  1. so what is a CS41 if its not a CERTIFICATE OF COMPETANCE?????????? the nptc system is the easiest, simplest way of bein certified. yet it also seems to be the most abused and most misunderstood. it is not the only system availble but its the only one that is requested by employers/clients etc.
  2. remember.........Bribes and sponsorship.........
  3. if you want to be picky, then yes thats true. the law states you must have a certificate of competance. it doesnt matter what name is on it. the nptc is the preferd system, because its the easiest and cheapest for employers to abide to, however the system still requires you to hold the ticket for the task ie section felling a tree is CS41. and NOT CS39. felling a medium tree is CS32, not CS31 wiv a bigger bar. by law, i am actually covered by my NC and my ND to do far more than the nptc system, but every job interview has insisted on nptc. i have actualy been told in one interview that my ND and NC were irrelevant. needless to say i told him where he could put his job!!!!!! my message is that you either make an effort to do it properly, or go home.
  4. it says "post quick reply" and next to it is "go advanced" you need to click on go advanced, and you'l see a smiley box on the right. you dont have to be an anorak, you just need to kno how to look after your rope. ie date?
  5.:wink:check out the yale poison ivy thread in climbers talk. trust me!!
  6. ok peeps, heres the deal! i want a yale poison ivy hi-viz in a 45meter wiv one eyesplice. the first dealer to get back to me wiv the right price gets the sale. i am also open to bribes, such as free t-shirts, stickers, rope bags. il even begrudginly accept a lockjack if uve got nowt else!!
  7. blimey guys!!! you have to understand that any climbing arborist MUST have CS40 and CS41 to do any aerial tree works!!!!!!! (afag805) any company who takes this industry seriously will expect you to have them!!! it is possible to use the "supervision" exception, ie any person with cs40/41 can supervise an unqualified person with cs38/39, but this means you have to stand there and WATCH. grabbing an armfull of brash and treking it around the corner to the chipper is NOT acceptable. its about time people started to realise its not about the profit!! that is a bye-product of responsable arboriculture, and it should NOT be put first!!!!!!!!
  8. example; the elecy company wants to fell a tree near a line, the landowner says no just trim it, in order to get the required clearance. this end in a poorly shaped tree because the climber can only do as he's told. and before anyone argues, ive spent years doing elecy and rail works. im not happy about some of the work ive done, but all i did was whats required, and i have been given a lot of crap from management for protesting! its no different to any line of work, ie the owner wants "this" doing to his(or her) tree, and it dont matter how much you say its a bad idea, thats what they want. either you do it or someone else will.
  9. hiya! in my experience, railwork is basicaly the same as elecy line clearences. the trees are only cut back to provide minimum clearances for safety reasons against the overhead lines. the standards of the work should still be up to spec, ie target pruning and no spikes. even tho the end result does require some head scratching!! the companies always try to remove all of the trees, but are met with opposition from third parties such as conservationists, neighbouring landowners and people who generaly want the trees to stay, so all the companies can do is to trim back to give a minimum clearance. the trees will mostly survive anyway
  10. the deal is the chinstrap must be a three point, ie two on either side and one on the rear, the rear one can be attatched in two places but is still classed as a three pointer. the side protection was an approved upgrade made a few years later, but has been around long enuff for peeps to upgrade. these helmets are safe 4 five years, ground-style huskys last two years.
  11. hiya steve! ive just put a new thread up as "dates 2010" in the comps section, just wonderd if you can make it a sticky, as i aint got the foggiest!!! cheers!

  12. Hiya page peeps! id like you to post all of your competition dates here for everyone to see. iv had serious problems for years trying to get into comps, and im sure im not the only one! so if anyone is running a comp please let us all know so we can enter in good time. include dates, disiplines, locations, where to get the entryform and anything else that is useful to know. these can be any disipline, such as climbing, felling, poleclimbing, carving etc Thanking you muchly in advance, my entryform is in the post!

    ms 361

the stihl ms361 wiv a 16incher is perfect. its small enough to use all day every day, and its got enough balls to fell trees as bigger than the bars can handle, ive done several boring in cuts and left 3-4in square pegs in the middle! the saw didnt even struggle!! it can take a shed-load of abuse and stil work perfectly (just incase sum oik chooses to borrow it)ive had huskys that cant even manage 13in bar length logs!! the 260's at your college have probably seen better days by the sounds of it
  16. AAAAAAAWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! cutie ikkle doggy-wog!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  17. sit in the snow 4 half an hour, then pull yer pants down!!!!!!!!! sorry, couldnt resist! ya handed it on a plate wiv all the trimmings!!!!!!
  18. ok guys! the deal is youve got your tickets 4 life, its highly reccommended to take a refresher course every 5 years for each ticket, to prove uv not desended into muppetry. it is a hse guidance so when the doggy-doos hits the fan and the hse are called in to investigate they will want to see evidence of refresher training. its basically a paper chase! ive done several, but only wiv big firms who are trying to cover their own a**e, they can blame you when it goes wrong! having said that, ive had three strimmer updates wivout actually doin the main course!!!
  19. yeah i got it bad after my first time in a mewp, i only get it after mewp work but its not as bad as it used to be! great fun tho! its like bein on a boat!
  20. yes there are bigger trees, but its still no harder then the 31, just remember to keep ur cuts level from the start and the rest will easily fall into place. i actually find bigger trees easier to deck than smaller ones!!!! a good instructor is a must, dont go 4 the nearest or cheapest one, ive travelled quite a bit to get my tickets, and im going even further 4 the rest! extra money spent in quality training will save u a fortune in the end. happy felling!!!!!
  21. my crossovers dont crossover!!!! theres always a gap in it!!!!! Hey bob! iv been looking at one of those dymo label makers,is that about e good one? so as long as ive got the rite info, i can do me own labels then?
  22. i have been considering a proper label maker, but it means naff all if u cant put the right info on it in the first place! OOOO-EEERRRR missus!!!! methinks me has started a right ol humdinger here!! and its only me first thread hows things bob? hey old snake! im still havin fun wiv me splicin! cant get the crossover buried for monkeys nuts tho!!!!!
  23. i have no idea! im just trying to do things proper, except iv been told soooo many different stories that maybe i dont no what proper is???????? dont even get me started on conformity certs cus, eye splice certs or even the tuefelberger ce climb kit!!!!!!
  24. anyhoooos, back to the topic!! the reason ropes cant have any old number on the label is cuz of the traceability, ie it needs to be traced back to the maker (the person in the factory) if it has any old number on it you can only trace it to the shop. i do find it very peculier how a dealer can cut and label friction cord, but will cut and not label rope cut from the roll next to it.
