  1. Saw this on ebay. Really tidy looking truck. Not specficially in this case but I find mileage can be deceptive on council vehicles. I used to drive a council van and it only did 6k a year but this was stop start driving in traffic in London traffic - I'd put it on par with doing 18k a year normally. Condition is obviously key, the front seats and door sills are usually the key indicator.
  2. Can't tell exactly from the article but does it sound like he had removed some if the guarding or failed to add additional.
  3. This is more complicated as it has duality of purpose. The business could buy the hardtop but if you make use of it when using the car personally you have to put it on you p11d as a taxable benefit. Might be extreme but the same would be necessary if the business paid for a tow bar to be fitted for work use but you used it to tow a private caravan. From what you are saying Id say you should keep your vehicle within your business for the time being. In a few years you can sell it to yourself and make use of the 45p. Obviously before that have a major service, new tyres and buy the hardtop. Just my 2 cents.
  4. The business can own/lease the vehicle and pay all the bills. Or you own the car personally and claim 45p for everything, including the fuel. My understanding of it and i am 99% sure i have it right.
  5. A pertinent question might be - are you likely to work for them again? The outcome maybe influenced by this.
  6. The 45p is a business expense and 100% deductible. It is also tax free as an individual so regardless of your salary/dividends you can claim £4,500 PA (if you do the full 10,000 pa). So you reduce your business tax bill but pay no tax on it as income personally. Maybe not worth if for 1000 miles but from 5000 miles onwards it is an efficient option. It will hinge on how much the vehicle actually costs to run.
  7. I don't think this scenario would be tax efficient. It is more the case that the business buy the van new (say £30k for example) and runs it for 5 years. At 5 years you buy the vehicle from the business for £10k (or a justifiable price, ie a PX amount youve been offered). You then run the van personally and claim 45p a mile for business usage up to 10,000 mile PA.
  8. I think that's why I will never be a good climber. I fixate on the risks too much that it slows me down in comparison to others. In an often productivity fueled world best practises are not encouraged or adopted. As has been mentioned human error is often the issue. They happen to the best of us though - tired, rushing to get something finished, momentarily distracted. I read somewhere most accidents happen in the last half hour of the working day.
  9. I think you're right there. Confusion is often all that ensues! Atleast you can kid yourself you did the research and found the best option!
  10. Yep. I have never looked into contract hire on machinery (arblease et al). Do you have an annual number of hours? Must be a hard business model for them. On a tractor you could have 1000 hours of amenity mowing or 1000 hours of heavy ploughing. Be interesting to know more.
  11. That's the best way but it hinges on you having the money to do so! I am a big fan of outright purchases (have done for my tractor, chippers, excavator) but cash flow is king. Contract hire or finance has its place. Finding £1000 a month for 2 years can be a lot less stressful than spending £20k and finding your a uber tight for a couple of months.
  12. Great looking bit of kit. Do you know how much a engcon tilt rotator set up cost on a 2.5-3t machine?
  13. I read today Bristol is cutting it's funding for parks is being cut to zero from 2019 for all but H&S items.
  14. Perhaps you're right. £500 would put off minor moaners atleast....
  15. Which council is this and what are the specific details of their response? I can't imagine any council requesting money up front for enforcement related issues.
  16. Exactly! It's often some wally who did one minor job for a council 24 years ago.....

  18. I got an x2500 on the recommendations made by Matt. I've found it to be great. My only addition is spend the extra on the two pin with cradle. I went with the standard one pin and you are often waiting on it to stop swinging before you can get started.

Having clocked up over 7500 cuts I can say I like them. These have been 30-40mm limes branches so nothing too major but by now my hands would be aching if using manual snips. The backpack is comfortably and light so you barely know it's there. The cutters are heavier than snips but you soon adjust and because I am essentially just holding them in place and pressing a button it's pretty easy going compared to squeezing every time. I could manage a 8 hour shift using them no bother. They have impressive power as well - I chopped up 80mm robinia branch and it felt effortless. By the end of the season and an estimated half million cuts I'll know for sure but thumbs up so far. I think if you doing 5-7 metre limes (on bus routes for example) from a MEWP then these would make an awesome combo.
  20. I do commercial and local authority work so always send a quote a day after a site visit. I need to make sure I've not over looked anything as my customers would accept estimates - they want a fixed price they can rely on. I may k ow at the end of the visit exactly what I'll be charging but best to stick to my protocol. Obviously a bit in the T and C s about unforseen circumstances but 99.9% of the time I deliver for the price or take a small hit myself.
  21. Air con and cruise are a great extra. Sitting in 33c in traffic this week in the transit is hellish.
  22. Really nice finish on that arb truck. Very professional. Looks to be aluminium planking bolts to the original tipper. You would have any close ups of the joints would you? Be interesting to see how's it done. I've recently built ally planking sides for my transit - which I'm happy with but no where near as slick looking as your set up.
  23. Sorry, not particularly useful but I had my first experience of hot weather starting problems. It was 33c and I found my stihl blower and hedge trimmer both difficult to get going. Never had issues before. I had to prime them even if I had been using them 15 mins before.
