now showing sky 529 repeat 700 am channel 530 'americas toughest jobs ,team of novices have the pleasure of meeting the all male all american no prisoners taken 'rygard loggers' (axe men ) .Did the tv producers really do risk assesment or are they looking for blood ?
  3. The comments about buying a large wood and sub-dividing to make a serious profit by milking small investors is nothing new , farm land has trebbled in the last five years probably because city investors see it as a safe bet that has potential to beat bank of england 0.5 % base rate.Farm land is now too expensive to buy and farm .
  4. Depends on how far apart you are putting the posts and height of feather edge boards I always believe in using a high speck/over engineering so that it doesn't sag or warp when the customers neighbour looks at it ,with a view to giving you more work. They always notice a cut price job .
  5. . I would like to buy a block with a fishing lake and no public access poss selfish but want to make a bit of dosh from camp site and fishing pegs
  6. massey 390 far better than case 685 but will be more money I think £6K for that case from the 1980's is too much anyway
  7. :confused1:Police in Grimsby believe that marks ( open wounds ) made on trees in a local park have been made by 'nice people' inciting their Staffy-type dogs to get aggresive ,similar attacks have been recorded in London (as seen on BBC Look North )
  8. Self employment doesn't have too many advantages ,motoring costs ,but percentage allowance for personal use , but the sting in the tail is if self employed then more expenses and responsiblities ( insurance PPE own kit etc all tax deductable but how long will you have to work to pay these fixed costs back ) dont forget you still have to pay insurance and bank loans even when your not earning. Self employment means no paid holiday, no sick leave, but you do learn to work and get on with the job. I've been self employed for over twenty years when things is good out there it's OK .
  9. the 399 still well sought after more than the 390T the difference ; 399 six cylinder therefore longer than the 390T (4 cyl turbo) more manouverable , best 6 cyl tractor of that era Case IH 956 ( cummings engine)
  10. want a new tree winch ,Tirfor appear to be the Rolls Royce , but other "similar" devices are available at lower prices , are they cheap imitations or globally competetive ? Whats your experiences good/bad , know of any good deals ?
  11. looking for a winch , tirfor seems to be the Rolls Royce but there are other "similar" products available at less money , are the cheap ones false economy or just fair global competition, your experiences please / do you know of good deals out there.?

  12. I would have thought that renting a barn from farmer is best option. Should be no buisness rates as farm and foresrty business is exempt .Keep on good terms with your farmer , he has tractors loading shovels outside storage areas,he might even have a firewood outlet .I speak as farmer and arb .
  13. may I wish all arbtalkers and others a merry xmas and a healthy , wealthy , and happy new year .Healthy - if we all were then the NHS could shut down and save tax pounds . Wealthy - we all earnt so much money that we pay enough tax to refloat the bank of England. Happy - the last two would make the politicians exstatic . Whats that I hear you say you DONT believe in father christmas
  14. I m a child of the 60's left school in the 70's aged 16 older people of the time use to say National Service made men of boys ,but as a youngster I thought they were talking *&%$. We no longer have any industry left in this country ,where youngsters were paired up with older wiser staff , and had the courtesy to shut up ,do as they were told and learned by their experiences .Young people seem to think that getting a degree is the answer to all ills, but i think that they should get work experince for at least two years before going to the holiday camp (university).oh and study something useful that might put the 'Great' back into Britain and lets move back to a nation of 'do-ers' not waisters. And to the question yes they should pay it back when earning enough .
  15. You should be carefull with whom you share an office with or doesnt he keep sheep anymore . the wife might insist you get a bath straight away and come scrub your back !
  16. thats what you call 'armed and dangerous'
  17. duals are a definite no no especialy if mounted on row crops ,mud collectors ,strain on dual fixings , try Brocks of essex (farmers and machinary dealers ) near stansted airport .If changing tyre size then 28 would give more road speed but strain gearbox if big load on.Metric equivilants are available.
  18. Dont worry it happens to most of us this last march I had the good fortune to have a police sergeant , on his way to work no doubt late (not the time of the month ) he did a starsky and hutch in front of me and my trusty tractor and told me to report to him at the "office" , I did and he gave me opton of arrest or £30 FPN , what a happy start to his day !
  19. there is a calculation / ratio of weight of towing vehicle to gross train weight (car and trailer) and older toyotas being lighter than landrovers wernt legally allowed to tow as much even if engine was up to it ,but lighter toyota may keep you under the 3500 / 7500 kg limit for car licence
  20. yes good idea thanks , but I was wondering wether to do more college studying / training or just get on with life and work , what I really mean is further study worthwhile ?
  21. Forty something farmerboy wanted change so did NCH(arb) and cs30/31 last year . Where next, want to progress half way up the greasy pole as I get too old to wield the husky, already a slow climber ! ?
