  1. I think I'll stick to Husky, I'm not big into artificial markets.
  2. Did you receive the 2nd PM I sent you?

  3. I need some new pole hedge trimmers and found them at a good price online from this dealer in Devon. I rang up to place an order, the lad asked me where I was calling from. I told him and he said that Stihl had told them that they weren't to sell their products and post them out to customers. That you were to go on to the Stihl website, find what you want and look up the location of your local dealer and go and buy it from them. I was really amazed by this, and couldn't quite believe what I was hearing. He said they could send out any other manufacturers products but not Stihl. I am interested if anyone else has had experience of this.
  4. That is a good idea. I hadn't considered that, it could then be taken down inside the aviary to true ground level. Thanks for that.
  5. If you were going to be 'strapped in' as you call it, I assume from that you mean stropped around the stem, why would you want to be on a springboard? You might as well be on spikes. Also when I say aviary, I'm not talking about some oversized budgies cage Uncle Albert keeps his finches in out the back. This is a very large, permanent structure: easily damaged and expensive to repair.
  6. Are you being serious?
  7. I haven't been asked to quote for it yet, so this is all academic. I just wanted some feedback on this as a method, as I suspect the tree may have to come down at some point. But it would be a difficult and time consuming job however it came down.
  8. I haven't seen that vid. But there are no other trees nearby to put the Hobbs on and because the roof of the aviary has been built around the stem, you couldn't put the Hobbs on the base of the sweet chestnut as the lowering rope wouldn't fit through the mesh roof of the aviary.
  9. It is an existing customer so that is'nt really an option.
  10. The tree is a large sweet chestnut (>80') growing in a very restrictive position. There is no access for a crane or a platform. It is located within a large aviary with no trees of a similar size close enough to it to be used for a separate lowering point. The crown could be rigged normally, but the lower 25-30' of the stem could not. There are a large number of obstructions within the working area: fences, footpaths, huts and other small buildings.
  11. I was wondering if anyone has had any experience of the removal of the stem of a tree using scaffolding, put up around the trunk of the tree to enable it to be sectioned down. I am not even sure its something a scaffolding firm would be prepared to do, due to insurance & potential liability etc. I am interested if someone has had occasion to use this as a method of removing the stem or has looked into the logistics of doing so with a scaffolder, and what the result was.
  12. Golf balls go well too.
  13. Does any one know the manufacturer and part number for the drive belts on the A328?
  14. Does anyone know the make and number for the drive belts for the A328?
  15. I went on a tour of the Stihl factory some years back. They had a small museum on site, with a number of their old saws in it, from the very first ones they produced up to the latest models. You could pick them up off the shelves, the weight of some of them was unbelivable.
  16. I hope your not suggesting there are plant and machinery thieves on arbtalk. Its just good, honest arb workers isn't it?
  17. Is it true that if you reverse the polarity on the battery, then run a strip of weld on the machine it blows the tracker?
  18. The Pruning of Trees, Shrubs and Conifers by George E. Brown. Its not and ident book and some of it is old school, but there is some good information about different species and pruning times. Also RHS Pruning & Training by Christopher Brickell & David Joyce is quite good, but it isn't an ident book as well.
  19. A friend of mine who is a consultant said the minimum you should have is the RFS Dip. Arb. He told me he was once in court once as an expert witness and the other party in the case had an expert witness as well. However this person didn't have any paper qualifications but he did have a lot of experience. When the opposing barrister asked him any questions he began them all by saying "In your unqualified opinion..." Talk about being shot down in flames!
  20. The John Deere stand and demo area at the last APF was one of the best. I hope they push the boat out again this time round.
  21. I was doing my NCH there when that happened. He was on the 10 week course. He snatched the top out of a pine I believe and the stem failed below his feet, presumably due to the shock load. It made everyone who was at MW at the time take a moment to think. As we all used the same work sites and climbed the same trees, ND, NCH and 10 Weekers. James Boyd said there was no outward sign of any defect in the tree when they took it down for the H&SE to inspect it, so it could have been anyone of us.
  22. Did you work for Tradmastarna in around '97?

  23. This country went bonkers some time ago and it wont be getting better any time soon. I'm sorry you had your kit lifted, Its the worst feeling of impotent rage when you find your stuffs been had away.
  24. I knew a builder who kept an alsatian in his lock up. A thief broke in through a sky light and as he was lowering himself down the dog jumped up and bit his legs and tore his trousers. The builder ended up having to pay compensation to him for the injuries and the torn clothing. Unbelivable.
  25. So who is the manufacturer?
