well, here is how i see it... Trees (or plants in general) breathe in CO2, use the C bit (carbon) for making tree, and breathe out the O2 bit (2 bits of oxygen). If bits fall off the tree, like leaves, twigs etc... they rot down, and this process (that requires oxygen) gives off CO2 again. And this will be tha same amount of CO2 that was absorbed to make the twig, leave or whatever in the first place. Once the tree has grown, died and all rotted down (or got its self burnt) ALL the carbon will have got combined with oxygen and re emmitted. I suppose if you use the wood for making funiture (I guess something like church pews would be best) the carbon would stay tied up for a few hundred years more, but this is hardly the big picture as far as the "planet" is concerned. Plant trees cos you like planting trees not to make people who drive SUV's feel better

Firstly, I do think handing out trees is great, and free trees are all the better. They are fun to plant with the kids, make the area look better, give shade for picnics during bar-b-q summers, and even provide work for future arbs.... but why do people always drag CO2 into it Once the tree dies, all the carbon gets released back into the atmosphere. surely all tree planting "carbon warriors" do is store up problems (if CO2 is a problem) for our kids. If you have something againts CO2, stop burning fossil fuels, its the ONLY way way to affect human related atmospheric CO2. (but where is the fun in that) (BTW, this is in no way knocking Tom2020 , just the whole stupid carbon thing)

20 years industry experiance now stands for nowt (it turns out). What i really need (I am told) is a qualification to assist me in spoting 'non-conformant' working. (pesky young upstarts with their fancy suits and their blueberry cellular radios) IOSH (managing safety) vs NEBOSH (national general certificate) - which is better do you all think????

First I would contact your local NPTC assessment centre. Ask them to organise you a CS31.4 and a CS32 to be taken in a month or two. If they do, you are home and dry. If they say something like 'computer says no' you are going to have to start wiggling if you wish to avoid doing CS30 / 31 assessments. Once the 31.4 / 32 assessment is booked, I would then only bother with the CS32 training. Takedown is covered by Cs32, the only differece is you are getting the tree down with a winch rather than a breaking bar.

There is a chance depending on who you talk to, and who you can get to arrange it. But at very least you will need to take CS31.4 first (takedown of hungup trees) as this was not covered in the earlier units.

Once worked for a chap called Colin Inder at a company called Arboricare (based between Taunton and Wellington). Try looking him up on the internet, He seemed ok :-) ('corse, that ain't very near Yeovil)

Apparently some posts on Arbtalk are pointless. Even worse, It's been claimed that some whole threads are not worthy of the electrons that carry them. For instance... Therefore, maybe we should have an Elite forum so those who are either very serious, time poor or just not wanting to sift through the chaff can simply cream off the arbtalk gold. Entry stricly by appointment, me thinks. Ejection after a moments indiscretion. Don't think I'll be joining:blushing:

Since these silly 3 action things have come in I have followed a simple rule.... Only buy ones with the secret code PETZL embossed on the side. The spring that turns the collar (not the spring that closes the gate) just seems far more up to the job than the spring on other karabiners.

or...................... how about getting a boring well paid job for a while (southeast would prob be the best location..... some soleless city should do it.....maybe sorting out other peoples imaginary problems.........) THEN, once you have made a nice wedge (give it 15 years or so) you can 'retire' to a nice little place in the country, and become a hobby arb.

Maybe you you should try http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/employment/17383-tesco-night-shifts-11p-h-climbing-7-9p-h.html for clues (just don't try recruting down Tescos) A tree surgeon is like one of them fancy arborist gods..... but whereas arborists are highly skilled (like airline pilots or nurosurgeons), a tree surgeon is only semi skilled (like a grass-cutter). Ha Ha, I laffed till I cried.

Or do!!! Often wondered if there is a place in the market for Arb or Forestry holidays. It would be great to loop over a couple of rainforest monsters before they are all gone. But then I come to my senses.... ....None of us lot are ever going to willingly pay to cut trees!

Was there not a practice in New Zealand called "power felling" where a whole forest hillside would be prepared with sink cut and a partial back cut? The trees remained standing due to dense creapers growing between them. The 'holding' trees were at the top of the hillside where then cut, and the whole section fell over at the same time. Apparently, the creapers stopped the trees from being felled individually. Fun to set up..... Great to watch..... Turns out, not so good if you are sat at the bottom having a picnic! 'Course, it may just be a myth. :-)

Enjoying a KFC - (Bargin Bucket - can't be doing with all that new fangled 'chicken zinger' rubbish) - in the nice park in the middle of Haywards Heath (sussex) the other evening. At first, I thought this cherry tree had interesting red leaf / green leaf ability. On closer inspection, things are not looking so well............... (mind you - from a distance you can see the crown is thinning rather) Can't say I have noticed anything like it before.... Any ideas to the cause? Is it common? Is it becoming more widespread? Should I have gone for popcorn chicken?
