  1. Geoff, there's nothing improper about it, I agree - although hoping for someone to pay a tenner is ambitious!
  2. £10 starting bid for this?! Pallett Wood Or Firewood | eBay
  3. A 30mph dumper! You'd get some funny looks nipping to the shops for a pound of sausages in that!
  4. I've seen a Solo 646 with 18 inch bar, bag, gloves, chain oil and 2 stroke for sub £190, including delivery. I don't need a saw but am tempted to buy one as a spare!
  5. The normal way to measure CV is via a bomb calorimeter, which isn't as exciting as it sounds. Small amount of fuel in a twin-skinned metal box, with water between the two skins. Set light to the fuel and measure how much warmer the water gets. Since we know the volume of water and the specific heat capacity per unit (i.e. how much energy has to be put into water to make it warm up by one degree) we can then work out how much heat has been given off by the burning fuel.
  6. I have a Yeti Greenline 2 (1.6 TD, 2wd only) as my work car. I've done 32k miles in the last 18 months, including drives to the Bay of Biscay and down to Austria from the UK. It has delivered between 52 and 53 mpg overall, with the best ever average being 74.3mpg for a drive from Stoke-on-Trent to Warwick where most of the M6 was on 50mph cameras. It's comfortable and fairly refined to drive - low wind noise particularly. Plus for the times when I have needed to do so, the fact that the rear seats can be completely removed is definitely handy. I suppose the downsides are that the engine sounds like a bag of spanners being dropped down a liftshaft, and the price. I see four year old Yetis are still being priced at nearly £10k. Strong money when a couple of months ago Vauxhall were clearing brand new old shape Zafira 1.7TDCi for £11k or so.
  7. Carmageddon on PC and now also on iPad! Wasted a few hours on that recently... Road Rash II on the Megadrive. Never been much into combat games or first person shoot-em-ups, although I did play Tomb Raider when the other half had it on her PC as a student.
  8. Coal is definitely not homogenous, in the same way that oak, ash and pop don't burn identically. There are a wide range of calorific values, sulphur contents, grindability, volatility etc. Power stations were designed with certain coals in mind, e.g. stations to burn South Wales coal had taller boilers as the coal was slower burning and therefore needed. At the other end of the scale there is lignite and then "coals" like US Powder River Basin, which although just about classed as a hard coal spontaneously degrades on exposure to air. http://krtcommodities.com/files/PRB%20COAL%20DEGRADATION.pdf
  9. That depends on how big a bonfire you like! Just kidding, wish I had 20 IBCs of any wood stacked up.
  10. Just bought a Titan secondhand off fleabay, £26 and had been used to cut down four domestic connies. Plus to saw the roots out of the ground, by the state of the chain. Anyway, I'd got some other Oregon 91 57 link chains, so swapped a sharpened chain onto it and away we go. Plus points - more power than I was expecting, made short work of a few bits of stump and bits I'd got knocking around. Downside - not as quiet as I was hoping for - but then I suppose it is a 2000w motor. I should be pleased to have got one before the Eurocrats decide only a 1000w motor is allowed!
  11. I realised a couple of weeks ago that I'd gone about a month without having a drink-free day - on holiday in a Germany for a couple of weeks so enjoyed the 50p a bottle beers, plus bought some Weissbier home. I wasn't getting drunk, just a couple of 500ml bottles each night, but still shocked me a bit when I realised how long it had gone on. I've now gone back to my old routine, which was "dry Sunday to Thursday" and a few beers on Friday and Saturday. I do notice that after three or four days off the booze, I feel better - but at the same time, don't feel like I could knock it on the head completely. Kicked the fags a few years ago though - had been an on-and-off smoker since about 14 years old, but finally worked out that even after only one or two Marlboro lights I was waking up with a nicotine hangover. Had one big night out, smoked about 25 fags, was literally laid out until about 1pm the next day whereas my non-smoker mate was up and about at sensible o'clock. That did it for me, enough. 12. If you want something to try, blackcurrant brandy. Bottle of brandy, 350g sugar, 900g blackcurrants. Crush the fruit slightly in a sterilised preserving jar, put in sugar, pour brandy over the top and shake gently until all the sugar is dissolved. Leave in a dark place for two months, shaking gently occasionally. Drink as a mixer with champagne or neat. And the boozy fruit can be kept for cooking with! ;-) Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App

  18. Ring it into 250mm - 300mm rings. Stack at point of cutting. Take photos and list on eBay as free firewood for collection. Offer customer £50 off for the disruption of having to let people into their garden to collect the wood. Then sit back on the beach and relax with a nice cream and beer... Blood

I'm up to about 28 donations but have had a few on and off years. My thought was always that if me or my family were ever in need, I'd hope the blood would be available. So if I should expect someone else to have given their blood, then I should be prepared to give mine too. End of. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App

  24. I did my own a few years ago, 8 by 6 but built on 3x3 cross section base, marine grade walls covered with ship lap to look better, made my own hinged windows, 3x2 framing. I wouldn't say it was difficult, I took a bit of time to think about what I wanted but did a lot of making it up as I went along. It was still standing when we moved house a couple of years later, never built with dismantling in mind and sadly was too bloody heavy to move intact unless I'd hired a very large crane to reach core a terraced house! I think from memory it cost about the same as buying one from a shed maker (not a DIY chain) but was about 5 times as solid... Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
