  1. some people think sitting at a key board / forum is sad , but Xfactor could signal the end of civilisation . Eastenders has me looking for that short bit of rope .
  2. He possibly means number from VIN / chassis plate , if thats missing then could mean its been removed by some one who may have knicked it , look for area where paint is a bit brighter with four holes , where rivets were !
  3. If I had a big patch of ragwort ( too much to pull ) then cut with hay mower with swather ( leaves in rows ) bale it up and dump / burn . Check for any bits left , then field is clear of toxic / noxious plant. This obviously only works when sward is scalped else you leave viable plant to regrow and needs to be done before mature plants have shed their seed .
  4. AS others have said ragwort is a serious killer once it is dryed or sprayed . mow bale and burn or pull and burn. I wouldn't put horses or any stock on grass that had been sprayed for ragwort now untill next spring because it will take along time for dead plant to wither away in usual autumnal weather conditions. Pull but wear gloves !
  5. have you tried MOD Sales, Military Vehicles & Ex MOD Land Rovers for Sale ( witham specialist vehicles ) A1 south lincolnshire
  6. how long for , where , pay rate ? thirty years experience with tractor if travelable then interested , what machine to drive ?
  7. I ,m about to do the level 4 course with treelife @ syston I'm not an AA member at present , should I be ? ,convince me .I nearly joined at arb show this year but counter was a bit busy and had to get off home , rang the office next week but discount offer was for show only .
  8. yes thanks , consider any-thing, although I have been shire horse society member for 15 years . Like your signature ,we use to keep 300 ewes till 3yrs ago when lost some land, got rid of to concentrate on sucklers and trees.
  9. Went to shire horse show and sale in staffordshire yesterday to look for a potential future logging horse, not many filly foals for sale but plenty of colts, ended up buying a cracking mare in-foal for a 1000 gns got her home today , really pleased its better than buying a new saw ! Still looking for 3- 4 yr old mare thats broken to chains . Guess most of you out there won't know what I'm talking about , but there are a few horse loggers about .
  10. I run 346xp with 15 " or a 576 with 24" both good saws
  11. I would recommend slip clutch rather than shear bolt ( but needs regular maintenance ) and if well over powered then use 1000 rpm pto
  12. Sorry forgot to say , yes the new level 4 course
  13. I have signed up to do the new course at treelife , I've never been a member of AA , does that put me at a disadvantage.Does that mean that I won't be able to put letters after my name for some time after, hopefully ,completing the course.I had thought of joining but was waiting till Jan 1st to start my membership .
  14. I don't like signing up for DD via internet as I like to limit risk from those nasty little scamers / hackers plus I have this old fashioned Idea of I like to be in charge and sign the cheque , some years ago the OFT ruled that bank charges for going overdrawn , bounced cheques etc should reflect the true cost to the bank and not be a cash cow .
  15. thats a trick question , had my BT telephone bill today , they use to charge £4:50 per quarterly bill , but thats gone up by 20% this time,( now £5:40 ) if you don't pay by DD , thats how to make serious dosh ! ? I only have to pay 70 p to cash my cheques, obviously big business doesn't have such a good deal as my humble little business or is there any other explanation .?
  16. how often do you need a tractor ? if only 1/2day per week there's plenty of farmers or their sons who could do the job in a slow time .It costs alot of money to keep tractors on the legal side ,( new tyres for TW £2000 / set) insurance etc .We're farmers and arborists and the NFU dont insure tractors to haul timber but do for foestry work ( standard cover ) , that would be extra .
  17. any more for any more ( keep it clean and sensible ) thanks in anticipation .
  18. You've got to remember an option usually works best for the developer not you , he sees an oportunity gets you to agree a price and prevents you from taking other bids while he looks around for a profit . AS dave martin says go for uplift clause , which they won't really go for unless they can see a return , thats if they're serious .
  19. have both very good and seriously bad episodes with the NFU in tha last 20 years, land rover got turned over '97 ,stripped of parts and tools etc NFU said tools of my trade not insured but my diamond tiara and mink coat that I had left inside were well covered ( if only ) but two years later the whole job got knicked , paid out £10 K inc for 3 1/2 yr 90 that cost £13K + vat new . They dont pay out VAT on top .We talk to our local man every renewal , NFU is a mutual no shareholders .
  20. Expect to be off to do more study this next month , I'm looking for a new camera to take pictures of fungi , leaves etc ( close ups ) as well as the other tourist ( long distance) pics.Have got a 10mp compact , but that cost less than £100 two years ago but find when I try to take close ups they blur.budget is limited to £200 ish could any body recommend anything ,simple , or is my budget unrealistic ?
  21. It looks as if the chimney breast is larger than the opening which would suggest that the grate openning has been made smaller ( the way the bricks are laid ) , this was done years ago to faciliate smaller more efficient coal burning grates rather than wood and or factory made grates. The best way to check is make more mess/work by stripping of wall render to see where lintels are , there may be several reductions made over history. Don't forget if using a piped flue then seal of the remaining chimney colomn to reduce convection with fire proof materials
  22. thinking of buying husky 576XP 24 inch bar do I go for autotune version or standard ... heated handles or not .... I'm usually a believer in keeping things simple , is this technology a help or a hindurance ? eperiences on a post card please
  23. Firstly , could they fit everybody in for retest with in 12 months NO. If all the law abiding operators stop until tested then the gypsies with out V.E.L. driving licence, tacho,NPTC etc will be filling up more farm gateways . I think our new colour of government advocated less red tape .( recently cut school trip risk assessment )to get elected .On a more cynical note NPTC is a self funding organisation and if they expand at no cost to govermemnt and reemploy out of work civil servants thats a good un when you're looking for re-election in four years time.
  24. JUst bite the bullet and rebuild the wall ! If ten foot high and 15 ft long then it shouldn't cost any more than your excess if you reclaim the bricks " the mortar's all blown " get the climber to help clean bricks of that might educate him aswell . we've all encountered these dodgy walls and awkward neighbours . Trust , goodwill and solicitors , they don't all mix. try and keep insurers out of it they tend to get the jitters and think that you're a bad risk .
  25. I did a tidy up of a Salix babylonica last Nov ,when I emptied trailer I saved 15 lengths 150-200 mmm x 10-20 mm put them out of frost harm , forgort about them for two months rediscovered put them in water in warm house and within two weeks small roots were seen , planted out in a big tub in cold frame , now have 15 -18 inches new growth , 12 out of 15 grew despite my efforts.
