  1. I used to "offer" that till some wag phoned up at 3am saying his tree had just had a heart attack and could i come and resuscitate it! Not worth it imo.
  2. A bit, tbh I only do it on trees that seem to be likely to go like leaning willows, pops etc and Tree of heaven which really are prone to splitting open (ime)
  3. If you use your front ring instead of you side ones while chogging down you will not become part of "the squeeze circle" (tip from David Goss)
  4. Like B101 says its all relative, but the minimum engine I would use for a grinder would be around the 25hp mark (both Rayco and carlton use or used the Kohler command unit) will you get that power to the cutting wheel from a compact tractor? I'd guess not so I am coming down on the gimmick side. I dunno, would need to be convinced before shelling out.
  5. Not exactly fighting them off here!
  6. I remember the original thread, and I thought it was a good idea, for me the thumbs up between groundy and climber meaning ok to cut/I have the line ready is a natural really, and one I use is both hands on my head to indicate no cutting for the moment, you can safely go under the tree.
  7. Pictures would help, are the areas of browning towards a particular area of prevailing wind? can you see any large silken nests in the canopy?
  8. There is a lot of talk about "balance" I don't think it exists in the way people think, by which I mean some kind of "right" amount of everything. populations have always fluctuated, starlings, voles, owls et al have huge surges and near disappearances, This is not really relevant to the buzzard debate as such I just find the whole balance of nature stuff a bit simplistic and Disneyfied
  9. Presumably they feel they can do it faster; obviously no one will be able to give you a definitive answer as you are the man who looked at the job, but if you had two more groundsmen could you have done it in two days or even one? Most trees (unless they are mega!) can be reduced in no more than 3/4 hours, so If the climber had nothing to do but climb, maybe it could be done.
  10. Very very funny (in a good way!)
  11. I have been the victim of chipper theft, luckily I got it back! The police were uninterested, when i told them that I had (off my own back) found out who had it and was going to meet him to pay a grand to get it back, If they could supply a copper with a warrant card it would be a guaranteed nick they said they were busy, could i delay it for a few days! Took some mates, no money changed hands.
  12. Thanks for the update, plenty to think about for everyone.
  13. Agreed, when I left college (when God was a boy) I thought everyone was doing it wrong. let it slide, i bet they'll be fine.
  14. Interesting post,I have seen buzzards and kites hunting together whilst farmers cut hay, sometimes a good dozen of each, i wondered what the dynamics were between these two birds.
  15. I used to buy good quality top soil from turf suppliers; That should be good enough, Light loamy and fertile.
  16. In chainsaw trousers you will get uncomfortably hot, I put some vaseline in the "sensitive" areas to prevent sweat chafing. and no this is not a tip from Brokeback Mountain!
  17. The Buzzard (ours) is a bit more of a predator. I have seen one take a pigeon out of a tree and a weasel off the ground but will take smaller prey like lizards crickets etc.
  18. In fairness ELG a turkey buzzard is actually a vulture, the buzzard we are talking about is very different. probably similar rules apply but I thought today I would be a pedant!
  19. Here in SW france we are stacked with buzzards, kites, hen harriers and to a lesser extent hobbies and short toed eagles, and yet other birds seem to be abundant. the only thing in short supply seems to be rabbits. I am not making a scientific statement just saying what I see.
  20. Cold weather, down here loads gone plus many bay trees.
  21. 5ft or so above the first opening of the crown, then it's an easy repollard in a few years. Just my opinion mind.
  22. I wish people would stop moaning about their lot all the time, "I'm being undercut" or "cowboys stealing my work" jeez times are tough so man up. go and do some utility work or stack some shelves or pick rubbish from a landfill in Rio.
  23. Hope you are right, I got this feeling though that things have changed for good, and maybe the worst is to come. I am not an end of the world person normally.
