Do a compression test first.

Common problem on the 4-mix engine, and Stihl know of it. I wrote off one of my customers engine because of the same fault and cost of repair (very badly damaged) and he complained to Stihl even though it was out of warranty and they collected it and repaired it free of charge for him. ...anyway- have you done a compression test?

.325" or 3/8" chain? .325" is std but you can have a 3/8" option.

Rung customer yesterday afternoon and explained what I had found and that it wasn't covered under warranty as I didn't consider the failure of the pump a manufacturing defect- due to the oil issue I have already alluded to. He did admit lending the saw to a friend who didn't have any chain oil, so he decanted some of his own into his friends container that had previously been used to contain old engine oil, but he assured me there was hardly any left and felt it difficult to believe I was going to charge him for the repair. When I said I had kept a sample of what was in the resevoir and it was blacker than a black thing and as thick as water he reluctantly said "he would pay on this occasion" How generous some people are.

If you aint getting paid you very quickly forget about getting the odd cold or "man flu" Been working now for over 30 years and only had four days off work through sickness. However it all depends on your illness doesn't it?

I normally stick to 1 litre or so of Jack Daniels if I want to do that.

I use the genuine Stihl tacho (can't remember which version) and have found it to be more accurate than a genuine Tiny Tach- although it doesn't refresh as quickly.

As Stihl actually apply the TimberSports' team names to their Stihl helmets then I would have thought a precedent has been set.

Haven't had one of these for a little while. Sold a brand new saw middle of last year to a light domestic user. Brought it in on Monday saying he's only used it a handful of times and now there's no oil oiling the chain. Not happy, I've sold him a load of rubbish etc etc. Told him we get very few problems with this model of saw, and told him to leave it with me- and if there was a maufacturing defect not to worry as it was still under guarantee. Starts it up with no bar and chain fitted and sure enough no oil pumping out. A quick look in the oil tank confirms there is oil in the reservoir. Whip of the clutch and remove the plastic worm drive and it's chewed up. Remove the pump and the gear drive has seized, thus causing the damage to the plastic worm drive. A very unusual ocurrence in this brand of saw and certainly on one that is obvious it hasn't done a lot of work. Fitted new pump and worm drive yesterday, re-assembled and started her up. Sure enough oil start pumping out the gallery- problem solved and a warranty claim. I leave it running whilst I return to fit the bar and chain and when I get back my bench is (unsurprisingly) starting to get covered in chain oil, but on closer inspection the oil is jet black and very fluid. I turn it off, get a glass jar and pour out the contents of the reservoir, and you've guessed it- old, used and therfore contaminated engine oil instead of chain oil. Now, I happen to know the owner is a car mechanic, so I will be discussing with him the virtues of using the correct oil and exactly how much I'm going to charge him for a new oil pump etc.

Never considered you could have the incorrect drive link thickness chain fitted. When cold would fit ok in your bar groove, but when in use would heat up and expand in the groove causing the chain to tighten and then loosen off when cooled?

I would be inclined to start cutting a few down instead of trying to climb them. At least you'll than have something to burn and keep you warm at the moment.

You could dump it anywhere on Hayling Island and I guarantee no one would notice.

Re the weight comparison- my assumption was the OP would be purchasing a new saw and as the MS260 is obsolete I compared the current weights between the MS181 and the MS261, which is of the heavier weight I mentioned. However I do accept the difference between a 181 and earlier 260 are similar. ......and that's not an opinion- just a fact.

I was told a larger chain should stay sharper could be wrong could be right dont know dont care go and pick a fight elsewhere I wasn't picking a fight, but was asking you to clarify the statement of advice you were giving the OP as I had never heard of what you were stating before and I was interested to know of the evidence supporting it. If you don't care whether your advice is correct they why give it to someone who needs it? Strange reaction.

With respect how can anyone agree with your previous post which I commented on regarding an MS181 and MS260 being similar weights- which they factually are not and you still havent answered my question to your statement that a .325" chain will stay sharper longer than the chain on an MS181. These queries aren't a difference of opinion, but fact.
