  1. deer fencing is not hard. but no courses about! it will either be as part of a bigger course, or youl need someone who knows to show you. its basically a post and wire fence, round posts to about 2meters, and wire mesh (wiv big squares) to suit, bit of chicken mesh round the bottom to keep rabbits out and roberts ya mothers brother!
  2. i dont know any personaly, but i believe barony is ok? or try the scottish school of forestry (might actualy be the same place?) try arbjobs. com, they have a directory somewhere, or http://www.fcauk.com
  3. What can i say? after visiting the treeworker stand at the apf, i was subjected yet again to great service and advice from one of the leading suppliers to the arboricultural industry. After watching master splicer Puk Kruck, with (apprentice!) hadleigh, i had a quick look around the stand. yet again the usual friendly faces to talk to, and most suprisingly not just a "alright mate", but all staff took the time to talk, listen and generally made the extra effort to make a day out worthwhile. later on, walking through the show and coming across staff members having a reccy, they didnt just walk past blindly. they came across realy friendly and was good to share a coffee with them! its good to see there is still some people who care about the industry.
  4. people have placed far too much emphasis on the basic simple tickets, and overlooked the more intense informed tickets. if this carries on, the general knowledge and skill within the industry will lessen, or at least take far longer to get to an educated level. as with some of my previous employers, some payed serious cash for my nptcs because they didnt understand the system (and didnt WANT to understand) others knew my college tickets were higher level than nptc and took them accordingly. if certain employers genuinly knew what an nptc ticket will actualy cover you for, and how instructive it is, most wouldnt bother! its not great paying for a good level college course, with the expectation of having a lesser ticket thrown in just to entice people to sign up! and colleges should know better, but i would suspect its like most things, money!
  5. thats because they are very missunderstood and over-rated, mostly by people who dont care about the trees. any one finishing a college course should be able to pass an nptc with flying colours, because its just soo easy! ive seen most ads saying "highly experienced qualified tree surgeons wanted, must have 30/31/38/39" if no-one can tell me whats wrong with that, then the whole industry is doomed, DOOMED!!!!!! its not wrong to be unaware of problems, its how you deal with it?
  6. whilst i must admit its all a shame, and a sad state of affairs. during my course, the nptcs were an additional thing, done at the end of te course assuming we did satisfactory coursework. we still only got 30/31/38/39. no fa, no mewp, no chipper etc....... the law states you must have a certificate of competance. it does not state "nptc cert of competance". your college course certificate is a certificate of competance and proves you have been taught and assessed to a high standard in tree care. if a muppett of an employer wants to pay several thousand for you to have an additional tickets, let them!! a college course will also cover you for many things to a higher standard than an nptc ever will. an nptc ticket is origionally meant for untrained employees already working in the industry, to prove some level of competance and to keep the employer within the law by making sure all employees are competant. its just been taken out of all proportion.
  7. try the "industry best practices" in the training and education forum.
  8. hiya! my titanium ones are great, as fi says. ive also got a spare pair of the steel versions, i could let you have them for a reasonable price? they are still boxed, as new.
  9. the origional is not a 4.5 you need to identify the chain and go from there. generally your looking at a 13/64 or a 7/32 assuming its the genuine chain. an aftermarket could be any size!
  10. walkin back from the valmet stand, some idiot pulled barrier tape cross the track! i was just about to curse n swear and go around the long way, when three rather pretty and scantily clad girls walked out and did a dance!! thought it was only polite to watch!
  11. dont ask moo, im crip at spolling!!
  12. the stihls used to be 66, and was changed upto 67 a year or so back!
  13. well lets see....... free entry for three days, free camping for three days, free breakfasts, and food all three days, sold a fair bit of second-hand gear, even blagged a stihl timbersports banner! the moral of the story is..........enter a competition or help out on a stand, the experience is priceless
  14. i believe the veterans catagory is 40+. did ya see george tipping at the apf? 77yrs and does it for charity!
  15. too much!!! but i did manage to get one of the timbersports banners!
  16. i think it would just be the same as the stihl/husky saw debate!!
  17. my 420 is great, but could be a tad ott, a bg86 is more then enough for just blowing off after a job
  18. sounds like a good idea. in most cases, forestry is a dying art, as most of it has moved abroad nowadays. and the obvious AO courses are more basic than the tech cert, so wont prove to be useful. maybe work on a felling contract with a few old-timers? just listening to the stories.
  19. Who's eating at the campsite? id like to, but as they need several orders to make opening viable, it would be good to go as a rabble!

    stihl

there wont be much different. the regular catalogue we see over here is available to all of europe. they just dont bother importing items and just say "its not available" thats why there was such a backlog of the timbersports merchandise!
  21. no, ive been using my own rope! admittidly not for a few years, but i did get two marlow salamanders.
  22. its ok, your not the only one whos had probs with the isa.
  23. learn the part codes, youl find a 460 can run between 13" - 42" +, its just not ideal to do so as it can strain the engine. stick with the lower end of the reccommended range and it will cut fine and dandy!
  24. NO NO NO NO NO!!! did you even get a cert of conformity? was the prussik loop labelled? i can guess where youve been, and as far as stihl kit goes, yes they are a good place. but dont get climbing gear from them unless you are realy properly clued up on what you are getting. maybe go to a climbing shop in south lincs, or maybe splash out on some exotic stuff at the apf?
  25. agri engineerin is takin tractors et all apart! a good thing to learn but im not patient for that! bein in a workshop all day! id rather be in the woods, doin what arbs do best! have fun!!
