  1. I'm not saying sean doesn't have a magic camera, but I have to admit I faked mine with photoshop. Start with a square cropped pic of a tree, so you only have half a tree vertically. Then copy and flip it vertically and put the two together. Then copy and flip them horizontally, put them all together so you have a mirror of the original 'quarter' on two planes. Then rotate on it's side. You can do all sorts of different effects to it, but I used a water effect filter to pinch and pull the central vertical line to emphasise the face. Hope that explains my method at least.
  2. In homage to you Sean, this is my offering.
  3. Very cool, some of them look like negatives.
  4. Don't know how near but this got posted today. Ibc pallet tank ArbTrader Ah! just seen it's Hampshire!
  5. Looks good. What kind of willow was it? I've carved white willow once before and found it quite nice to carve. That was very green and full of water too. Took detail quite well although was very unforgiving against the grain.
  6. Nice, is that a slick? Looking at probably 2" in straight and a couple of gouges. May even go bigger if pos. If I was going to buy off the shelf I'd get these Sculpture Tools Can't buy at present but if you think it's do-able pm some prices and I'll start building up a fund for them. Cheers, Si PS love the axe in your avatar.
  7. They look really nice, do they keep a good edge? I'd be interested in having some BIG carving chisels made when I've got some spare cash, is this something you'd be up for? Was thinking maybe leaf springs would be good for them, but I'll be swayed by your expertise. Cheers, Si
  8. Quality work mate:thumbup: Was going to ask if it spins, still trying to erase the image of you melting into it in your birthday suit:argh:
  9. Interplay qx3 is a kids toy microscope for the computer. I bought one a few years back off ebay. It's not brilliant but you can get good pics if you mess around with it. Had a quick look on ebay and there's a few on there, could be worth a look for a tenner? http://http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_kw=QX3%2B&_kw=Microscope
  10. Cool, cheers Rob. If anything comes through I'll send a little pendant your way mate.
  11. Post them up when you do, I only had my camera phone. Yes it's a great place, was my first time and the kids had other distractions so more visits on the cards. Quite a bit of wood knocking about that I'd like to carve too. I did find the direction signs within the park confusing but that could just be me.
  12. Once it's sanded and oiled you ought to get a really high quality photo done and start selling prints, you'd sell plenty I'm sure.
  13. Apologies if this has been posted before. Went to look at the Allerton Oak in Caulderstones Park Liverpool at the weekend. Supposed to be 1000yrs old.
  14. Check that you haven't got http// twice in the link, that could be the prob.
  15. Very useful post Tommy, is that the gorilla glue you mentioned in the last pic of the repair in action? It can't be but it looks like builders spray foam, I'm guessing it's much better than exterior pva. Did you have to screw and ratchet strap as well?
  16. Finished the fox at last! After careful consideration of the general consensus that the rabbit looked like a big c**k I decided to emasculate the fox and said goodbye to the cute bunny. I feel better for it, can't say the same for the fox though:001_tongue:
  17. Doh! Good job that was only on the pc, What a massive B@lls up that could have been! Any chance of turning the tree around?
  18. Re: To Coronet or Not to Coronet, now that is a question
  19. Cha-ching!! that's the way to do business:001_smile: Good stuff!
  20. He he, Thanks Chris, yes it is that very one indeed. Chuffed that you like it, and good luck with your retraining BTW. Cheers, Si
  21. now I've got you hooked. As for the abstract element the worlds your oyster. Maybe the tree unfurling, with undulating flames emerging or plaits interlocking. Interspersed with bubbles and blobs. Any thing that would create lots of narrow crevices for the wildlife. Maybe even turn the tree into an ent:biggrin: Si
  22. Could be mate, it's a cracking piece. I was thinking of something abstract myself, that would expand on the coronet style but would either look like it grew out of the tree or was a part of it.
  23. Cheers Adam, Yes the cost is always going to be an issue, as with doing coronets too I guess. Not every customer will pay the extra for a coronet never mind a sculpture. It would have to be a certain kind of client on the right tree with the right kind of access. I was just thinking(typing) out loud, looking for some sort of cross over between the two fields. Would be a good remit for creating a piece though, something with a useful purpose, creating a habitat as well as a sculpture. Si
  24. I'm sure this would be defeating the object of going to the trouble to make these cuts look like natural breaks, but what are your thoughts on carving sculptures at these points? As I understand it apart from the aesthetics, they are done to allow food and shelter for all the bugs and beasties. Why not on some occasions make a feature of it,say for example a flowing abstract form that can do the same job providing shelter for the afore mentioned bugs? Has anyone tried this? and if so can you post some pics up? Cheers, Si
