  1. Have you read much about that part of the war, Matty? It's a fascinating tale with some serious treachery and intrigue as well as outstanding courage. Sounds like he was quite a bloke.
  2. 161 Squadron was a Special Duties squadron and flew a variety of aircraft; Lockheed Hudson, Westland Lysander, Handley Page Halifax, Douglas Havoc, Shorts Stirling, Armstrong Whitworth Whitley.
  3. The plane in the pic is certainly no Lysander but I suspect your relative would have dropped weapons and/or agents to the Maquis using something like Halifaxes or Stirlings. You are right to be proud. As Egg rightly said, anybody who had relatives that played a part in defeating the Axis powers has a reason to be proud. The Tempsford Airfield Pages is a good place to start
  4. I have a nagging memory that RAF Tempsford was a bit hush hush and connected with SOE. IIRC, they used to fly Lysanders out of part of it.
  5. Paternal grandfather was Territorial RASC(got called up during the family summer holiday at Margate in August 1939), got out of France a couple of days before Operation Dynamo then was delivering ammo to AA sites all around the country until he was posted to the RWAFF (Royal West African Frontier Force) in Nigeria where he trained truck drivers for the Burma front. Maternal grandfather did a short stint on minesweepers(HMS Speedwell) towards the end of the European war including a stint during the D-Day invasion. I also had one uncle in the RN in the Far East and another in the Royal Marines doing dock clearance in Europe.
  6. 2nd January.
  7. Blimey, mate, I think you need to get over for dinner as soon as possible.
  8. I always had you down as more of a 'Lola' man, mate.
  9. Having both sets of parents over for the day as a thank you for all their help with decorating our new home, and finding out from my Mum that my brother's partner's chemo seems to be working well.
  10. We will be using a specialist firm to do the work so that will be their problem, I'm glad to say.
  11. Perhaps not for kids then.
  12. Only if you don't want to sleep on the bed.
  13. My point is that when given the job of surveying the site, the surveyor (knowing that the survey is being done for development purposes) should take into account any trees which could be easily foreseen as encroaching on the survey site, whether above or below ground, as they would be likely to be affected by the works on site.
  14. No animals allowed on the bed in our home. We have an 8kg cat with an indoor litter tray so don't want him on the duvet after he has been in there.
  15. But it is reasonably foreseeable that the roots would encroach on the development site itself, surely?
  16. This will go on for as long as there are 3 factors present; 1) A group of people who view theft as a preferable option to honest work. 2) A supply of kit available to steal and a ready market to move it on. 3) Insufficient deterrents in place to make living by dishonest means a viable choice. I don't pretend to know the answers but how to alter one or all of the above is definitely the question.
  17. Hope you got the sizes right or you will be in trouble.
  18. Always happy to help out fellow ArbTalkers (and myself, of course ) who need to tip decent chip(leaf in it is fine but no rubbish please) or a bit of log anywhere near the Ingatestone/Brentwood area of Essex or,with a bit of warning, near Maldon in Essex. PM me or call on 07739 556764
  19. I'm looking at options for relining at 50m x 28m pond and one of the ideas raised is a geosynthetic clay liner such as Bentomat or Bentotex. I've only had experience of natural clay liners (puddling) and Butyl so I was wondering if anybody on here had any experiences, good or bad, with this type of material. The main reasoning for considering it is that the pond is on the side of a steep slope and fed only by groundwater which means that it is subject to fluctuation in the level which would lead to a clay lining drying out and cracking, leading to leaks. As I understand it, a geosynthetic clay liner can dry out and rehydrate repeatedly with no ill effects, as well as being self-sealing in the event of being perforated. Thanks in advance for any information.
  20. Paul Smith might be able to help when he sees this.
  21. Not very Arb, but myself and my better half have treated ourself to a new house.
  22. You're just jealous that he kept his MEWP upright.
  23. Name and number for the guvnor.
  24. With an illegally held fire arm, compounded by the fact he had publicly declared his intention to do the very thing. Rather difficult to not find premeditation in all that.
