  1. Saw a company craning down a beech yesterday, road side, and I mean the stem was roadside, the canopy must've been right over the road. Yet no signs, cones or even hi vis! Why go to the effort of a crane but ignore the basic requirements of safety:confused1:
  2. Last time I did a bit of free climbing was in a veteran pollard oak, climbed up and into the hollow stem, entrance approx 14ft from the ground. What did I find? Wasps nest!!!!! Back out fast as I could and jumped/fell to the ground, cutting my arms on the bark and legged it! Funny thing is, the time I was looking at it before, approx a year earlier, I found a bees nest in the ground nearby. Also I'm allergic to both!
  3. Just had a look at the map, am I right in thinking it's just underneath stansted airport? Should be at least three of us coming down, possibly four or five if I can convince the others to get up early in a sunday!
  4. Ground boots always worked well for me, until my new pair that is. Now on specifically designed for climbing type. I wouldn't worry too much what kind they are as long as they're ankle supportive/steel toecap.
  5. If your other leg and hand are vacant I'm guessing you're talking about when covering a reasonable distance? Maybe worth an srt setup to maximise efficiency/reduce fatigue/speed things up?
  6. With the pantin on I usually let my leg do all the work, one hand on each end of the rope, for stability and upright-ness more than anything. The other leg I swing for a bit of momentum and to stop me spinning
  7. Would it not mean the ascender was pointless as it wouldn't go up very far without hitting the bottom of the sj? Otherwise you'd have to put it much further away? 2ft perhaps? I've always found a pantin on it's own does the job on ddrt, hand ascenders are a bit cumbersome considering the 2' pull/1' gained scenario. I may have to try it out again though...
  8. With the top pulley on a moveable positioner or tied of at anchor? Tried both with a lj, worked nice but need to be on a long tether with a pulley tied in close as a fairlead
  9. Someone else got their hands on steves pc and started pressing things, perhaps someone young?
  10. Seen the same thing inside decayed sycamore and horse chestnut, the latter covering a distance of about 25 ft!
  11. Be down there about 9am if thats cool with you?
  12. I was hoping you'd say that! Might as well make a day of it!
  13. Trying to start something similar on the mainland uk, if it takes off it might be worth a little travelling. Watch this space....
  14. Try posting that here; http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/climbers-talk/36502-hatfield-forest-essex-rec-climb-sunday-27th.html You might have more luck....if the link works
  15. Looking at a few sites sherwood ish way. Got a seat or two in the car from lincoln to hatfield this weekend if you fancy that trek?
  16. I'm coming! As I've already posted elsewhere I'm travelling from Lincoln with a few spare seats so anyone in need of a lift let me know. See you there!
  17. Was thinking the same thing.I'll let you do it as it's your place:thumbup: I'm coming from lincoln with between 2/3 seats in the car if anyone wants a lift along the way? I'll repost that on the new thread too. Be coming down the a1 so if you let me know somewhere we can meet up that would be cool. Dan
  18. This week would suit me best if possible? The 27th I think that would be.
  19. Well up for it! Will have a look in the calendar tonight when I get in and let you know which would be better for me. Il try to bring a few guys from work too
  20. Seriously? That would be cool if possible!
  21. Glad too see there is a bit if interest. I'll start questioning some potential site owners/managers and see what I can sort out. I reckon it'll be best to wait until spring time weather wise. I'll keep you all posted on any plans. Cheers for the responses guys!
  22. My strech airs didn't last well at all. Sip seemed harder wearing to me
