The graft is Howgate. you can recognise this by the pronounced ridges either side and just below the bud with 1mm white dots on a reddish bark. although easier to id on the hole branch with upright habit. one of the few apples the fruit well on strong upright 2 year shoots. Root stock m106 Vigorous not suitable for cropping trees on good soil.

Yes all the time works well. At the bottom of the wedge there is a hole. this is so you can use a punch to push the old wood out. if not drill a hole into the top of the wood and screw in a large screw eye to pull the wood out. -
