  1. Certainly make some nice carvings mate. What's its worth of course is what someones willing to pay. I wouldn't buy it standing but I may have bought the stick when down, providing I could mill it where it was. This would saVe you a lot of time and money, and I probably would of offered around £250-350 for it, depending on length. But like I say this isn't what its worth, just what I would offer. I'm sure big j will tell you the going rate for cedar at the moment. My guess would be about £3 cu/ft. James
  2. Completely agree with big j, such a waste of beautiful cedar wood. I and many others would be glad to mill a tree like that.
  3. I did the same 10 years ago in construction. My boss was mire than helpful letting me use his pickup and tools on weekends if I needed them, but he wasn't really interested in the small jobs I was doing then anyway. I would recommend a trip to the beer garden aFter work oneday, and be honest. He may be more helpful than you think. Afterall he was in your posistion a few years ago I'm sure. James
  4. Depends what tools you got. Best way probably vertical splitter. More fun cheaper way. Hit it a lot with an axe.
  5. That looks like a lovely machine, what will the grab lift?
  6. This is whats been paying my bills for the last 4 months. Old stable converted into a classroom/ function room. All lime/hemp plaster, lime washed. Wood fibre insulation and wall boards, old doors converted to one French door and one curved window. Pellet stove heating it and accimodation next door. Nearly done. Oak floor and fiddling to go.
  7. That's some garage mate well done.
  8. Only sea fishing for me bud, never enjoyed coarse except pikeing. Would like to learn fly fishing though.
  9. Thanks mate very helpful, I was thinking if fabricating something complicated but 2 workmates and 2 bits of 4x2 would suffice.
  10. No worries bud. Glad to help.
  11. Imo 8.95 is far to low for an experienced skilled worker. I work in construction not arb, but a labourer is likely to get 8p/h. Most tradesmen working for big companies work on piece work, supply own tools and transport etc, good tradesman will be earning 100 minimum unless they go to work half asleep. A subbing brickie don't need a lot of tools. I wiuldnt work for your wages, but your wages are set by people willing to work for them. I guess by the time you include all the benefits of being employed over self employed your wages are a lot higher.
  12. Yes that would be a test alright, keep wanting to test my mills in this way, but nobody's obliging enough to supply the elm.
  13. Nice one theo.
  14. What do you use to hold the half up in such a way that you cab still mill most of it, without lots of rejigging. Also interested in others techniques for stabilizing small logs for millling without fouling mill too soon.
  15. Tool of the year award I reckon. Love it:)
  16. Good size for laburnum , how long/straight is it?
  17. I wonder how many times people who wear watches check them a day? I go by how hungry I am for breaks, but alwYs have radio on, so have good idea imof time from this. If I have important appointment I set alarm on my phone.
  18. Is that with the new bands on the ripsaw alec? Looks a lovely finish.
  19. Looks ok, but no adjustment for angle, and what about different file sizes?
  20. Did you do that alone, or did you have a camera shy helper?
  21. I'm not sure of the official ruling, but have heard similar to you. However a few years ago(working in construction) I worked for the same company as a subby for about 5 years, 95% of the time. Never heard anything about it, but maybe just lucky.
  22. Top work slack. Dervish, I was thinking about a mobile steam box the other day and came up with a design in my head around a metal dustbin and some old flue pipe. Basically get a dustbin with a fire type lid, cut a hole in the middle of flue pipe slightly larger than the spiggot on lid. Use a bungee chord to hold lid and flue on dustbin. Make a simple folding trivet for dustbin. Make small fire under dustbin, fill with a littlewater and your away. Towels Will seal holes at end of flue, so it doesn't matter if wood is stcking out. When your done everything Will fit nicely in bin for easyish transport. Hope this helps. James.
  23. Thanks, I was tempted to use bed rail hooks so no fixings were visible, but Will have a think about your method too. Shop bought dowels are rubbish, never straight grain. I make me own if they need to be strong.
  24. Nice work mate, about to start work on a walnut bed soon(under orders from the woman). I'm interested what method you used to fix head/foot board to the rails. Thanks James
