  1. I do a bit of smoking, use the planings from my thicknesser, which I dampen a little, always use oak or apple. Apple is better.
  2. Pretty sure its Paul hc's mill, sent a pm to ask but he hasn't got back yet.
  3. My saw did it when the bolts on the cover were a bit loose.
  4. Yes mate the house is there still. Went to a auction last sat of furniture maker retirement. They were giving the stuff away, stocked up on pippy oak , yew ash and a pallet of oak burr, average price was about £5 cu/ft. Wish I had more storage. No cedar though, that would have been nice.
  5. Doesn't sound very free to me!
  6. Why do you care that much what firewood you burn, we regularly burn apple and hornbeam and its just another log on the fire.
  7. Live in winslow near Milton keynes. I might take you up on that offer. Flat out for next few weeks, but will drop you a pm at some point soon. I'm trained in site carpentry, first and second fix, but anything more is self taught. The bench and table you made I could make to the same standard, and is my kinda style. but I lack the finesse for the sideboard. Some tuition would help there, but im undecided if I want to make that style of stuff. Saying that I love the craftsmanship, just not the classic style. I do crave knowledge in all things wooden, living or dead.
  8. A hammer should work! But does it matter for firewood?
  9. Im thinking about doing a course myself, how much did it actually teach you, or is it just about the quals?
  10. It's for a remote receiver for hands free operation. Or is it for an auxiliary engine to make it as good as a stihl.
  11. It needs to be used, not left to rot! Hopefully someone will collect it.
  12. Who you calling pastie!. Picture was taken in June a couple of years ago. Probably not a situation that you arb types suffer with, but that year having worked outside all winter, my summer job was 100% inside. Only time I saw the sun was when I took a trip to the bushes for relief. Unfortunately the same this year. Should finish my current inside job in early august, ready for the winter outside. Better hope this hot spell holds out for me. Still I only work 3 days a week now so its not too bad this year.
  13. I've got two lime butts, what would be the favourite dimensions to mill for the carving market?
  14. What do you want lime for, not great for milling is it? Do you sell it?
  15. Loving the leaf bench! Any chance of a pic from the back?
  16. What do you sell your cedar for big j?
  17. I never burn, just tan. Never wear sun screen, lived in Thailand for two years and never a problem there either. So my question is are you still at risk of skin cancer in my situation? James
  18. That's an excellent idea and a good looking prototype, I was originally going to make my own alaskan out of metal I have lying around but ended up buying one, having seen your efforts I may not buy a mini mill and try my hand at a little plagiarism;) Wouldn't the bolts be better off on top?
  19. Cedar is a great wood to mill and work for external uses. Milled a wrc a few years ago but never milled a deodar or lebannon but would love to. Isn't the highest value wood, but if he's collecting for free he's getting a great deal, gotta be worth a drink at least. Any cedars in bucks id be there in a flash. Top work 7devil. I assume you passed with honours. What course did you do?
  20. Alec, do you think a 044 would run a 24" Alaskan well on a full width cut? James
  21. Thanks bud, its looking good. Do you plane the veneer by hand or through the thicknesser? Why so many pieces of veneer? James
  22. That's a sweet job mate, flat as a pancake. Did you bed em straight on the mud, or sand? Why choose sleepers over type 1, aren't they a little expensive? James
  23. Be interested in the smaller pieces bud. Will give you s call later tonight. James
  24. Ok I'm with ya.
  25. stumpy, Check out this link, Its from one of rob d sites, he one of our chainsaw milling regulars on here. It may inspire you a little as to the design of the benches, but it may also show you the skill involved in the kinda cuts you are going to require. i dont think what you want to do is the easier option. Its also something that requires alot more skill and experience with a saw than just through and through planking. Im not sure it ssomething you should consider your self with inappropriate tools and experience. Saying this,i must agree with the path your taking with these sticks and what your suggesting is more appropriate than milling. Having never undertaken a project like this i can only guess how long it would take, but every cut would need careful and precision setting up and i can imagine it taking all day to make the cuts you want. Try and find someone near you with a mini mill and an alaskan and see what you can arange. A post in the milling forum would help. un fortunately your too far away for me to offer you mylack of expertise as assistance. Good Luck with your project, and dont forget to keep us updated with your progress. James treet| Treet Furniture treet| Treet Benches
