  1. Only be folk who have never eaten them. 3 to 4 lb jack pike are wonderful poached in milk and herbs. Take big bones out, put flesh through a sieve and mix with mash tattie. Season and form into fish cakes. Fandabbidozy

    Cuckoo

Walked along the river here yesterday and saw a bird drop out of a tree, fly across river and over meadows. Thought to myself that looked like a cuckoo, but too early. One minute later heard it call.......very happy......and early for us. First time I've ever seen first one of the year before hearing it! Btw....it was a male.
  3. Fair point regarding cost etc.......didn't realise it was that price. My concerns would be stability when loaded to the top of the bolsters and being a bit more picky......the cross sectional area of the welding to the floor, with it been the focus of possible repeated stresses from very heavy pieces of timber being dropped/chucked in......as is bound to happen.
  4. "...........i have reported those dealers to Stihl. If they persist then they will have their dealership taken away from them. " Might be a blessing in disguise judging by Stihl's current products and attitude.
  5. Sounds a fine idea.....get in touch.
  6. A relict hedgerow ash One of the largest coppiced alders I've encountered Another hedgerow ash (once laid) Old hedge line alder and rowan Crab apple.....I think this is one tree that has been coppiced (But don't know why the pics are small?)
  7. It doesn't look up to the job for me. Even on flat ground if you run over a log with one wheel it's going to be a bit tippy. I've used a Logic tandem axel for 20 plus years.......in our very steep woods..........absolutely brilliant!
  8. Which they were using instead of the said historical mixture, which can't of smelled any worse!
  9. I was up at Beamish Museum yesterday (oh the glory of having kids) and in one of the houses they were cleaning the brass......which according to the polishers used to be done with a mixture of wood ash, piss and something else which I can't remember.
  10. I was going to contradict you but when I was looking for a quote to paste in, I found a clause which does indeed allow the hunting of rabbits with dogs, although I'm sure there was a case recently where amongst other offences someone was charged with the pursuance of bunnies. Just goes to show....what a badly written piece of legislation the Act is and how confused I am? From Gov website........ Hunting and the law You can be fined up to £5,000 if you’re found guilty of illegal hunting. Hunting with dogs You can’t hunt some animals, like foxes, hares and deer, but you can hunt under certain conditions, for example: stalking and flushing out - but only to control pests and only if they’re shot as soon as possible afterwards hunting rats and rabbits retrieving hares that have been shot rescuing wounded animals, as long as they weren’t wounded on purpose
 drag hunting and trail hunting
  11. Spindle moulders...........the cutter blocks...anything that weighs that much which revolves that fast........AT GROIN HEIGHT.......... NO NO NO Also compressors....that amount of air SHOULD NOT be in such a small space.

    Otters

The latest research suggests this may not be the case I have heard, but would need a net trawl to pull up specific papers.
  13. Had some elm boards which I had milled and stacked for over 10 yrs....in a totally rain free windy shed....m/c last spring? Between 18 & 22%. Thought it should be a lot lower until I started looking at local weather records and that calculator!
  14. It's called "Dutch" elm disease because it's equally shared between English and Wych Elm
  15. There seems to be no evidence that cats get stuck in trees......it's our interpretation of their choice to be up a tree...leave em alone. See similar thread a week or two ago!
  16. For Sale. Complete set of Encyclopedia Brittanica. No longer needed as wife knows everything............ (As someone once said!)
  17. Have a look at the Arbtalk thread entitled "keeping logs outside through winter". There is a link to a calculator which gives you an idea as to how dry you can expect to get logs in relation to your locations relative humidity.
  18. Artic load of timber seasoned/unseasoned wanted delivered to DL12 (County Durham). Please PM details. Thanks
  19. "To shop around for the cheapest price and then blackmail the local dealer is ethically wrong. It is also wrong to buy at the cheapest price and then expect the local man to provide spares and service for that product. It is even more wrong to slate the local dealer for his service when he has not been supported in the first place." Not sure about the term "blackmail" it's a bit strong, the dealer does have a choice whether to supply you with a saw or not! But can't disagree with the rest.
  20. Ask him why there is such a difference in price?
  21. £700?????? He's probably quoted for a 560xpg as my dealer did......he couldn't understand how the net price I'd found was so much cheaper until we realised he was quoting for the wrong saw. The way I do it is to get my local dealer to quote then have a trail on the net. Go back to the dealer and ask how close he can get. If it's within about 10% or so he gets a sale..........and the servicing and supplies the spares and consumables etc etc and he knows he will get follow up business and loyalty. This means I may pay some extra, BUT if I need something fixing quick or have any problems there is always a solution (so far). That's worth a lot to me, a lot more than a supposed USA/UK price difference.
