  1. Absolutely spot on. I remember once speaking on the phone to a customer’s insurer, to tell them the price for us to clear a lime which had gone over and taken a garden wall out between them and the neighbour. But it was understood that it was the customer who was going to pay, they just wanted to make sure the insurance company was going to reimburse them before we started. On the other occasions I’ve done insurance jobs, it was never directly for the insurer; always the policy holder.
  2. It’s a very difficult thing to do (in my opinion) run a whole job from in the tree, as the climber and either as the boss / owner or as the foreman for someone else. I have done both, but don’t climb much myself these days and use experienced climbers I know and trust; ultimately they make the decisions on how they want to execute the work in the tree, after we’ve discussed it before they go up. I run the job on the ground. These things generally work themselves out, or not if the climber and the foreman / owner on the ground, each have very different ideas of how to go about things and can’t find a middle ground to make it work.
  3. You're welcome Peasgood. Thank you for such a succinct and really informative post.
  4. Sure, no problem. Although that tree is purely for screening and as a garden feature, they don’t use the apples; hence why it was pruned as an ornamental.
  5. I wondered what books people have read, related to our industry, that they would definitely recommend to others. In terms of how informative; educational; interesting; funny or just helpful that they were. For myself, I would recommend any of these four
  6. It's amazing how well preserved that plaque is, considering its age.
  7. If he’s an arborist, shouldn’t he have figured out which wood is combustible and which isn’t? 🤔
  8. I’ve found this to be pretty good once you’ve got the thick of it up.
  9. That’s terrible. Does the car park have CCTV?
  10. I find it to be a very good saw: it’s light, economical on fuel, very manoeuvrable and easy to handle with lots of power. A climber brought one in on his first day working with me a few years back and I got to use it myself, thought how good it was; then bought one.
  11. I liked the Protos at first, once I got it fitted correctly, the way the ear muffs tuck out of the way when not in use and the visor staying close to the helmet when you push it up are great features; it also feels much more "fitted" when you're wearing it in some way, than other helmets. However I did find the ear muffs popped-off quite regularly once I'd had it for a month or so which rapidly got very old. The worst thing though was the way in which when it rained, the mesh visor became full of water droplets that made it virtually impossible to see through and because the mesh is so fine you couldn't just tap the visor or shake your head to lose them.
  12. Hope this chap went straight to buy a lottery ticket. 😳
  13. If you can find a way via college to get a work placement in the U.S. I would advise you to go for it, the scale of the arb industry over there is of a completely different scale; it means a lot of big companies have really good internal training opportunities. I have worked in a few countries but not the U.S. and when I visited a friend who was employed by Davey Tree over there in the early 2000’s, I regretted not having worked there myself.
