  1. Thats a good day rate, here in Shropshire I charge £175 a day, thats just myself, PPE, Various Climbing Kit etc. I don't have a Chipper, if i did the day rate would more likely be £200- 225..
  2. The Tree Doc is a nickname that some of my college mates used to call me as i was one of those know it all types, and knew nothing. Seriously though, your work is very unique, a deffinate sell at the Arb shows and the APF etc.
  3. I like that I'll have one of those and engrave The Tree Doc on it, folk will pay good money for Art like that..
  4. I may be wrong, but doesnt the Forestry Comission require you to Burn trees infected with Phytophera, to prevent cross contamination etc..
  5. I had a similar interview about 10,11 years ago, a Forester who had advertised for a Labourer. I turned up at the Woodlands he was working at and found my future employer piling up Brash and organising Cordwood, i was advised to hold on whilst he finished said task, then his Mobile rang and he informed me he had to take the call, so assesing the situation i piled the Brash into neat piles, stacked and sorted the Cordwood acording to size, and was about to stack a few logs, but he had finished his call. He took a look at the Brash pile and Cordwood, looked at me, scratched his head, then in typical Alan Sugar style uttered those immortal words "Your Hired". I was with him for about 7 yrs, he even took the time off at weekends to have an Arborist freind of his teach me Tree Climbing etc. I now work as a Gardener and Freelance Climber, well almost i would class myself as Freelance if it wasn't for the fact i have yet to gain my Sectional Dismantling Ticket, so its more of a case of Groundy than climber.. By the way i charge £125 per day, have a good Equipment Hall and full PPE and own Vehicle..
  6. Hi. Cant realy tell from the picture what it is, from what i can see though it looks like a Hornbeam or Aspen, and without properly looking at it, would be difficult to do a Quote, as a Rough Guide i would charge around the £150-200 mark. Where abouts in the UK are you based?.
  7. Welcombe to the Forum, probably the best Tree related Forum on the net, and well done to a Brave Move. Never been to Croatia, my Travel haunts are Canada and the Pacific NorthWest (Oregon, Seatlle etc) it looks a Great place to live though..
  8. Same here, i had a call this Morning from the Parks/Woodland Officer from our area Wildlife Trust (Which im a Volunteer Warden For) If needs be i will probably go out over the next few days. Lots of people walk our local Woodlands/Parks on Christmas/Boxing day.
  9. Had my SJ for about a year now, mines the SJ 2 with the Dyneema, its been through countless clutches and about 4 new Ropes. Now i've mastered it, its great fun, it's teamed up with a ART Primus. Now that is a serious good rope anchour.
  10. Thiis is a prety unusuall second job, im a Landscape Architech in training and Carer to my Autistic Nephew (Orphaned)
  11. Ditto that, Sellers who regularly sell on Ebay, especially Power Sellers have a good reputation to keep and maintain, it only takes 1 bad feedback rating and that reputation has gone. I often buy on Ebay, mostly from Reputable Dealers such as Fletcher Stewart, Gustharts etc, who often sell off surplass stock. You can get Cracking Brand New goods on Ebay..
  12. I use the new 2.1 Dyneema, and absolutely love it. I use the Spiderjack for small-medium tree's and the Hitch Climber system for Large tree's and Conifers/Pines as its more versitile, been using the SJ for about 4 mnths and has certainly cut down production time..
  13. Me too, im from Romany Gypsie stock on my Dads side. My Great Grandmother was a Gypsie Rose Lie, from Cork
  14. Im totally with you on this one, i started life in Garden Maintenance, worked hard bought own gear and now im working towards doing my Utility Arb tickets, as before paid for the previous CS38,39 tickets through hard graft. Taken me years to do but at least i can say i totally own my own gear, bar the Chipper (I borrow that when i can from a local Conservation Trust i sometimes do work for)
  15. Hitchclimber System all the way, Though the appeal of the ZigZag or the Spider/Lockjack on a job where you have several Tree's to do is something to thinck about, as speed would be of the escence..
  16. Im a member of the Royal Forest Society, The International Maple Society, Westonbirt Arboretum, Bodenham Arboretum and Bedgebury Pinetum, i go to a few of there site visit meetings, the A.G.M and Conferances, i pay a small joining fee and a small amount on petrol etc. You wouldnt belive the amount of contacts and subsequent work i've had on the back of this, and because the Westonbirt and Bedgebury Parks are owned/managed by the Forestry Commission i may at some point get some work from them. In my opinion that is the way forward.
  17. You think thats tough, try the Salomon X Adventure Series, that will make even the Paras weep. Done the X adventure 3yrs ago and still aching now, (Or should that be aching to do it again:sneaky2:)
  18. I've had the pleasure of meeting Ted Green at a Veteran Tree Master Class symposium a couple of years back, he's a bit opinionated, but speaks from the heart, he's very knowledgable and a great spokesperson for Ancient Tree Forum arm of the Woodland Trust. Oh btw Hamadryad have i been living in Bedrock or something as ive only just cottoned on to your notorious book club you are currently running, is there a list or something going round, as i would love to be a part of it, also keep up your threads, i learn loads from them. Thanks for the Ted Green link:thumbup:
  19. I also forgot to mention that one of my Brother-in -law's used to run a Plant Hire firm who is also good mates with a major Breakers Yard/Metal Dealer in Telford, so they now have all the info they need, just in case it is weighed in around Shropshire and surrounding areas..
  20. I live not far from you, Coalbrookdale,Shropshire and as its distinctive, will keep my eyes peeled for it. I have a mate that works in Devonport.Plymouth and his dad works the Docks in Dover, i have txted them to keep an eye out for it. Hopefully from the support of the great Arbtalk community it wil turn up soon
  21. I recently done this for a Barrister, the thing was though he paid half of what i quoted for up front and said if i do a good job without breaking anything would pay the rest upon completion, did the job well, no breakages, so when it came to final payment he conveniently forgot what was originally said, so reminded him that full payment once job was complete or pay late and receive late payment interest. He said he had other work for me and will pay in full once the other job was complete. 3 weeks later, he not only paid for the previous job with interest added on, paid for other job in full when that was complete, with another £100 on top for being patient etc, how chuffed was i:001_smile:
  22. Im a Contract/Freelance climber for 2 local Conservation Trusts and we do just that on the reserves i work on,ie dead standing wood is left, young good wood is either used as fuel etc for our Eco freindly office/workshop/volunteer centre,or sold to local power station, good clean brash is chipped and sold as bio fuel. Its only the naturaly dead stuff thats left as Habitat. The trust i work for has been doing that for a couple of years and theres always plenty of Tree's etc for everyone
