  1. I've no idea to be honest, it's a bit outside my field, Lime's not a wood I've ever had a use for unfortunately.... Have you tried web searching, Lime blanks for carving seem to come up as a mail order thing....?
  2. Presumably it's Whitney Sawmills...? Timber Merchants UK - Oak Beams, Dry Hardwood Timber, Oak Flooring, Skirting & Cladding - Whitney Sawmills
  3. I would imagine it's less to do with melting the fibres and more to do with them getting jumbled up. Aren't they supposed to de 'dried flat' like a woolly jumper to make sure everything stays where it should be and not get bunched up? A solution would probably be to tumble dry them so they're still damp and the stopping can be smoothed out, then spread them out and finish them off by air drying...
  4. I always use a bowline, I find it quicker to tie than a Fisherman's [and untie to get back through a FS if I'm changing over in the tree, rather than pulling up the whole tail from below the hitch] and I leave a nice long loop to clip into so the knot itself is above my friction hitch. Fig 8 in the tail, job done. I tried buntlines & anchor hitches and found them a bit 'permanent' for doubled rope with a friction management device at the top if moving the anchor....

    spikes

Spikes are usually covered in the climber's talk section. Ref the £80 ebay spikes, I had - have - a set of these. Use the forum search for 'cheap spikes' and you'll find a couple of threads about it. Some people have found they snapped at the fixing holes in the shank. Some have found them to be uncomfortable. Some have found the gaffs very soft. My personal experience was of the second 2 issues. Thankfully I never experienced catastrophic failure. They're honestly not very good, being absolutely diplomatic about it. I used them for a while on a 'needs must' basis but have since bought a set of ali Bashlins for similar money off eBay. That said, while using them I got on fine, discomfort aside. I wouldn't recommend them particularly but as I have said before, I'm still alive! Better off keeping your eyes peeled for some used 'proper' spikes, or save another hundred quid and get some Distels. What's another £100 in real terms these days anyway? Have a weekend at home reading a book instead of going out....!
  6. Advice please... Saw starts a treat now as per standard starting procedure. Also runs 'ok' at high revs, state of tune notwithstanding. Won't idle though, nor does it have any torque really. What's the reason? Do I need to overhaul the carb? Will piston rings help power? Thanks!
  7. Where exactly in Brum? A lad I went to college with works as a rep for for Selwood, he's the cheapest we've found. Will send you his number...
  8. Aaahhhh! With you now! No, I'd do it the same as you and use normal wedges, or open it up with a felling lever and stick a wedge of timber in there.... Some things are just a nuisance, this is one of those things....

    Stihl 019T

I finally managed to pick one of these up again. Been after one for ages and ages and AGES.... Came off eBay from a local lad, 99.9999% sure it's the same saw I considered having a punt on a few weeks ago 'oop North' but the postage put me off [although his description suggest otherwise ]. I've paid the same as it would have cost that time any way, so, by the by. Anyway, it was sold as not working, I did manage to fire it up yesterday which was a bonus, although it wouldn't run. Haven't tested it but it feels like it has good compression [i bought one of these new years ago and this one doesn't seem utterly worn out compared to my recollection of that so things are looking promising], need to get a compression tester to be sure. Also ordered a Tiny Tach to get it set up right [when the time comes, and to give my other saws a going over too] Going to strip it down and go through it but I'm confident there's nothing terminal wrong with it. It does have a few other minor issues with it which I'm going to put right, so if anyone does, by some small miracle, have ANY parts for one of these lying about which they'll sell me, please let me know, anything appreciated. Also, I'd forgotten this, but there's no strop loop on the saw, I guess you'd just choke a strop round the handle. Anyone ever fixed an eye to the back of the casing itself? The COG wouldn't be quite right on the handle, and I like to 'dangle straight' wherever possible....
  10. If you're just working on the ground, you may as well buy yourself some new Stihl economy trousers, [NEW, sweaty ballbag free!], for 50 quid ish plus VAT. I have had a couple of pairs, they're nice cheap trousers and last well. Ref the saw AVOID, with a capital AVOID. You'd be better off buying something like these... Stihl MS250 CHAINSAW | eBay stihl 025 chainsaw | eBay STIHL MS 260 C PROFESSIONAL CHAINSAW 14" BAR 2010 MODEL IN WORKING ORDER | eBay STIHL MS260 PROFESSIONAL PETROL CHAINSAW / Chain Saw in G.W.O & V.G.C | eBay HUSQVARNA 236 38CC PETROL 14" CHAINSAW NEW MODEL | eBay Husqvarna chainsaw 141 | eBay Have fun. And well done for asking!
  11. If it's pinching, could you start the other side and do it as a step cut instead?
  12. Stihl do indeed make a full wrap handle for the 460, although it's not listed individually as an accessory in the catalogue. If you get a copy of the latest Stihl catalogue at the end of the professional saw section the 460R comes after the 880, the full R accessory kit is 300 quid, but that's the depth limiter etc. Contact a dealer to see if they can get you one on its own, I'm going to see if I can get hold of one as well... I often swap hands when I'm cutting though...
  13. Even the bloke who made it is terrified of it! That's hilarious!
  14. Only just decided to dignify this with a response Rob? I never get excited over postage costs, it's still cheaper than collecting it myself.... I appreciate the vendor making the effort to dispatch something, I hate doing it! Anyway, postage to the Highlands will be even MORE EXPENSIVE when it's outside not just civilisation, but the whole EU....!!!!
  15. There was something very similar came up on a Groupon or KGB offer recently, was quite tempted, Was an outdoor weatherproof one, did stills as well as live broadcast, had night vision as well from memory, about the same price. Damn, I should have bought a couple!
  16. Roundup can save a harvest! Did ours this year that's for sure.... I wonder if that's why cancer rates are now 1 in 3 [according to what I saw on the telly]?
  17. Top lads, we used to toss about with stuff like this.... the most fun you can have with your clothes on as a young lad....
  18. That Tanaka I have is eaven heavier than an MS200T, same CC roughly, less power. BHP/KG ratio not great!
  19.:lol: Trading standards must have got him...!
  20. You ain't fooling anyone Adam... we ALL know what sort of phonecall THAT is...!!! Is your missus looking over your shoulder...
  21. France has a lot going for it... it's socialist infrastructure is the one turn off for me! Oh, and ref the pole.... :001_tt2::001_tt2: VISUALISE schmisualise..... It's circular, Happy... etc etc... I get it in the tree eventually, but I'd really like to have something in my box with which I could deploy a line where I want it within 1 minute every time, rather than after anywhere between 2 minutes with a good straight throw into an open canopy, and half an hour of finger burning frustration through a tangle of unkempt growth.... I think that with some garden shed ingenuity this could well be my bargain bucket solution to the quite astonishingly pricey Big Shot I covet so badly...
  22. I've had a little play with this now, initial results with a standard 10oz throw bag were disappointing in hand held mode, but hooked over the top of a telescopic painting pole exhibited great promise....! I'm going to have a better fiddle this weekend, I think what I may end up coming back here with is a 30 quid Big Shot style contraption..... Whatever happens it's going to save me a load of bother!!!
  23. So is it or isn't it..?
  24. So if you accidentally snatch the knot free mid traverse, what happens Kevin? I do like it though....
  25. I've always used an MS260 with a 16 inch bar & full chisel chain for exactly what you're doing with your 390, munches through it happily, done some big fells with it [for it's size] as well over the years... Good little saw. From what I've read I believe the 261 is a worthy replacement, if a little 'fancy'.... I also have an 025 running the same chain on a 14" bar and that's a super light little saw as well, but from the 'Farmer' range.
