  1. Not sure about this public thing. Beaches are public places. During the Worthing Bird-man contest last year, we saw a bloke frog-marched to a bunch of coppers (by a group of angry parents) cos he was taking photos of kids on the beach. I used to be a swimming teacher and there were all sorts of guidelines (no idea of where the guidelines stopped and laws started) but in the end we just didnt allow any photos in the swimming/changing areas. Pathetic, I know, but that's the litigative cotton wool society we now have.

    Ebay scam.

Youre right there Matmoss. I find the genuine sellers are only too happy to field awkward questions - they have nothing to hide. As soon as someone starts getting vague or stroppy it usually means 'Avoid'!

    Jokes???

    Brilliant1:lol::lol:
  4. Awful news, condolences to all his friends and family. Thanks for posting, if we are reminded of such possibilities then hopefully a similar event will be less likely in the future. No words to adequately describe how those close to him must be feeling.

    Jokes???

How do you know Adolf Hitler was a rubbish golfer? He spent the last four weeks of his life in the same bunker..... Apologies for the bad taste, no intention to upset golfers (or fascists).
  6. Not yet - got a day off this week, hope to get it sorted then, I'll post the result when I have it.
  7. IIRC correctly the 880 (MS880 I assume) produces around 8.5 HP therefore the clutch would struggle with your proposed upgrade. Last time I 'replaced' an engine in a chipper for something different I found a seemingly endless string of bodges t make it work. Having said that, If you really feel the need then go for it.
  8. What on earth were you looking for on the internet when you found that picture? I suspect they have escaped from VIZ magazine.
  9. I saw them on the beach at Worthing last year- The lifeguard asked them to move so the tide could come in!
  10. Why not set up a video of your work on youtube and give it a really obscene label, you'll get loads of hits - and maybe a few of those customers mentioned on a recent thread.
  11. The conundrum goes something like this... The problem is that the system would have to be changed by a government that was elected by the 'old' system and they would be unlikely to want to change it to a system that favours the others - and may well result in them not getting in again.
  12. Herring gulls nesting on the roof. Very handy after a barbecue, they eat anything! - except economy burgers.
  13. An impact gun will release it without too much faffing. Just make sure it's set in the right direction.
  14. Thanks Alec - thats a pretty detailed answer there. I'm off to the workbench ! It does pull over about one stroke then seems solid, but after the starter has recoiled you can pull over one more. It you go for it it feels like broken knuckles will ensue. Has anyone got Marius Pudzanowski's phone number?
  15. Will the barrel have a thread for one?
  16. No doubt about the cost when new. The OP was asking whether new saws are lower quality than the old ones.
  17. No doubt a lot of people in the companies want to do the best but the ultimate decisions are made higher up. There IS a reason why a lot of newer stuff is poor quality. Guess we just have different views.
  18. Profit is what's driving it. I've just been working on my Stihl 076 and I have to say the build quality is bloody awesome. Everything is metal and held together with bolts. Yes it's heavy but it has lasted many many years. These big companies exist to make a profit and they will cut manufacturing costs to do it. In the long run their reputation can suffer, but chief execs often take a shorter term view - big profits today, then I move to another company and further enhance my reputation. Yes, another cynical comment from an old git who has worked (and been exploited) in some very big companies. Don't kid yourselves the guys at the top give one iota if your saw melts shorthly after the warranty expires. They don't anymore.
  19. Any suggestions from the tecchie gurus? My Stihl 076 has always run fine. It was fairly easy to start and cut very quickly. A few months ago I tried to start it and it was almost impossible to turn it over. In the end we gave up and just used the Husky 3120 between us. I finally got it out today to have a look and can't see a problem. I took out the plug and shook the saw in case it was a fuel hydraulic thing. With the plug out the pot moves freely. I can pull one revolution at a time but there almost seems to be too much compression. Heeeeelp. The only other thing I can think of is whether chain or oil has somehow leaked into the casing???
  20. No doubt the cleaning up after fly tippers comes from a different budget which could be funded from elsewhere so never mind the cost/stupidity/inconvenience etc. it's good news for the department dealing with Household waste. This is all gusswork so is probably wrong, but why not have a rant anyway.
  21. A while ago I was asked to quote for a big job. In the end I gave a price to do a small section of it for a fixed price (which they were happy with) on the understanding that I would then be able to give a fixed price for the rest of it by extrapolating the total effort - and they would be able to see if they were happy with the way we worked. The second figure was to be treated as a totally new quote with no commitment on the customer's part. As it happened they were happy so we went back and did the full job. Reduced risks for all concerned, treating the first bit like a 'sales pitch'. Lovely Job!
  22. How severe is the root-void issue in reality? Wouldnt the roots decompose slowly but gradually morph into a compost rather than leave an empty space? I can see that the resulting 'mush' would be less supportive but have often wondered what really happens. We all know that surveyors tend to err on the side of caution and that insurance companies are always looking for a get-out. No doubt some of the academics on here can enlighten us more than I ever could.
  23. Maybe the written quotation should stipulate the frequency with which refreshments are served and list the preferred food options. If the customer agrees to the work and doesn't deliver... you can sue them for breach of contract.
  24. Are they a long-time customer? Who left it there? and why? Was it left there to save money? Don't feel compelled to do them a 'favour' and end up out of pocket. Unless it was YOU who left it there - in which case, shame on you.
