters back from the head of the frame and tie a rope to it. then stand the frame up and tie the rope to the top of the frame so it can come up and just past the vertical so the rope is holding it in place. lay the frame back downand tie the log to the A frame cross bar ( i used a carabiner and climbing fig 8 so i could lower the log once the frame was up). run a rope from the top of the A frame to the back of your landy. Pull the frame up and the log will be lifted into the air. once the frame is vertical and the back rope is ballancing every thing untie the rope from the landy and get someone to hold it. back your truck bed under the log. lower the log.
  2. I really like that, deer are my favorite thing to carve and that is a beaut.
  3. Ant is almost right....... more like AVANT mini At forklift.
  4. Finaly got a nice day to get a pic of it in place. Friarsgrose there are no joins its all one piece.
  5. I get aot of wood and carving jobs from a tree sergeon friend if i take the big bits of wood away from a job for him it saves him alot of work. also get in touch with your local council parks dep. they arnt aloud to sell what they chop down so it all just gets dumped in the yard. my local council let peope have it as fire wood they even lift it onto a trailer for you with their tractor. i have had tons of huge bits of elm over the last few years.
  6. i used to have a yamaha chappie monkey bike to play on when i was wee, it regularly ran out of fule on me so i used to carry a can of lynx deoderant with me and if it ran out of fule i could get home by spraying lynx into the air intake which was located on top of the engine. i had a Suzuki sj410 that the clutch cable had stretched on so i had a load of washers and nuts threaded over it to extend the cable shroud i did thousands of miles like that. i used to carry a tub of spare washers to add on each time it streched a bit more. also know a chap who drove from NE scotland to the south of france in a PUG 205 he had several calour gas bottles in the boot and a length of rubber hose running from them over the back seat inbetween the front seats through the dash and into the fule line.
  7. so i decided i would make Mrs Spinters a Valentines card this year. The problem is i dont do paperand paint and pens and stuff. so i made her this. It isnt as big as it looks ( that wasnt a referance to my genitalia) its about A5 so the same size as a normal card.
  8. Dave go to B&Q and buy a bottle of their own brand anti fungiside wash. every thing i have carved in Syc recently has developed black spots after a month outside so i have sanded them down and treated them and also treated all my new carvings and not had any problems.
  9. Any body going to Avimore has to visit the Cairngorm Reindeer herd. There is a visitor center in the left hand side of the road heading up to the ski center and at 11am every day there ids a hill visit that you can join to go out onto the huge enclosure up near the ski center and meet and feed the deer who are very friendly. The whole family will love it, But wrap up warm because it can be freezing.
  10. I have a friend who does traditional tamber framing and a tip i have got from him is the trunks should be used upside down so that the rain water runs off the knobbles as if they are used the way up that it grows the rain water runs in towards the trunk and will eventually start to penetrate the trunk along the line that the branch has grown out. so if you look at your photos they are the wrong way up.
  11. i like that alot. the face is very nice. :thumbup1:think i need to have a go at a badger.
  12. the colours are just three shades of fence stain. harvest gold for the under sides, harvest brown for the main coat and the dark areas are dark oak.
  13. i like that. i went off bears for a while, just got fed up with the sight of them but i have plans for a couple this year and am looking forward to them.
  14. Hi Gnome i have a thing about deer in general i even named my son Roe!! yes i made the door and as for the stain i just used normal fence stain. you just have to know how to build up the layers of coulor.
  15. i have finally gotten round to carving a roe buck. i have wanted to do one since i started carving but just never found the time. so after almost 9 years here it is.
  16. WeeDee me thinks you should change your forum name to Fruit Loops.
  17. On 24th December at just before 6pm, the International Space Station will make a pass over the UK, lasting for about 3 minutes. Clouds allowing, the pass will be bright and clear. For the attention of all young children: On 24th December at just before 6pm you will be able to see Santa's sleigh flying through the sky.
  18. i think you have to have a fire arms variation for any type of shotgun solid shot. all the guys i know who have it have it for target shotgun shooting but they are all members of a target club. just make wax slugs or cut cartrages.
  19. My 7 year old daughter has a 410 she has been using it for about a year. the main problem we had was the length of the stock but the old boy over the road made her a new one for it, its not much more than a pistol grip with a sholder pad but the FA officer was happy enough with it. id avoid the 9mm and as for the 410 i think its far safer to learn with a break barrel. although you will have to pay more for one than a bolt action.
  20. i used to run my Landy 300 tdi on it but only in the summer as in the winter the oil got a bit thicker and i struggled to get the engine to start. i found it was best to heat the oil first as when it cools it is alot thinner. then mix it 50/50 with deisel i stopped doing it when the oil got almost as expensive as the fule. its also a bit smokey and smelly.
  21. i got my idea from this one i saw on the net
  22. iv got one i made in my carving shed. i generally put a hole in them with my .234 then leave them for a few days. my latest one is horazontal i used a metal cylinder but not a gas one. so i didnt have to cut off all the extra bits. in one end i cut a square opening into the curved round end then i cut the bottom off of a gas cylinder i had which was the same diameter. i sat it onto the first cylinder so it covers the square opening and welder on a hinge to join the 2 together. i layed it on its side and welded on 4 bits of pipe that were the legs on a broken trampoline. when it was standing i cut a hole in the top at the back end and welded on a bit of 5 inch pipe about 6 inches long. my flue then sits over the 5 inch pipe. now that it has a bed of ash in it it burns really well but it could do with a bit of fire rope around the door to help restrict the flow of air and some sort of baffle so i can slow doen the rate at which the smoke or more inportantly the heat goes up the chimny. ill take a pic and post it when i get chance. the last thing i did was to weld on 2 rods along the top so i can ballance ny kettle on top of it. it isnt pretty but it heats my shed up nicely.
