  1. Had to finish off tractor proofing an outgrown hazel/thorn hedge today. Looked at rain radar and forecast.....decided to start first thing....... On completion removed helmet to feel first drop of rain. Chucked it down for rest of day. Sat here in front of Rayburn feeling ever so slightly smug! Happy Vernal Equinox everyone btw.
  2. I was going to question that too. I have two wood fired pizza ovens and put in whatever wood is available?...............surely in a retained heat oven operating at the correct temp, wood type is irrelevant?
  3. I know someone from Canada who was involved with Ice Road Truckers in the early days............DONT believe what you see! Must admit I hate modern telly. It like just totally depresses me. Wouldn't lose sleep if I didn't wake up tomorrow morning.
  4. Heard the following once or twice regarding areas of softwood which had been clear felled. "They've absolutely decimated the place" Well that would be one tree in ten removed then wouldn't it. Argh
  5. Dike is a word I only use when describing lesbians...which I got into trouble for recently from the 21 yr old who works for me. Two lesbian friends happily use the term but apparently not all dikes.....sorry.......lesbians are happy with it. BUT...and this is the point of this post (so to speak) I would just like to say a thank you to Rover for the above post...I had never thought of the dikes being the banks created to defend against water rather than the watercourse itself. I'm going to annoy people with that later:)
  6. I'm getting a bit confused here as I think are others. The Countryside and Wildlife Act 1981 makes it illegal to disturb nesting birds ( only the wording was amended by the CROW act to add 'recklessly'), which includes birds carrying nest material. If you carry on work after seeing a blue tit go into your soon to be layed hedge carrying a twig, you are in breach of the above act. Collared doves for example can breed all year, so if one is nesting in your hedge in December, you must stop work. The above is the LAW.....not guidelines. Should you be challenged about disturbance you will have to prove you are competent to and have taken all steps to make sure your hedge is free from nesting birds. "Well I never noticed the birds going in and out of the hedge" isn't a defence. As to the welfare of late layed hedges and the so called season, I'll leave that the the more experienced.
  7. Trouble with that is dealers still nick it and flog it on!
  8. As far as I'm aware it was Herbert Anslinger who was backed by DuPont ( makers of synthetic fabric......and GoreTex) who got it made illegal in the 30's. Hemp is an amazing plant with a myriad of used. It's a shame it has THC in it in a way (the bit that gets you stoned) as it would be very widely grown. Its everyone's loss that it isn't legal.
  9. Thanks for all the info. I am familiar with vegetative propagation so just mentioned seeds, which was silly really as it won't be just me doing it. I will have a look at the books mentioned too.
  10. Thompsons Directory used to run a competition along these lines... A few years ago an opticians won it called.......... Spex In The City
  11. I am looking to set up a local tree growing scheme with community involvement. So two questions..... Firstly has anyone experience with the above? Secondly, what book(s) would you recommend on the collection and propagation of British tree seed? Ta in advance
  12. I was told by my local dealer that the 555 is same saw as a 560 but tuned less on the chip, slight power difference. I asked why it can't be retuned by as they have all the Husky electronic gear (which apparently has never been used in anger) to which I was told that the tuning software is serial no specific, so will only work to factory default power settings?

    660 :)

    How? Plz
  15. Surely he could cut twice as fast with a top handled saw in each hand? Now. That WOULD be impressive! (Slow coach)

    First saw

He's not the biggest lad which makes me think the 346/550 route would be best to start. As no doubt I'll be buying it ( to be paid back tho!) he needs a top quality saw IF it will fit into a multi saw set up, which the ones mentioned will, and I don't mind him using my 365 should needs arise. Cheers chaps....but keep em coming.
  17. Same here...iPad (iOS 7.0.6)
  18. I don't care what they cost to produce surely it's our right to access them freely, be it as a punter or contractor. It is our British Standard for goodness sakes. It's a bit like voting for a political party whose manifesto costs £200 to read! (Grey git.....I'm out of the stocks now....what kept you? Traffic lights/roadworks?)
  19. Infamous? Not with me.....never 'eard of it. As a 660 owner I'm concerned.

    First saw

I'm sure this has been asked about before but can't seem to find anything and models are always changing anyway so here goes....... The lad that helps me out wants a saw to start with and enable him to do his basic tickets, so what is a good first saw that will eventually fit into a multi- saw set up? Years ago I started with a Sachs-Dolmar (50ish cc machine if I remember correctly) with an 18" bar. Used for a bit then later complemented with a smaller husky and an 066. They got nicked but were eventually replaced with similar (346xp ( which he isn't going near....it's my baby), 365 & MS660). Reading another thread it suggested than a 346xp would run an 18" bar if needed (?) so would something like that with a 13" & 18" bar make a good first saw? Any suggestions gratefully received.
  21. What go around.....come around!
  22. The grammar was terrible. I had originally put " does this count" but then realised it was not specific enough. So I changed it to " these chainsaws" instead of the "this". I failed to alter "does" but some time later noticed. I tried to edit but was unable. I imagine there is a limit on how long after a post it it editable. So well done for spotting my crass mistake. I am currently walking into the village wearing shoes that are too small whilst listening to Radio 2 and intend putting myself in the stocks for the rest of the day to be pelted with rotten vegetables by disgruntled rustics, as a way of paying my debt to The Grammar Police and cleansing myself.
  23. These are wonderful things for getting crud off before compressed air blasting. Horse hoof brush/pick. Cost.....£1
