  1. Small horse chestnut reduce & re-shape.
  2. When you say from Feb to now, do you mean Feb '09 to now?
  3. Thanks for that. I charge as much as I can get for the work we do, but that isn't as much as I was able to 12-18 months ago, in this area. A bloke rang me late morning today, left a message asking me to get in touch regarding an apple tree he wanted pruning. I rang this evening when I got home around 6.30. His response - "Oh, someones's been out and done it already".
  4. I thought that was the beauty of a MEWP: you are standing on fresh air.
  5. Because as a general rule it's more dangerous dismantling dead trees than live ones.
  6. I'm not so sure about that working for everyone. Over the past 12 months as the recession has worsened I have had to reduce my prices otherwise I would have had no work. I know this because I have contacted people I have sent quotes to and they told me they got a cheaper price - end of. To most customers a half decent job at half the price of someone who is going to seriously impress them, is good enough. Also, if I get someone in to do a job: plumbing; electrician whatever and they do a good job which I'm happy with. I pay them straight off and will use them again. I don't expect them to start sending me letters or e-mails and it wouldn't influence me to use them again. But maybe that's because I'm in business myself. If it works for you though, and it sounds like it is, keep it rolling.
  7. Nice job. You wouldn't want to be having to climb it!
  8. They rang me this morning to say the osprey died last night. They had put it in this intensive care thing they have and had been force feeding into its crop It had rallied a bit yesterday afternoon. It was a juvenile male, 1 year old born in the U.K. ringed in the nest as a young bird. The wing was dead, so he would never have flown again. They are going to X-ray the carcass to see if there is any lead shot. The chap I spoke to said it was either shot or attacked by a peregrine as there are a lot in that area and they see ospreys and buzzards as prey.
  9. Husky.
  10. You kicked yourself up the arse by offering it for free in the first place. You should have started off with the charity donation scheme or just sold it by the bag, bulk bag, bucket or load.
  11. The economy is in a right state at the moment. There is alot of uncertainty in peoples' minds. There has just been a budget, there's going to be an election and whoever wins, will then have another budget. There are lots of rumours in the press eg VAT going on food at 3% or the VAT rate going up to 20%, fuel duty increases etc etc. All these things make people alot more careful how they spend their money and alot keener at getting the best price they can. It's just something we've got to ride out. It isn't just our game though I know lads who are plumbers; landscapers; run pubs etc and they are all in the same boat.
  12. Quecus alnifolia is the Golden Oak of Cypress. Quercus robur 'Concordia' is the Golden Oak.
  13. I rang the Falconry Centre and was told that it had eaten something and they'd given it an injection of anti-biotics. They said the wing couldn't be saved. The vet will have a look tomorrow and the people who are responsible for them in the area we found it as well. They said it had most likely been shot. I asked them to ring me to let me know what they decide to do.
  14. I'm going to ring tomorrow to see how it is doing. At least its got a better chance there than on that moorside. It was weak when we picked it up, so it must have been there a while. I doubt it would have let me near it if it had any strength left, never mind carry it in the crook of my arm so far, then put it in a car.
  15. My wife and I were walking near Carperby in Wensleydale today and found a bird of prey with a damaged wing near some old lead workings. We didn't know what it was, not a buzzard or peregrine. I carried it wrapped in my fleece and walked the 1 1/2 miles back to the car. Then we drove 16 miles to Thorp Perrow Arboretum near Bedale, where there is a Falconry Centre. The owner got one of the falconry staff to come from home, as it was 7.30pm by now, he identified it - an osprey! It had a Natural History Museum London tag on one of its legs. The falconer said they get lots of people bringing buzzards and other birds but not ospreys. They took our contact details, I hope it survives as they migrate from Africa. I don't know what damaged its wing. Maybe some FlaminG Character shot it:thumbdown: It was pure chance we found it, as we had gone to look at these old mine workings a few hundred yards from the footpath.

  17. Nice job and some cracking firewood.
  18. Thats one of the lads I work with. He's a very good climber and will only ask now and again where a branch needs to be drawn back to.
  19. Small beech to reduce & re-shape.
  20. Spear & Jackson
  21. No minimum speed limit on A or B roads, 25mph on the M way. On the M way - over 75 tonnes or 9'6'' wide or 55' long you need an escort. Then the more weight over that you carry the more people you have to notify. Eg over 150 tonnes you have to inform water, electric and gas that you are carrying that amount of weight.
  22. Those are superb John.
  23. A few shots of winter, now that spring is here. Has anyone else got some.
  24. I once worked for a bloke called Bruce Noble, one of the top eye surgeons in the north of England. We were reducing this huge ash which was overhanging his tennis court. It all had to be lowered and was quite awkward as there were other obstacles apart from the court and the fencing around it. He was watching what we were doing and when he brought a brew out he said "That's a highly skilled job you do." I said "Well not compared to yours, if you do something wrong you could blind or kill someone". He replied "Yes, but if the climber does something wrong, he could kill one of you on the ground". It really made me think, that for someone right at the top of what must be one of the most difficult specializations in one of the most difficult jobs - to think tree surgery is highly skilled, that says something about what we do.
