  1. We are nr Richmond...so prob too far.
  2. Sun would be nice.....never mind a sunset!
  3. We have some out of cycle hazel to coppice (biggest stems c8" dia but most smaller) on a 30degree south facing slope which currently has more than 50% high canopy cover in summer, of that about half is ash. How much shade would you expect the stools to cope with and should they be reduced slowly with a few cuts over a few years or coppiced from the off?
  4. Yorkshire is a big old spot (and the hardest county in England....). Where is you and how far you prepared to come?
  5. Found this in North Norfolk. Presume its self penned as I tried Googling to no avail.
  6. That's quite something (if accurate?) Swaledale has not had more than 1/2" of rain during a day since last year, but only one dry day since 17th dec!
  7. Am I the only one who read the above and expected a picture of Wellington boots?
  8. We have had lots of rain, as expected in the North Pennines at this time of year, but no proper flooding and very little wind of late, so the lands not drying. Can't get more than 20ft into the wood with Landy as it's a bog hole. Had to pull it out with Kawasaki mule this aft. Packed up early removing squirrel damaged beech as sick of being muddied up to knees, makes everything lots more tiring and difficult. Now sat next to Rayburn with a cider, lots better. Roll on some cold dry clear weather!
  9. I haven't expressed a single pro or anti-American view. I supported someone's dislike of large corporations, I corrected the reporting of a judges verdict and went on to draw a distinction between Americans and Americanism. Please re-read the thread and direct your criticism at the correct person, and withdraw your accusation that it is I who has turned this political, anti-American and boring.
  10. You say Americans and Americanism are impossible to separate, but then say "the majority of Americans......." Congratulations, you have just separated a minority of Americans from Americanism.......which is what I initially said.
  11. Don't confuse Americans with Americanism
  12. Sorry....yes.....should have said lose weight as a result of stress!
  13. Years ago some friends joined us for a weekend in Wales. Come Sunday night, "Primrose Landscapes" aka my mate, decided he didn't want to drive back to York and would have an extra day. Monday morn dawned (just) grey and very rainy. So feeling smug at having the perfect excuse, he rang his client to inform her that he wouldn't be able to make it due to the rain, at which point she informed him it was sunny in York and started to question him as to his whereabouts. Can't remember exactly what he said apart from a string of ridiculous excuses......and me laughing uncontrollably. Please note......Primrose Landscapes no longer trades.........funny that!
  14. Sort yourself out....weighing ketchup? MyFitnessPal?, you are probably losing weight through stress and worry. Definitely not good for you. Relax and smell the roses.....sorry trees! Ps.....would have added amusing smilies but don't know how on my iPad.
  15. Just re-read your post. The above is incorrect, the two were found guilty of libel, but...........it was certainly a moral victory for Anti-McDonalds activists Opening Wiki paragraph... McDonald's Corporation v Steel & Morris [1997] EWHC QB 366, known as "the McLibel case" was an English lawsuit for libel filed by McDonald's Corporation against environmental activists Helen Steel and David Morris (often referred to as "The McLibel Two") over a pamphlet critical of the company. Each of two hearings in English courts found some of the leaflet's contested claims to be libellous and others to be true. The partial nature of the victory, the David-and-Goliath nature of the case, and the drawn-out litigation embarrassed McDonald's.
  16. +1 Remember doing a gig yrs ago to raise funds for those two!
  17. Lard and gin.........must have been Beefeater!
  18. Forget guidelines and all that rubbish....if you are putting on weight and you feel it's a problem, do more to burn it off or cut down on eating, and vice versa. One thing I do believe though is that a lot of overweight/ fat people are actually malnourished. They eat poor quality food, and their body is telling them to eat more, as in 'I need more nutrients/minerals/vitamins......' Etc etc. and before you start, I'm too heavy as well, but I eat good quality food........................... BUT drink far too much beer! Ah.... Someone else who remembers Whitesnake when they were a proper band! "I've spent close on sixteen years Watching your pretty flower grow Little girl, little girl, now tell me Everything you know About the oceans and the skies, The mountains and the trees, And then I'm tell you about The birds and the honey bees 'Cos I'm a love man, yeah, yeah, yeah," (Love man by Whitesnake) Not sure that sounds too clever nowadays!
  19. A rather large sycamore, c 6m of base exposed, along an old trackway with many similar. Btw, where would you measure such a tree for ageing purposes? It appears to have been pollarded as it splits into 3 at c7ft Coppiced (?) alder on banks of River Swale Large Rowan (recorded on Ancient Tree Forum)
  20. Heavy sleet falling at 45 degree angle, snow higher up. Staying in bed!
  21. Based nr Reeth in N Yorks. We have some massive thorns, some of which Rackham believes are pollarded. As to why they are so big (along with some yew), one theory goes that lead mining did for all the other species as fuel, and that these were left, but they are also bordering an old wood pasture (see thread here..http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?p=1037146#post1037146)
  22. Don't know what happened in the middle??? Here's the pic
  23. As I'm starting to photo a few of our old trees in the area I thought I'd post a few of my favourites. Hawthorn small elm pollard, sadly dead.
  24. Down to shirt sleeves in woods this aft.
  25. Thanks for the suggestion, however I am working with the National Park, who work closely with the YDMT. I have a good working relationship with the YDMT with whom we did a fair size scheme with a couple of years ago and which resulted in the first Carbon Certified woodland in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. I live at the junction of Swaledale and Arkengarthdale 700 ft up below Fremington Edge, quite nice really!
