  1. Has water got into the 7/13 pin plugs? I had this and the electrics were doing all sorts.
  2. Marine ply will look good to start with but I really doubt it would last. My advise is spend the extra now and it will be cheaper in the long run.
  3. I've heard these referred to as 'wrist breakers'......
  4. That makes sense that it's a kit. As I mention the alloy has got to cost about that. Sounds like a good buy. It'll be a lot of riveting but could be a good option. Ally planking looks the business in my opinion.
  5. My four aluminium dropside come in at 56kg in total. This is 3.2m long and 40cm height each. Significantly heavier that a steel sheet I'd expect. It is pretty sturdy though. I have a couple of steel box sections running across the top.
  6. Sounds like a good deal - Too good to be fair. The ally would cost that. I'd expect you would weld two bars onto the rear columns and then just bolt or monobolt rivet it to the rest. Depends on if you want to have it removable.
  7. With your set up Steve, would it be worth switching into a swb 6.5t - 7.5t vehicle? Iveco 65c dropside for example. I've seen a few with auto and cruise control - would be a relatively comfy way to transport 3t on long journeys.
  8. You may find the mwb body length is different between the double cab and single cab. In my experience the double can is 2.8 long and single 3.2. I have pretty much the same van (but with ally sides). I build this using ally planks from service metals and just bolted it on. Cost me £400. It can be done cheaper but sprayed white in my case they look professional and are only a 5 minute job to put on or off.
  9. With respect to them (and it would be great if it wasn't the case) but leaving any equipment in vans overnight is risky. On a public road is really risky. Skeleton key or not you'd be rolling the dice every night as to whether you survive a break in. Locked garage with shielded, battery back up alarms all the way.
  10. What i dislike is long term consultants. For a project of up to 6 months or so when you need certain skills then get a 'consultant' but there are loads of examples of consultant being there for 5 years or more. Even worse they are ex members of staff!
  11. I do a lot of stem injection and the recommendation is neat normally. Highly effective though. I've hit 1000 stems in an area and not seen it return in the following 5 years. Its a sh*t job though, crawling around in a JK jungle for days at a time.
  12. I hate single stake plantings. To save £2....
  13. Absolutely fair enough though - you buy new so you expect it to be perfect. Scratches and niggles are not acceptable. I am surprised by the mole valley discount - wonder what's in it for them. On a top spec auto thats got to be £4.5 off list.
  14. That's not an insignificant list of issues!
  15. Jokes aside I would look at an electric transit t350 if they did one. For stop start work in London (watering contracts, basal growth, planting, etc) it would be well suited. Diesel is pretty much the only option though.
  16. I have heard of increased engine temperature and boost pressure leading to premature failings of turbos etc. Hard to tell how accurate it is though. I often think (without too much of a sweeping generalisation) that someone having a remap will be someone looking to push their engine harder (acceleration or heavy towing) so not necessarily the fault of the remap.
  17. The original talk was £3.5k for your old vehicle then several £k off a new 'clean' vehicle. This would be tempting, £2k is hardly worth the bother when you look at how quickly thing depreciate.
  18. So fraud then. 'Creative accounting' or altering of accounts to reflect anything other than the truth is a criminal offences and would be dealt with by the serious fraud office. In this case public funds are being used to benefit private individuals. Private individuals quoted for/chosen by the council officers. This falls foul of a significant number of laws and would never stand up to public scrutiny.
  19. Just my humble opinion but my experience of the USA is there are a lot of wannabee lumberjacks/outdoors men types. Nearly everyone i met outside the cities had a chainsaw and happily would get up a ladder to hack at, what is by british standards, was a very large tree. Inexperienced operators using large chippers is going to result in more casualties.
  20. I can't answer why they think this but it I my experience that they do ask 'whilst you are here could you just.....'
  21. Completely agree. You can't have an authoritive control over something such as TPO's / conservation areas and have a commercial interest in it. It would be a huge conflict of interests. A council would need to be to prove a clear financial seperation between the different aspects of its operations, which it could not possibly do. VAT, corporation tax, are the staff in anyway subsidised by the tax payer, can council staff employ the tree contractors to work on their own property (anti bribery etc), split of equipment purchases/maintenance/depreciation, staff pensions, etc. No way this would stand up to property scrutiny. I would email the leader of the council and copy in your MP, your local ward councillors and the leader of the opposition locally.
  22. I don't think its a 'take it leave it attitude' , it is more that I've done what was agreed and you want me to do extra its going to be £xxx more. You have to be firm, if you give an inch they'll try and take a mile. We are in one of those trades where people think they can just ask for extra for nothing. Value your time, put it on your quote that extra time is available at £xxx per 15 minutes should you have anything pop up whilst we are there....
  23. Ah, you're probably right. Been a long day....
  24. I just had one on hire today. Needed a tracked machine as we were on an island with only small bridge across. Overall I liked it. The two speed tracking was useful for the longer runs. Felt stable with the tracks expanded. The chipping speed was comparable with the older models but I found the wider mouth to be useful for brashy stuff.
  25. I'd agree. An eye for and eye and we all go blind. You can both find endless ways to annoy each other.
