  1. Had 200t, 338 and top handled Makita. Faults of 200t / 338 i agree with. I had the Makita around '99 / 2000. The points that I found really annoying with it were... The fuel filler hole was too small to allow an anti-spill spout, resulting in having to remove the spout and either using a funnel (yeh, right!), or just spilling fuel all over the saw / lawn. The side casing required a 10mm combi spanner (which if they exist, didn't come with the saw) which ment you had to carry an actual spanner about with you. The throttle trigger was too long. It only needs to extend under your index finger, but the makita seemed to interfere with 3 fingers, so at times, you would be gripping the top handle with just your little finger -- not safe--. The day I got rid of the makita, and bought the 020t was a happy one. I do quite like the ground saws though, as said though, they are just a little too blue
  2. What a great world it is eh? Newt fence, Smoooth snake relocation, Bat suryeys Hedgehog crossings, Toad underpasses. I hope all this wildlife appreciates our efforts to not steamroller it in the name of 'progress'. Got some Slowworms living along the hedge on the right hand side of the garden. Maybe some newt fence will stop them from getting tangled in the Hayterette.
  3. I s'pose it could be to do with controlling runoff, as the vegitation on the bank has recently been cleared, and bare earth is exposed. Not sure if the area was that that favourable to newts, might be to do with smooth snakes though, arn't they about in the new forest? Edit: Just red Arbgirls link, so that explains it then
  4. Stuck in a cheery traffic jam on the A338 Nortbound last night, I got to pondering this stuff. RE: The black plastic fence... Whats the point? Who's great idea is it? Who pays for it? Can it be a money spinner?
  5. Also worth it for finding lost nuts, washers, tongs, watches, etc, etc.
  6. Pointless?? That was aimed towards my edit, not the whole thread (otherwise I would have just typed "I think its pointless" in my post wouldn't I ? Anyway. More info on this most intriguing thread gleaned. Slowly building up a picture.
  7. Maybe Dave is really called Rodney??? If Rodneys won, what's he gonna do now? NOT write a book you reckon? It may be trickey to get someone else to employ him (is he a trouble maker?). Set up on his own possably. Oh no that's no good. He may then become part of the (ahem) ruling classes (ahem) and become part of the problem. It so complicated :-( ................................................... .................................No, you're right. I haven't got the slightest idea either. Maybe someone in the know could start up a totally unrelated thread. Call it something like "The adventures of Rodney", with a link or an explaination?
  8. Bolt

    Husky 51

50:1 will be fine (make sure its proper 50:1 rated oil. The stuff for outboard boat engines or lawnmowers ain't no good) :-)
  9. Good trucks on the road. Loads of seats. Fuel tank is VERY low. Very easy to overload. Very easy to get stuck (like on moss, leaves etc) I like 'em.
  10. I have always assumed manufacturers would design machines with a chain speed somewhere between 20m/s and 24m/s so as to ensure they are 'compatable' with class 1 PPE. As previously said, maintaining that speed (max torque at the RPM you need) should be a more important consideration. As for Husq vs stihl, I suppose 'brand loyalty' is very exciting when you first start, but after a while, all you want is a saw that starts when you want it to, cuts at the speed you need, and dosn't break too quick. (helps if its a nice colour though)
  11. That can't be it. The bloke who was using it before me used to travel about in a Vitara?
  12. Out of genuine interest, Is this true, or simply an urban myth. As I am often asked "who says we can't use it on the ground". The rozzers arn't going to stop and on-the-spot fine you as they pass are they? HSE are for to busy, I believe, reacting to incidents that have happened to worry about pro-active police-ing. You employer certainly isn't going to fine you. Just wondered if anyone knew anything? :lol:I am happy to issue a £2k fine if it makes anyone feel better.
  13. Behold the mighty 'xplore'. Xplore Technologies Tablet PC designed to withstand the rigors of military life- the cold of the frozen North. The heat of Iraq. The dust of Afghanistan. The moistness of the open Indian ocean. It laughs at the wilds! You therefore have to wonder how this happened to the screen on Friday. It spent its day relaxing on the front seat of the Freelander with a couple of phones and some paperwork for company, whist the rest of us slogged away clearing trees overhanging pole mounted substations. Amazingly, the touchscreen still works, so it can still work aswell.... although TBH its main occupation these days is remote arbtalking :-). Can't help but think were living on borrowed time......Maybe an IPhone next...
  14. Chainsaw starting idea is OK. But not the 'warm start' between your legs...... Much better with the cold start technique that gets taught on basic courses (you know, foot through the rear handle, lean right over, and do a sharp reverse punch)
  15. Just like Gunnislake (Devon / Cornwall border). At least their landfill problems are over
  16. IMO, "Keeping a lid on it" (the older thread) seems to point towards the fact that... Its old info. Its the publicity departments fault. The college uses all the latest tools and equipment. whereas "chin strap" (a shiney, brand new thread) highlights... husky knicker elastic lids are sill in use. If you talk to management they are not interested. You are better of with your own PPE. Maybe I will re-read them

The voting is currently very close. "love" 26% "Like" 26% "Hate" 27% Good job the poll is fixed to split the "pro" vote. Hope they don't unite and form a coalition. Ha Ha
  18. lesser spotted's are tiny (only a bit bigger than a robin I believe). Think its a greater spotted.
  19. It was worth asking tho'. After all, what have you got 'to loose' #1 #1 and that, my friends, is the oldest 'joke' on arbtalk this WEEK. Thankyouverrymuch.
  20. Is is me, or does the above thread seem to get contradicted by this more recent one? http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/climbers-talk/16911-chin-strap.html
  21. The stinging, I believe, is caused by petrol (monster munch's secret and most important ingredient). It's not 2 stroke though, that would just be silly.
  22. Priorities time indeed. Options are>>> Make lots of money. Get an education. Get a job where unique charateristics are respected. >>> any others?
  23. Love the scale of your woodturning. The plate is also great, and from an offcut! Shame the beard has gone. Would have been purfect for the "mugshots" thread.
