  1. Couple of books I go back to every now and then, stirs memories and makes me laugh. Well worth a look if you're at a loose end.
  2. Lucky person, always what I've aimed for, nearly achieved once but now have constant traffic noise. And my tolerance levels have decreased to very low levels once I sit in a vehicle and have to travel anywhere.
  3. For the price of VW's or just everything in general? 🙂
  4. Bought a MS660 last week, and I'm spending many a happy hour cleaning, fettling and tinkering. Replaced some parts and done some maintenance. Going to play with it on some larger firewood lumps tomorrow. Had a word with Spud and it'll be having some magic dust sprinkled over it at some time in the future, once I've finished playing.
  5. Sounds familiar to my past life
  6. We regularly used to travel from Norfolk coast to Mid Scotland, Wales, English/Scottsh borders (staying in digs) year round, When we got even a half chance of getting home each night we took it, so often drove from south of Doncater or Oxford area. Didn't think anything of it back then but think I'd keel over trying it now. Firm we were working for were ok with paying for the fuel as long as it was cheaper than digs for a five man gang per week. Only bothered in summer though.
  7. No thank you, I melt easily
  8. Few years ago we were cutting on the railways (Derbyshire I think), break time and we were near a bridge, we went down by the water and all the time we were there young swallows or swifts were skimming the sufrface of the water, drinking, really low flight and lower part of the beak just touching the water. Fantastic to watch
  9. Was looking for one of those years ago, would of been used even more on the 'can you just while you're here' crew (the ones that ask just after eveything had been loaded).
  10. Went around there this morning didn't see any signs or advertising but if they are online only, it's probably best not to let everyone know where a shed full of tools is. Talked to a couple of local guys and they don't know anything about them. Maybe just starting up after working for or being called something else.
  11. I used to do some work for the local wildlife trust (Norfolk) and the Swallowtail is around a lot on some of their sites (Upton, Ranworth and Hickling mainly). Best day I had was hearing and seeing a Bittern, watching a Marsh Harrier quarter a reed bed hunting and getting a great view of a Swallowtail warming itself in the early morning sun

Access can be either through driveway gate (need to reverse in and might be tight fit depending on vehicle) or via a hard field headland (gateway next to house allows access to rear of garden, room to tip and turn, can be wet/muddy in winter)
  13. I've worked with less productive people who were working age and getting paid well to do so. Good on Rupert
  14. Their address is only 5-6 miles from me, I've not heard of them before (suspect they may still be sorting things out). I'll take a ride and see if I can find out a bit more.
  15. I know that feeling, been there, still doing it even though I don't cut anywhere like as much as I used to
  16. Can you remember when you had your first saw, telling yourself that you were sorted now. Then you looked in the catalogues or visited the local dealer....
  17. Get two work vehicles the you can double it, each truck needs a set 😎
  18. The one saw I always took when starting was a 60cc and 18". It was about as heavy as I wanted to use all day long and could do all I needed. Sometimes, if there was something too big, I'd go get a larger saw or leave it and do all the bigger saw jobs in one hit, when, everything else was sorted. I have taken one power head and a couple of bars/chains, then switch them if required.
  19. There speaks a man who knows how to justify another bought saw to the missus through experience
  20. Followed by early retirement
  21. Little lottery win for both of you 😃
  22. Who will miss who the most? Glad you had a great time
  23. When I first started I used to sleep in the truck cab. After a while I worked for a company that paid overnight money and arranged b&b's for us, life of luxury. The b&b's were nothing special, but beat the hell out of kipping down across the bench seat of a hilux
  24. If I could do it over I'd do the cutting through the week and the firewood in any free times, I could be as busy as I wanted or needed to be. At the time I already had a small yard in a local woodland that hgvs could access, so that helped. I did do the tree climbing side of it for a while, I don't think I was suited to it, If I was knackered I just wanted to ground level prune it, I was way to impatient to do it to the standard of many on here. Didn't mind using spikes, they proved useful at times
