  1. A stump borer could work (auger torque do one). It's about 200mm diameter.
  2. I could see how accelerating out of it on going up hill would work but not on the flat or downhill. You don't want to turn a 50mph snaking trailer into a 60+mph snaking trailer.
  3. I agree with Matthew. Second hand diggers really hold their value (often unwarranted in my opinion). I bought my machine at 2 years old and 500 hours for £10k. I expect it'll still be worth £6k in 5 years. Buy new or nearly new if you can. It came with a grader bucket. In addition I bought a tooth digging bucket, a narrow digging bucket, a fixed grab and a auger torque head with two flights. You can clear brambles and scrub, fencing, feeding chippers, drainage, etc, etc. As Matthew says one machine can do so much work.
  4. I have a komatsu pc14 and really rate it. Expanding tracks, double acting aux circuit as standard.
  5. Sweeping generalisation but X5 or range rover sport towing a speed boat on a weekend! I see then all the time doing 80 down the M3. Crazy.
  6. I thinks it's only Pickups that are pre 2002 (either no modification) that are an issue (all makes and models). 2002 onwards is ok as long as it's under 3499kg.
  7. I agree with big J. Pickups have a big overhang, couple this with a long trailer (lm166 in our case) and you have a serious pivot point. It's also very easy to just 'bung it on the trailer, it'll be ok'. Spend time loading properly and have loads of ratchets. We were carrying a bit of plant (around 1600kg) and it snapped 5 X 5 ton ratchet straps when we crashed. Luckily the cargo went a different direction to us. Somewhat ironically I am a very cautious tow'er and am constantly on guard. I'm the annoying person who sits at 50 on the motorway with a trailer but my saying is - better to delay 10,000 people than kill one. As soon as I feel/see it step out of line I drop a gear and slow it all down. I have heard people say about accelerating out of it but I would never follow that advice personally. If you are likely to crash, more momentum is not what I want.
  8. I wasn't driving but the front passenger. Heavy trailer, downhill stretch of the A303, about 55mph. 'Tramlines' in the slow lane caused a sudden jolt and pulled the pickup towards the verge. Driver tried to correct but once the snake was happening there didn't seem like much would stop it. No hard shoulder either, just gravel - which as soon as we put a tyre into, it was all over. Up a steep bank and back on our roof. Skidded along for what felt like 2 minutes. Amazingly no one hurt. The ranger had seen better days though!

  10. With the blades so close together - What would you use that for? I've seen multi blade Posch bench saws set at 25cm for chopping billets.
  11. I've got an Exeter retort. It's 1.6 cubic metre charge. This usually produces 90-100kg per burn. I couldn't see how big that one's was in the picture but it looked quite 'stumpy' .
  12. You have their address - send an registered post invoice stating you'll put it to small claims court in 7 days. Bids are binding (the hassle of chasing depends in the seller though).
  13. Not a lot of money for a decent arc welder and some accessories and its certainly be a good project to learn to weld. Conversely you could also spend money on a holiday! It does look a bit small. Maybe 50-60 kg of charcoal a burn. Maybe a lot less. Good luck either way.
  14. Perhaps it might be best to let nature reclaim then. If the main chamber is a bit iffy then it could well ignite during a burn and you find you have a bit of trouble keeping the whole thing from rocketing up temperature wise. I have a retort and unattended it could easy reach temperatures of 700c, where things start to go wrong.
  15. Could be an interesting project if you have the time. If its for free then some steel and rods is a reasonable spend. Worst case you could run it in for the steel and recoup a bit. If it's a 'purchase' I'd be very apprehensive.
  16. Start at the trade price then. If people knew the minimum price the seller will accept then they can make a more informed decision before placing a bid. Why accept bids of £100 if you will not take less that £500. The current prices 'have not met the reserve' so are meaningless.
  17. Yeah, probably high reserves and result in hardly any sales. Just like on ebay, if you want an auction then have a proper one. Start low and highest bidder takes it. If you had a price in mind then just do a straight sale. Saving wasting lots of people's time.
  18. If it works for you then great but can see how it would be worthwhile for £100 a go. The hook loader skip set up drying costs a couple of grand. If it's just a standard skip that you are tipping out and putting it cages then this is a bit of time and diesel being used. The cost of a bit of phone/admin/invoicing. Insurance, tax, etc. Can't be much left in it even if you had 5 or 6 of these on the go a week. Why not just vent this excess heat into a poly tunnel and grow something?
  19. My answer is never try and help out members of the public. People ask for a log for an 'art project' , you end spending 15 minutes with them choosing then have to lug it into the car for them. Offered a free tip site, find out there is no access and has to be wheel barrowed, etc, etc, etc! Its never easy. In the OPs case - 'I didnt have any laurel on my chip pile and certainly didn't allow anyone to take any'. 'If you have the persons name that would be great as we deal with all thefts via the police.'

Having 'recovered' several cars, motorbikes and a golf cart from rivers in London I can only imagine everything will be covered in sludge and would need a huge amount of cleaning before you could even see the damage. A guy once asked me if i knew the definition of a boat. He said it was a hole in the water into which you throw money!
  21. Interesting to know how it could be done. With it being submerged in muddy water 4 months would it be salvageable? No experience myself but imagine it would be pretty buggered.
  22. Agreed. I've bought and hired from them many times. Be great if they put a multione in their hire fleet.

  24. Unfortunately it probably isn't. Claim on the insurance and try and beef up security for future. Best you can (legally) do.
  25. The worst I got was a week of towing a tracked Timberwolf shredder on a plant trailer (so about 2300kg) and I got 127 miles to a full tank. 9 and a bit MPG!
