  1. thats why i started this thread littletree, so the organisers will get a full field of competitors for their efforts and raise the profile of the sport!
  2. il be honest chuck, ive neva used the bars, but there are soo many variables as to how good a brand is that its very hard to measure. youl also find most bars are actually made by a few companies and just painted in brand names, the bars are identical! i do have a windsor waterproof coat which if fantastic, so the bars cant be that bad!
  3. DISCLAIMER. It aint my fault if sum muppett gives the wrong info!!
  4. ah, another shameless plug!! speaking of which............any more on a poison ivy? or should i change to a yale bandit?
  5. haha! id just be happy to get involved!! il be honest, the system is a joke. but its the only system thats considered in the industry. employers always ask for nptc's, ive neva landed a job from a two year national diploma! thats why im trying to get into it, to make it a better place for all of us. its no good just siting there and moaning about it! lets be honest, a two day felling course doesnt make a pro, but its a start.
  6. aw bless! no friends yet. well go on then, ya twisted me arm!!

  7. he did the day after on my cs40! the assessor was basicaly asked to assess 4 guys on cs40 and 41 in one day (8 assessments) so the chap turned up the day before and watched me section a sycie, ie 4 branches lowered, top lowered then 4 stem sections lowered, i didnt kno it was him till i got down! i wondered why he was scrutinizin me knots!! so the next day he said i just had to do cs40 as he saw i was confident and knowledgable i do believe that a 5day cs38 course isnt the best. just go back and retest some of your candidates, say 3 weeks later. in my experience they cant remember jack s.... if you need to borrow a dummy, just let me kno, il check me diary......
  8. OK Peeps! WE HAVE COMPS!! Pole climbing 4th-6th june North wales woodfest 24th-27th june Royal highland show Great yorkshire show - date? royal welsh show - date? 18th-19th sept Newbury show email pete galop 4 details [email protected] thanks to LITTLETREE for info
  9. like i said, i did my training at college on an ND course, so i just did the test, ive seen several 38 assessments where the assassor just asks for the easiest senario's, hence sais assessments, iv done pole works at college! ive been registered wiv nptc to be an assessor for 2 yrs and still waiting my technical verifying! would it suprise you to kno i actualy passed my cs41 without actualy knowing i was being assessed?
  10. im just after a reccy climb at the mo rupe, but if some lovely wunderful experienced judges/organiser/seasoned comp climber wants to come along and offer some wise advice then i wont complain. ive organised a few events before so i kno its not for the faint-hearted, if an organisation wants to borrow said trees then they will have to speak to her ladyship.
  11. the fibreglass poles should dismantle down to fit in your box, assumming its a full lenght box. if not, weve got a box welded to the body on one side, so you drop the sidegate and hey presto! theres a box the full lenght of the van, easily long enough for poles, ht's, signs etc. when you lift it back up it just looks like part of the van james bond stylee! from the outside you cant tell its there!
  12. everyone is welcome, but if i have an idea of numbers i can sort out a full weekend. theres plenty of room 4 camping. theres a 130,000 acre private estate to play in!! im about half an hours drive up the A1 from peterborough.
  13. my knowledge of this matter suggests the rescues 1 + 2 were alwaya done as the easiest two, ie rope long enough to decend on, and rope too short to decend on. as the pole rescue was never assessed and very rarely taught, i did hear on said grapevine this was to be a new part of cs41. i did my climbing as part of my ND, and went straight for the test without the lantra training part. my collegues who went on the lantra training par last year were shown a set of spikes but neva actualy used them.
  14. so il put you down as a "maybe" then?
  15. im thinking about having a reccy climb on some trees near me, with a view to making it a regular thing, and also having the possibility of using them for a competition. this probably wont happen til the summer, but id like a good idea of who might be interested, as it can be made into a weekend event if theres enough peeps. anyone who knows said competition standards (size, width, localities) would be verily welcome.
  16. so its going to be a quiet year then?
  17. neva heard of it, although it was only a matter of time! i just give my krabs a squirt of gt85 every now and then
  18. hiya littletree!! im interested in havin a go at poleclimbing this year, every avenue iv looked down has drawn a blank. ie poleclimbing.org is 3 yrs out of date, a chap on here by the nick of peterthepole isnt replying to ansafone messages etc. any info you have would be muchly appreciated, iv started a thread on the competitions page called "dates 2010". thanks.

  19. i tend to use a portawrap if anything. youd be suprised at just how big a piece a 13mm rope will handle. most of my work has always been possible to just cut and drop, or step cut and thrown. iv even used two tape slings a fair few times. i find it builds your confidence more if you just climb out a little bit further and cut it smaller, you wont need a lowering system and it makes it much quicker and easier to clear up later.
  20. just use the rope youve got and see! spiderjacks are ok, but you have to pull the rope through the mechanism wheras on a lockjack it has a removable mechanisn to just slot your rope into.
  21. come on chaps, try telling your (now very pissed off) boss why your putting half a dozen lines into a tree "just in case" instead of getting your butt up there and working. me thinks youl be looking at arbjobs.co.uk in the evening!! a second access line is a good idea, but often overlooked. as its also best practise to have a belay line attatched to your non existent rear anchor point on your non existent fall-arrest harness. i will be honest tho, i probably wouldnt have even made it upto said casualty!
  22. yeah, idealy the saw only comes with the picco micro chain, if your unsure what to get, just get another the same. the only diffs are wether you want the bumper tie links or not! stihl actualy do a cabide tipped version for cutting crap like frozen wood, or stuff thats covered in mud etc, its a pain in the bum to sharpen tho, and its quite expensive so it maybe easier to keep a couple of standard chains to use instead. mastering your sharpening is the best way forward!!
  23. ive got afew stretchair bits wiv mixed results, the fleece is very hot but too nice to get mucky workin. the tee is great but the same as the stihl, and the troosers are ridiculously huge but its company policy to wear them, i certainly wouldnt pay 200 squids 4 them!! the boot bag is the best ive found! i do prefer stihl kit tho (any sales reps reading...) the best waterproof iv ever had was when i worked@fountains, shame i had to give it back when i left. the nearest iv found to it is the windsor, but it has the plastic liner which makes it hotter to wear, still great tho.
  24. im prety sure you can try heel cuttings, but its best to get a realy good (heavy) book.
  25. yeah, basicaly youve just got to try as many different ones as you can. i tend to be quite lucky in that i get decent ones every time, just cus i try them out first. iv heard nowt but good stuff about the treemotion, but i love my treeflex too much to let it go! il look at one when my treeflex needs replacing, but im not in a hurry and there will probably be an even better one on the market by then.
