  1. I see what you mean when you said they jumped quite a distance! Nice one lads.
  2. Yes it was a rather windy day! Nice work James. If I go shopping without a list from the missus, I will inevitably forget something or buy the wrong thing.
  3. The Henchman's are great, but can't afford right now. I use a 6ft and a 10ft tripod, they're pretty handy.
  4. Nice. When I get home early, the wife sends me shopping.
  5. Cool, sounds like fun.
  6. Mmm...sounds mysterious.
  7. Cheers guys. Looking forwards to tomorrow, you are the king of coronets. I'm sure there's a pun in there somewhere.
  8. Yeah, it was quite spindly up top, but I love climbing beech. Fortunately had my faithful tripod ladder and long reach loppers for the sides.
  9. Cheers James, I know, I only took the one pic, should have done one from the other side. It made me feel better after I massacred a cherry last week! I'm gradually getting more confident.
  10. As I'm new to the mysterious arts of tree cutting, please be gentle. Here's my first reduction pic. Young beech, 12-15yrs old, about 30ft tall. Customer spec was to reduce by about 30% to let more light into their greenhouse, I convinced them that a less harsher haircut was better for the tree, and would let in enough light. So did a 20% reduction. I know it's only a wee little job, but I was pleased. No before pic and it's a bit hard to see.
  11. Populus balsamifera?
  12. Hi Yogi, If you're completely new to arb/tree climbing then I would stick with the 2 year course and whilst you're doing it try to get some experience with local tree companies at weekends or holidays. I did a short 10 week course and all it teaches you to do is pass an assessment, I've learnt more doing a few days with an experienced arborist than on that entire 10 weeks. Best of luck.
  13. That pint glass looks too narrow at the base to support the weight, I suggest you do a 100% reduction on the beer inside! Proper job Stevie
  14. Hi Stephen, cracking looking tree there matey. T/R ratio is how much sound wood there is relative to the radius of the stem. Should be 30% or over, or else, according to Mattheck, there is a greater risk of the tree failing. Even if it is less than 30%, doesn't mean the trees had it though, other factors play a part.
  15. I think the wedge is forcing the top cut shut, so it acts like a vice and grips the bar.
  16. It was a nice day indeed! I think the blind girls didn't stand a chance with you that day, the shiny pulleys had all you attention!
  17. Funnily enough I used to be a support worker too, worked on a forensic secure unit. Got fed up with that, always had been a keen outdoors person since I was a nipper, started my own gardening business, loved the tree care aspect, got my tickets and at the ripe old age of 30 am trying to claw my way into the world of arboriculture. Wish I'd started 10 years ago, but I'll get there one day!
  18. Fell and plant something nicer! Sounds like you've got the right answer though, reduce a bit. Hope all goes well.
  19. I think he was going a kind of dog's tooth. Can't really tell, looks like the tree has a slight lean.
  20. Hey Glyn, welcome to Arbtalk mate.
  21. Thanks all.
  22. Heh heh. We liked the name Jack, but thought it wouldn't be appropriate.
  23. Ta Dave. Although it's raining here!
  24. Just wanted to give all those who make Arbtalk happen a big pat on the back with what they've achieved. Reading through the posts today, I see that people from all walks of life are being referred to the site to get help from professionals and experts in the field of Arb. One person is asking about their tree that has murderously had almost half its root plate removed by their neighbour. A lady from the BBC is asking for the experiences of Arbtalk's members with leylandii. A chap opening a tool shop is trying to find out what professionals are buying to run their businesses. The list could go on. Just think it's a tribute to the knowledge and professionalism of those that use Arbtalk. Don't want to come across all soppy, maybe I'm being a bit emotional as the missus has just given birth to my son, little Harry Frost! Hope everyone's having a good day!
  25. Sorry, poor effort, but it was a lovely big burn up earlier that day!
