  1. Thats what i do but i put 5 or 6 stitches in different angles (kind of spiralling) underneath the whipping first. Have you seen or tried Brion Toss' method of pulling threads as markers then stitching them in? Might give it a go tomorrow evening.
  2. Fair comment!
  3. I don't mean to sound unsensitive but surely wearing plastic is the same thing? Plastic is made from oil, which is produced naturally from decomposed vegetation and animals
  4. Nice! Gotta get me that app and start playing!
  5. Have you tried emailing the seller on eBay as he's been selling them for years?? Maybe he read the Stein Arbor Trolley thread on here, so he withdrew his splitters from eBay in case Arbtalk started on him next!
  6. Nice! What software did you use drew?? My aunty has a canvas of Padstow which has been made with this effect... So effective!
  7. Thanks Peter!
  8. What lock stitch method do you use? Along the entire length of the splice or just under the whipping? I need to renew the whipping on an old shop bought lanyard as its started to fray so this got me thinking!
  9. For all you splicers out there; With a double-braid (class 1) splice, how do you all finish your splices off? I have been doing alot of reading and i'm wondering whether a splice has to be lock stitched and whipped for: a) safety, and b) loler in the uk? All my double braid splices are Lock stitched (under the whipping, so not the full length of the splice) and whipped but i know that are alot of splicers which either don't bother for double braid, only whip, or lock stitch the entire length of the splice- with and without whipping. I have seen an invisible lock stitch guide which uses whipping twine which looks good but also Brion Toss' invisible lock stitch by pulling 2 strands during the splice and stitching them after. Has anyone tried this?? Personally, i would like to do away with whipping on my splices, so the invisible lock stitch maybe the way forward. I look forward to your views!
  10. Just re-read my post and what I meant was they're good for vehicle maintenance 'as well' as heavy duty work such as wheel nuts, driveshaft nuts, etc. I would put a wager on them shifting your mog's wheel nuts!
  11. I have used loads of different types of cordless 1/2" drive impact guns; dewalt 18v, snap on 24v, makita 18v..... By a long way, the best is an Hitachi 18v lithium WR18DL. They are half the size of most of the other brands and are ideal for general vehicle maintenance. They claim 220NM of peak torque which is massive for such a small gun. Just looked online and you can pick them up for around £250 with x2 batteries. Bargain!
  12. Makes the job a bit more interesting! :-) Heres a small job from new years day.... Not a great start to the year for the Rav4's owner! There was so much weight on the front r/h wing, the rear l/h wheel was nearly in the air!
  13. Hey Matt, did you have any dealings with the big lime tree down in Queens avenue, Dorchester?? It came down right opposite my parents place earlier this week. My mother is now paranoid about the whole avenue of trees!!
  14. No it probably wouldn't have stopped this customer from cancelling the job but it may help in the future. I don't want to ever do work for this guy again, and I bet the tree will still be standing this time next year as he's such a PITA! I should find out which Indian restaurant he owns, place an order, then haggle him down! ;-)
  15. I wouldn't mind a copy too if that's ok Gibbon?? Got messed about today... Had a job booked in for next Monday and Tuesday and the customer phoned earlier to say he's had a cheaper quote, and if I still want to do the job, I will have to match it! I had emailed the quotation but had verbal confirmation of the job! I just knew he was going to be trouble! I won't lower my price out of principle (and because there would be no money in it at that price) and next time I have a "suspiciously" awkward customer, I will definitely get it in writing! Had to let 2 subbies down who I had booked for next week too.
  16. correct!
  17. hey slack, did you split and dry any of that poplar from last summer and burn it? I've only been burning poplar for the last 6 weeks and i don't know why it has such a bad reputation. Mine is around 20%MC and it doesn't burn too quick.... granted the heat output is a little less but once the house is warm i don't want blazing heat. Its all i have left to sell this winter and i'm selling it a little less to customers and explain what wood it is, and how it has a bad rep, etc. and everyone is more than happy! I have even had repeat orders specifying poplar! P.s. did you get my PM from a few weeks ago?
  18. It tells you on the environment agency website that a tree surgeon carrying green waste doesn't need a WCL: http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/static/documents/Business/Who_should_register.pdf Scroll down to page 4 and says that trees surgeons with green waste don't need a WCL until after December 2013! I have printed this off and keep a copy in the truck just incase i get pulled. I have put this link up before on here but people still don't believe it because "mr environment agency" has told them they need one! If its in back and white on their website, they haven't got a leg to stand on. For those of you who have bought one, i would fight it out to get a refund out of principle!
  19. It means the core of the rope is the primary strength, and the outer cover is secondary.
  20. Thanks! Must have had finger trouble!
  21. Has anyone else's tapatalk changed?? I went onto mine this morning and on my iPhone and the screen has changed. Instead of it showing the latest threads, it shows the category it comes under. I used to like the way it showed the latest topics and you could have a browse through but now it's a PITA! See screen shot below: Is it something which can be changed? I can't seem to find "settings" on tapatalk.
  22. Ocean Polyester is class 1 but AFAIK it only comes in 8mm and 10mm. Ocean Vectran is 6mm but is core dependent so is class 2 (As i have just found out in another thread i started.)
  23. Cheers Drew, puts my mind at rest!
  24. Mmmm.... i'd better find out for sure that is green and yellow OP that i've spliced as i've done a class1 splice on it! Its construction looks the same as the conventional coloured OP that i normally climb on. Do they do OV in 8mm? All the searches i've made online only mention a 6mm OV. And, i can't find any reference to a green coloured OP! Its a bit scary that they make 2 ropes with different construction, the same colours!
  25. Yeah mines yellow/green.... Looks nice against my new orange lanyard!! :-)
