  1. I shall refrain from the comment you know I want to make and try and be helpful. Try morris lubricants chainsaw oil. Its like snot. If you put a bit on your finger then touch another finger against it you can pull them apart and there will be a strand streching between them I would think this would leave a good layeron your chain and bar.if nothing else the black should stick to your bar rather than splatter onto your log.
  2. To get you started. An ms 181 with 12inch dime tip. if you can afford it get a second saw. Somthing like a 231 or if you can strech to it a 261. An angle grinder with a sanding disk is a good tool to have and so is a black n deker power file sander.a can of spray paint water colour pencils are good for drawing on wet wood.a long straight edgeand im sure ill think of other stuff later.
  3. can i ask you both and any one else who comments what make you have.
  4. does any body have any proper knowledge about Solar PV. a friend is intending to install pannles on her house but is unsure wether to go for 2.3kw thin film or 4kw monochrystaline. she had a normal size 3 bedroom house. in my mind the higher the kw out put the better but is the extra cost worth the extra output. cheers tom
  5. Heather Jansch is nothing she can only do horses. have a look at the work of James Doran-Webb. he it the master of driftwood sculptures and he is exhibiting at the CFS.
  6. i shall third that i like the 461 alot.
  7. i hane a normal 12" stihl dime tip that is due to be replaced shortly so im going to experiment and reshape the tip of the old one there is still lenty of the harder metal on the tip so im going to try sharpening the piont a bit, and if needs be make the groove deeper. i guess if you dont try you dont know.
  8. if your on face book have a look at jordan andersons work. he has done a few variations of hunting birds.
  9. I got the price from the Stihl uk website. these ones are rrp 83.71 for a 12" and a normal dime tip is 90.23 for a 12". if they are designed for a 150 i will just stick to the normal ones as i run my dime tip on an Ms 201.
  10. just work from your own reaserch. if you start looking at and copying how other people have carved the same thing then you will just end up with your interpritarion of someone elses carving. if you work from pictures of the real thing then you will start to develope your own style. this is why all american carvers bears and eagles look the same very few of them bother to look at photos of the real thing because its easier to copy the step by step instructions out of a book.
  11. he is a lovely bloke who always talks with passion about what he does. My eldest brother is rather friendly with him as he does his expedition management when he is off on his adventures.

  13. it was £60 to get it engraved si. it took about 3 hrs to make but once i had cut out the shape from a slab i milled afew months ago i did most of the shaping with a sander. Yes i have made a canoe before..........Well to tell the truth i never got it finished. i spent days shaping it and burning out the inside. but i put a tiny hole in the side of it and whilst i left it smoldering it drew in som air through the hole and caugkt light again and the whole bloody thing went up in flames.
  14. we went to a friends wedding yesterday. they are a very adventourous couple and are saving hard for a canoe. so i carved them a paddle and had it lazer engraved. the GPS cordinates are the church.
  15. For your table top paint the whole thing with a thick coat of parafin wax and tignten a ratchet strap around the circumftance then stick it at the back of your shed for 6 months. then when you take it out strip off the wax and start sanding the wax will have soaked in and the grain will show up.
