First two pics the same fruiting body. 30cm across and wobbled like a jelly on oak Lets see what the gurus say. Second two also on oak. saw these about a month ago they were bright red then only got chance to photograph them to day
  12. one other thing you could try is bridge grafting. an old trick. Purchase a couple of apple root stocks M26 OR M106 Plant them either side and graft them into the stem above the damaged area. this will aid support, supply of nutrients and if the infected area fails full support of the tree.

  15. The infection in malus that is also infected by Nectria galligena Dose look like that, but it is quite common to take the appearance of of the picture at the start of this thread. It is also common to be infected by Schizophyllum commune or one of the coriolus family. these would induce the white rot it can be misleading when relating malus to other broadleaved species,

    how old?

Fungus the reason I chose Prunus and Malus is example of short life span. making it easier to establish age. How ever with the fashions of the last 2 centuries for the control of fungal attack of Prunus and Malus. Ageing may be difficult through fungal colonisation. for example the control of Erysiphe, Sphaerotheca,Nectria galligena, with tar oil, or nicotine in the old days or even copper in latter days. these would also kill of any other fungal colonisation. the control of Erisoma lanigerum was and still is important as the colonisation will weaken the trees defence and make it more susceptible to Nectria galligena in Prunus.
