  1. Ezekial Chapter 4 verse 8 'and God spake from on high saying "let not thy woodburner be equipped with more than one vent, top vents are an abomination in the eyes of the Lord"
  2. 'All it takes for evil to prosper is for good men to do nothing'.
  3. How do they get back up?
  4. I've just started using it in my chainsaws and hedgecutters. It makes for a much more pleasent working environment. I probably won't use it in my strimmer or mower as the exhaust on them isn't as close to my face.
  5. It seems to me that for every source of power, there is a group of people violently opposed to it. Coal fired power stations? ooh no think of the carbon emissions; nuclear power? ooh no you'll give us all leukemia?; massive reserves of natural gas under Lancashire? can't do that, getting it out causes tiny earthquakes; tidal power? but what about the poor seabirds?; windfarms then? not in my back yard matey; how about generators powered by burning waste then? What and give kids brain damage? Until someone cracks nuclear fusion there is no perfect way of generating electricity, what's so wrong with biomass power stations anyway?
  6. The going rate for grass cutting and hedge timming probably varies depending on where in the country you are but I would suggest you need to be charging at least £15 an hour if you're doing it for a living (and paying tax, NI, public liability insurance, vehicle costs etc). You will doubtless come across some resistance from customers who expect to pay a mere 'gardener' a fiver an hour, but stick to your guns, do a good job, work like hell in the summer and be prepared to get cold, wet and muddy in the winter and you'll make a living.
  7. I had a Husqvarna (can't remember the model no) a few years ago and it proved really fragile. Every time it hit a piece of wire or a particularly tough branch and the blades stopped suddenly it smashed the gearbox. Eventually I got rid of it and replaced it with a cheap and cheerful Robin one and it's been brilliant
  8. I tipped some out of my hedge cutters today into a clear container and it's a sort of pale straw colour (looks a bit like piss!). Once I managed to get hold of some, I have run a few tankfuls through both an old 254xp and a not quite so old 346xp and both have run fine ( I did need to adjust the L screw on the 346). It's bloody expensive but I don't use much and it does smell nice!
  9. No, she means vernalisation vernalize or vernalise (ˈvɜːnəˌlaɪz) [Click for IPA pronunciation guide] —vb to subject ungerminated or germinating seeds to low temperatures, which is essential for many (plants) of temperate environments to ensure germination in some species and flowering in others vernalise or vernalise —vb vernali'zation or vernalise —n vernali'sation or vernalise —n Collins English Dictionary - Complete & Unabridged 10th Edition
  10. For twenty years I lived within quarter of a mile of the lake, I now live about three miles from it. Does that give me the right to comment?
  11. I agree by the way, best thing that ever happened to Windermere
  12. Yeah cos Bowness is an absolute ghost town now isn't it?
  13. I consider myself quite a tolerant person but it seems to me that many of the 'travelling communtiy' do seem to think they are above the law. Many pay no income tax or national insurance, vehicles (often run on red diesel) are seldom taxed, mot'ed or insured and planning laws, as in this case are ignored. If caught they simply give a false name and fail to turn up in court. There was a time many years ago when 'gypsies' as we called them then, really did have an alternative lifestyle, they travelled around the country in horse drawn caravans getting up to a bit of mischief but generally keeping themselves to themselves and not expecting anything from the rest of the populus. But today's 'travellers' are quite happy to use our health service and our schools without putting anything back into society. And how can you call yourself a 'traveller' if you've lived in the same place for 10 years? If you want to be part of our society then play by our rules, end of.
  14. Another vote for Cumulus down bags. I've got the bizarrely named 'Mysterious Traveller' and it's the only sleeping bag I've ever been really warm in. I bought a waterproof compression sack for it and it packs down really small which comes in handy for backpacking and motorbike trips.
  15. I just snapped the tip off my Silky Pocket Boy, does that count?
  16. So what's less harmful than Roundup? Apart from not using a herbicide at all?
  17. I haven't heard anything and it seems pretty unlikely to me. Glyphosate is one of the least harmful/damaging to the environment herbicides there is so why ban it?
  18. I was at Askham Bryan in the mid-eighties and thoroughly enjoyed it. Spent a lot of time (and most of my grant) in the Rose and Crown in Askham Richard. They used to do a great chicken curry and the local brew was 50p a pint!
  19. Cordifolia can grow upto 50 feet - takes a while though!
  20. The first one is definately a Eucryphia, either glutinosa or cordifolia. The second one has the look of a Parrotia persica but I could be wrong
  21. It's a Medlar Medlar / Royal Horticultural Society
