Not alot to report other than the first site cut and baled this week. Got 3 more sites to be done next week "weather depending". One site we are leaving for a few more weeks as the bottom field is still saturated in one corner so we are tempted to leave that corner and chuck another pond in there to aid drainage and create another habitat for the meadow with an already established self maintaining/dredging pond. -
We have Roundup Biactive and the heavier agri Glyphogan 480. We use the Biactive for the path edges and spraying car parks. And use the 480 for Knotweed. We use it at a stronger mix than is recommended for the JK unless it is next to a watercourse which is where we use the biactive but inject it neat into the stems.

Shall see ya'll tomorrow with Adam M. I recon a group photo is in order tomorrow. Thats if the thunderstorms don't spoil it. -
The stuff Stihl usually supply in the combi heads is 2.3mm (Orange). I would try something like the 2.8 mm (Red). The 3mm cord (Yellow) would be hard going on the shaft and gear head. Do you run it flat out along the wall and round trees/posts etc?

We have a problem with our Verges FS460 Strimmer gear head. Despite the bolt being done as tight as possible without stripping the threads from the aluminium casing it spins when the throttle is either blipped or on full throttle. Has anyone else come across this fault before? Is there anything we can do without replacing the entire gear head?

The final day of college. Was a dull morning stuck in a computer room but the teachers asked about any special things we have achieved out of work and done in our own time so i brought up this thread. Everyone loved it. All the comments, pictures and "Arb slang" dotted about in the various threads i have started. They took alot of interest in this thread in particular and had alot of questions asked about various posts. Spent the afternoon in a bird hide then walking around a site known as Holton Lee (the Poole crew will know where that is). We did a Redshank survey which was cool. My ID skills came into their own this afternoon. We had a spare hour to kill as the tide came in so gave everyone a talk on the body language of the Oak trees on the site and explained why they are being left to their own devices. -
Heard 6 yesterday and the piece de resistancé yesterday was a colleague and i saw 3 of them flying about. 2 males and a female.

Another day another batch of Orchids which are new to the site. We haven't sewn them there. But we will be encouraging them to spread by hay cropping the site in Late August/early September. Oh and some pics of a pair of Yellow Tailed moths mating. -

Nice afternoon for some picture taking. The light was just right for it. Even better I found a Southern Marsh Orchid on an area of Dry Calcareous Semi-improved Grassland. Sixth orchid species found on the site in 2 years. -

After complaint after complaint about verges being uncut or stupid tufts left in ridiculous places. I managed to snap this Common Blue on a Rough Hawksbit on the side of a main road whilst i was surveying urban verges in my hometown. -
Gonna be a very bad couple of weeks on the emotion side of things. Its a bank holiday i will always dread coming around. We are celebrating his life in the only way we know how. A massive gathering at Nando's in his memory. So far we have 150 people going all of them in "Joner/Jones 4" Man U Shirts. We have booked the restaurant and bar out for the night.

Rumbling away merrily in Blanny, clouds are getting darker and the gusty winds have died to a gnat fart. A storms a coming, hopefully it will clear the air.

Not alot to report other than lots of verge cutting going on. Trees looking dodgy and hazard rearing their ugly heads after the storms. Nice to see the summer flowers appearing. Just bought Collins Complete guide to British Mushrooms and Toadstools to keep my fungi ID upto scratch. -
I always take our FS 400 for verge cutting with the Autocut 2 head. My colleague uses the FS460 and it doesnt have the same grunt as the 400. With the 460 its flat out or nothing and thats with a new fuel and air filter. Looking at putting the Autocut 4 heads on the FS 480's we have for verge cutting. Have always run the yellow 3mm cord too.

Very few ash out on some of our sites. I would say for every 20 oaks out in leaf i see 1 ash out.
-
That is possibly the next option bracing it and a couple of others with Cobra bracing and reducing it by about 5 metres off the top but felling some neighbouring Ash to halo it so it can establish an inner crown. The wind was ideal for the video today. Gusts of varying strength and length helped.
-
I have got a video of the cracks opening and closing today in the gusts. The TO would like to evaluate the tree in 6 months but would rather we deadwooded and removed rubbing branches from the remaining avenue first. I will let the video do the talking on what would take a higher priority.

Mullered a few on some blackthorn suckers on a right of way today

Cheers bud. Pops is gonna get a bottle n give it a try. No harm in trying is there. It should save us 200 quid in labour if it seals the leak.
-
Our bus has a wee leak coming from the P gasket. Mine and dads idea is to put Radweld+ in the coolant system hoping that it will seal the leak up once and for all. Its only 8 quid from halfords so its worth a shot. From what i've heard it will seal up any leak in the cooling system.
