  1. has anyone had a go with the all-in-one file guides that do the raker and the tooth in one go?
  2. the local assessment centre is supposed to support your application to nptc, such as helping you generaly, signing paperwork, sorting out assessments and giving you future work etc. i first applied over two years ago, and am still waiting for the a.centre to sort things out, i have heard on said grapevine that you dont need a centre, not sure how true tho. there is also a bit of a stall on new assessors at the mo tho, so that probably isnt helping. ive heard several diffrent ways on getting into it, tho im more interested in training so assessing will be more of a sideline for me, its very useful to have as you kno what the reqd standards are. just contact the nptc offices and they willsort you out
  3. ring nptc and talk to them! youl have to fill out the forms and do two observations of assessments. fill out more forms and then get a technical evaluation. fill out more forms and go on a training session fill blah blah.........and organise/carry out some assessments under observation from the technical verifier thats about it in a nutshell, tho im sure sum bighead will say different! you also need the backing of your local assessment centre, altho iv been waiting for mine to sort things out for over two years now! its not a bad thing once your in, youve just got to get in!!
  4. i looked into this a couple of years ago. its more of a theory course with practical elements, i was also told that because its a part-time course its very intense ie they throw a lot at you in a short space of time. its reccomendedyoul need a second day just to read through your notes to let it all sink in. sound good, id luv to do it, iv just got other stuff to worry about so its just not poss.

    lets go fly a kite!

pics of red kites re-introduced to a site about 25-30miles away.
  6. you use your ear to sharpen???!!!! now thats sumthin iv got to see!!!!!!!! personaly i will use the stihl wooden handles cus i also use the correct file guide to go with it. i will also use a husky plastic for the flat file as the file sits further into the handle than a wooden one and doesnt bend so easily. im also very careful to identify the chain correctly and use the correct sized file. youd be suprised at how many people dont know!!
  7. the answer is B - the great wall of china. wot do i win??
  8. there is! i still have one atached to an old retired rope that i use as a work line. but it cant be removed. is the golden nugget removable or is it stuck on? its not a bad bit of kit, theres just a couple of other devices that work exactly the same way, its just a preferance realy.
  9. methinks he means both as practical and theory, not both as two courses! in my experience i have neva landed a job using my ND, employers only seem bothered in nptc's. but then i have worked for some right ol numpties!! a decent employer will be happy to see a college ticket, but youl find it will stand you in better stead for the future, and in your work as youl actualy kno and care about what you do. rather then "cutting it off cus the boss said so!" either course will be fine, just depends what you want, a climbing job or a desk job?
  10. no i dont know why this thread is in this forum either. all i can say is it wasnt me!!
  11. i remember when i was at riseholme, there was a chap from sheffield who drove over everyday! i do believe both riseholme and askham bryan are nearest. im just not sure who does what courses, when it comes to funding tho, i remember that course fees are paid for you on certain ones, if you live in the same county, or if its full/part time etc. just have a play on the websites and see what you get. a college course will stand you in good stead for the future, and will teach you far more than any short course ever will.
  12. although the nptc ticket tends to be more influencail, the rules are you should have a certificate of competance. it dont matter whos name is on it (lantra, nptc, in-house) in the past, the two were seperate courses. nowadays, lantra does a course, nptc does the assessment of that course. with lantra, chaps are trained, then given a certif, this usualy expires after five years, which encourages updates, which can be very handy. as nptc is just an assessment, you either pass or fail, its not hard to pass if youv been using the kit relativly safely, i passed mine easily without anyprobs, and without the lantra training.
  13. the only peeling machine iv seen and used was a few years ago on the estate, they mainly cut the poles at fencepost size. one guy feeds in a pole, it goes throu the blades, comes out the other end and another guy stacks it. gives chips suitable for playground bark. it was a very old machine, it had a crank handle to start it!
  14. WAHEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! TIMBERSPORTS KIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! iv only been hasslin stihl uk fer 3years!! them x-fit troosers look great fer lunging!!
  15. assessors are paid a fair price. but you have to jump throu a lot of hoops to get there, you also have to be self or part employed. you have to pay for your own assessments to get quald in the first place. and youl find the assessment centre actualy gets a cut of it, just for pushin paperwork! at the end, assessors dont actualy get much, once you work it all out. your assessment price should still only be about 120-150 squids at the most tho.
  16. its perfectly acceptable to replace/repair a chain, and to file the cutters down on lesser damaged chains. as long as it gets the chain to a cuttable condition. if you replace a link/cutter, you should file it back to match the rest of the cutters. its best to use the bench mount riveter/breaker. the handheld dont last 2 minutes!
