  1. Can anyone recommend a good supplier for cobra bracing kit?
  2. I have removed a lot of dead / dying privet over the past few years, from dead sections to entire hedges. I have seen tiered fungal brackets on some of the stems but it was on long dead sections so I think it is saprophytic and had appeared afterwards.
  3. Is that second photo the finished article?
  4. Old espaliered pear tree - annual tidy up.
  5. This morning's job - wrapping a willow near a lake in gold material.
  6. A farm not far away from me had 2 German Shepherds, someone came and nicked some diesel and killed the pair of them. These were big, aggressive dogs too.
  7. Cheers for that info. just what we need. Thanks alot for taking the time Dean, J.F.
  8. We are having some security issues at the yard. Does anyone have any recommendations for good telescopic security posts and decent suppliers of same. Thanks.
  9. It's time to renew my Yellow Pages ad and in addition, they offered me a Mediumweight (whatever that is?) ad in the tree work classification on Yell.com for £340 + VAT for 12 months. Are other people paying about the same for a similar ad?
  10. Ivy covered sycamore removal.
  11. I'm not sure I can see the direct analogy here. But anyway, I wouldn't drive a vehicle without insurance, regardless of whether the brake fluid was topped up or not.
  12. We recently carried out some minor work (crown clean & lift) to a large beech which has some old school steel cables in it. We inspected them and there were no apparent problems. But it occurred to me, that if there had been and the customer had wanted them replacing. Would I need to get extra insurance for the bracing I put in the tree? As if a tree requires bracing then effectively you are acknowledging that it has a structural defect. I am curious what my position would be, if say that after putting bracing in a tree, eg Cobra, there was a major failing of a limb and someone/thing was injured/damaged would I need to have additional public liability insurance to cover that potential liability? I have put cable bracing and storm anchors in trees in the past, in England; Germany & Sweden so I am familiar with it, but only for firms I was working for, never on my own account. I'd be grateful if someone could shed some light on this.
  13. Some great pictures there.
  14. I think that the main things which will affect the arb industry in the future will be: The increasing number of people coming out of the colleges and seeking to work in an industry which doesn't have the capacity to absorb them. The number of new firms setting up which goes up every year which will make it more competitive and harder to make a living. I can see insurance getting more and more expensive and harder to get. I think there will be a lot more H & S legislation and regulation which impacts on our industry and will there will be alot more hoops to jump through in order to operate by the book in this industry. I would love to be able to say I think it will get better, but unfortunately I'd be kidding myself. I think it will become more difficult to make a living running an arb business over the next 10 years. Competion, Regulation & Insurance.
  15. Neat, tidy reductions. It's a headache sometimes trying to explain to the customer how difficult it is to make a silk purse from a sow's ear.
  16. How old does new climbing / rigging kit have to be before you need to begin having it LOLER checked? Is it after the first 12 months?
  17. You can't beat it on some jobs when the logs & chip stay there. Nice one.
  18. A Blake's hitch and a double bowline for the end-line knot on the climbing line. A side strop with a rope snap on the end, a gri-gri attached to the side D on the harness via a pear shaped MR.
  19. Could possibly be lightning damage.
  20. I would like to apologize to you for how I responded to your post yesterday, it was unacceptable and I'm sorry. I misinterpreted the point you were making and unfortunately I took it to mean something which really revs me up. You don't need to apologize, I went in at the deep end not you. I hope you can accept mine. If you are ever in this area again Dean and have time, give me a ring. I'll PM my mobile. Jon F.
  21. I'll just try and avoid your posts in future. Life's too short for this. Post whatever unclear doubletalk you like.
