Da Da! The CI base actually belonged to the ugly jug shaped firebox, and I am now considering tipping the cauldron onto its back, then after lining the base with brick, lining the sides with a complete circle of brick, so that I get a brick arch over the top when it is tipped back on onto its side. P.S. Why does it remind me of a wartime searchlight battery!

Well, no, only kindle a small fire in the curve at the bottom, perhaps in an in-built brick hearth, then the parabolic shape will hopefully reflect the heat back. Just to be different. EDIT Anyone want to venture an opinion re the likelyhood of cracking the cast iron, which is remarkedly thin & light, the whole thing being an easy 2 man lift.

Either; Sitting in this orientation on a not yet built, salvaged red brick base, Note; Banana for scale! Or, how could I use this(last 2 images) instead, since I am a little reluctant to risk cracking the unblemished CI cauldron by lighting a fire in it. Btw. These were used to boil the potatoes to feed the pigs and chickens, on most small farm places here in NI, in days of yore.

Tell you what Mark, I would support UBI, with 1 provision, it entirely replaces ALL other benefits, i.e. it is the same as an earned wage packet, so no free housing, free cars or subs for extra brats, each adult simply has to manage with a fixed amount of money per week. But, somehow, I dont see that as likely.

SS banding/strapping around the bottom might work even better, the same stuff as they use to strap signs to posts, a simple hand tool is all is need to tighten it too. The daughters boyfriend was trying to get me to make and sell swedish candles is why we were discussing it, BUT, I never twigged using the splitter instead of a chainsaw, btw. I imagine the riven/split surface kindles/burns better than a saw track will. Kudos!

My take on the teaching of minority languages, for which there is apparently passionate burning support for in the local communities, is wtf does its teaching then need to be so generously government funded? Surely passionate volunteers and parents at home could pass it on, IF there is such community support? And bilingual road signage is just plain stupid, especially if safety related. And dont get me started at the mulitlingual written signs and other shite within the "underfunded" NHS. Marcus -
I have always intended to cut-to-length a single billet-bundle into a builders bag via the wee conveyor belt(for random unstacked filling) to establish the actual difference. Various reputable internet sites give conversion figures for the density of a given solid wood to carefully stacked round wood bulk density, to carefully stacked split wood bulk density, to random loose firewood bulk density. So many variables. And the "chancers" selling firewood in builders/jumbo/1tonne bags and claiming they are 1.0m3 does NOT help.

coppicer, A common misconception re the "tonne" builders bags, they are indeed intended to hold 1 tonne of sand or aggregate BUT said aggregate with a nominal bulk density of say, 1800kg-2000Kg/m3, so are in fact something like 850mm by 850mm by 900mm deep, giving a notional volume of 0.67m3(from lazy memory) BUT def not 1.0m3 in volume. My tight strapped bundles probably hold more timber and less air voids. Yes I got a wee plantation of Sitka, grant planted 40 odd years ago and started to blowdown, being planted in peat over impermeable clay. Re crane scales, cheap shite from China bought off ebay, I would not therefore take on to recommend any over any other supplier. Cheers Marcus

Oddly enough, or not, but over my 10 odd years of use and abuse of the 5t Krpan, which is still on its origonal rolled steel rope, I can still pull the 10mm? wire rope out without much difficulty, despite more than once winching until I stalled the 84HP DB1490 tractor,(OK only ticking over on the 1000 shaft setting) and then having to release with a hellauva "sproing", and not always carefully respooling afterwards(and I got a big kink on the drum somewhere just recent) So was the rolled steel wire rope on the Krpan better quality? mth

crane scales finally delivered, see images; The fresh felled and cut to length this morning bundle is Lodgepole pine, weighing 322Kg but at a measured 0.615m3 in volume with a moisture meter reading of 35%(which struck me as low?) The dry bundle at 169Kg is mostly Sitka at a measured 0.55m3 and 14%, After measuring the diameter and calculating the volume, the wet Lodgepole gives me 524.87Kg/m3 @ 35% and the dry Sitka calcs out at 306.66Kg/m3 @ 14% I suppose I need to ferret out enough Sitka to process and weigh wet.

Krpan, out of Slovania, I got a 17 t with a winch(which is unfortunately unbraked) driven off the PTO, takes about 1100mm, the paint is falling off despite being shed stored, but mechanically 100%. A wee hydraulic winch would have been much nicer to use.

Despite the relative shit-hole of a village it is located in, our local Primary school is absolutely excellent, and also spotlessly clean. -
If they are still imported or distributed, a Ferris should be up there too, especially the Perkypillar(i.e. a yellow Perkins) engined ones.

I used to carry a scapel, taped to the smooth SS side of my jack-of-all-trades 1957 Army Issue penknife, which was as about sharp as a butter knife, and brought out when so needed, before being carefully taped back into position. Never failed me.

So you use a linkage mounted PTO driven splitter but also need to move timber to and away from the splitter using 3pt linkage mounted pallet toes on the same tractor, in this case for your MF 35/35x would an "A" frame Quick hitch on the linkage not work? That fireplace was clearly wider and higher in its origonal form, so there must be a lintol higher up, but regardless the brickwork will naturally arch or self-corbel, i,e, only the middle entirely unsupported bricks can fall away, and even then, they probably wont, unless already loose or there is a large point load almost directly above. good luck, mth
