  1. Setting up a CL site.. http://www.caravanclub.co.uk/media/876512/landownerleafletprintcopy.pdf
  2. Loader upright now, not a scratch, driver now has clean underwear on! All is good.....AND it's only spitting with rain and windy.
  3. If you have accessible woods, non sensitive etc etc looks good. I've gone smaller scale using a quad as a forwarder, load straight onto saw bench, crosscut, then either load or split as required and (usually) into m3 bags on flatbed and back to yard. You earn yr dinner though! Reckon for 2 of us we could do 6+ bags a day easily and that is from standing. Ideal for our woods that are in a WIGS.
  4. Absolutely hammering down this aft, and a lad managed to turn a big JCB loader over on the mud! Happy days. No injuries btw, apparently none to loader either.
  5. Lovely afternoon here, calm and sunny. Dusk felt like spring..............but surely it's on its way?
  6. Could this be one of the greatest errors of our time? Probably not!
  7. Thanks for the advice. Piling brash is a no-no as it just creates habitat for buns. We plan to protect cut stools with 2" weldmesh panels situate at least 1m from the stool. Relatively cheap but effective, as used on some alder coppice with top results. So I glean from the replies....thanks again, cut low, protect and remove as much canopy as practical. Off we go......................
  8. PeNdunculate is used in many tree books including the FC's Managing Native Broadleaved Woodland. I've always used pedunculate but seems both are in common usage.
  9. English oak, pedunculate or pendunculate?
  10. Ahh I see. Thought I'd missed something!
  11. I've got a few poplars and lots of larch/ pine need dropping in DL11. Pm me if yr interested.....btw it's part of a WIGS so we're not looking to make a profit!
  12. Can't seem to see avatars in any larger form (iPad4, Arbtalk app), is this poss?
  13. Intrigued to see you said "hazel stools". What do you mean?
  14. It will be grown for wildlife and diversity as you put it. Can't see any commercial opportunity in harvesting off a 45 degree hillside 700ft up in the Pennines. My main concern is stools not regrowing due to low light rather than good end product.
  15. The old oak above as sketched by SWAAG member and artist Jocelyn Campbell http://jocelyn.swaag.org/#!album-0-55 The SWAAG website has lots of Swaledale Tree info on as well as lots of Jocelyn's drawings http://www.swaag.org/index.php
  16. Some more detail....
  17. Found this yesterday see......http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?p=1047485#post1047485 Here's the same pic It's from a very old oak pollard, presumably pedunculate, but no stems on either leaves or cups? Any help appreciated.
  18. There are only about 60 stools, and it is only going to be 'conservation coppicing'. I've never understood the idea of piling brash to stop rabbits. Every time we construct a brash pile it is occupied by bunnies within weeks. In areas of low rabbit population this may work, but not here. No coppice groups nearby. We don't have much coppice in the North Pennines, but there is a move to get what we have back in cycle, partially due to the Yorks Dales National Park.
  19. I would appreciate a 'conversation' feature for private messages so you can see what your PMer and you have been on about........ iPad OS btw
  20. The second pic above is I presume pedunculate oak...but confused by both leaves and acorns having no/little stem. Any help appreciated. Not familiar with ancient oaks.
  21. Some more recent finds Largest syc coppice I've found in the Dale, A4 pad for size comparison. Oak pollard...c4m dbh According to local Archeology group (SWAAG) the oldest oak in the Dale, but apparently planted(?)
  22. Ta for that. I have the FC book he co-wrote in 2003 with Howe, but that is general silvicultural and management of coppice woodlands, so the hazel specific link will be very useful.
  23. That's great thanks but which research, do you have a reference? The reason I ask is that we are having a WIGS management plan drawn up and I want to make sure we are 'watertight' on it.
