  1. True I guess there is some logic in if you cant handle the £500 fee and checks should you be driving around in truck over 3500kg.
  2. One reason for pulling out of europe would be to create our own rules not saying it would be a good move but some things would be more sensible. By keeping small businesses under 3500kg means anything weighing over 1400kg needs to be transported on a vehicle with operators licence unless you put it on a plant trailer then you have tacho laws and fuel equivalent to a lorry any way.
  3. The large haulage outfits belong to associations that lobby parliment and look after their interests.
  4. Trouble is with the o licence is if you are going to get a 4600kg gross truck you may as well get a 7.5 tonne. If you are going to the hassle of O licence you may as well get the hgv and buy a lorry with decent payload that costs less to buy than a 7.5 tonner and breaks less often because its made better and so it keeps going. The small business wants slightly larger safer trucks, I dont think vosa would object as it would improve safety. Why do we not have them is fat cats in the haulage industry are afraid it would dent their profits.
  5. I have both old design TT105 and a tt85 the 105 I feel is a much better trailer but for delivering logs you need the smaller one to stand a chance of getting up drives.
  6. 3500kg gross is just not enough for people in this line of work. Its a shame they cant relax the rules and allow 4600kg without op licence. I know people would still be overloaded but I think the roads would be safer as most would be on the limit with some form of braking.
  7. 700 kg sounds good I expected less especially if you had 4 passengers like me I always assume 1/2 tonne of sand is pushing it. When you have the truck a year or two you find it stuffed with all those cant do with out nick nacks
  8. I can understand your passion and anger but its a bit of a heavy subject for an arb forum. If you feel that strongly and understand what needs to be done maybe you need to join a peace keeping force and help put the problems right. There is a lot of unjust things going on in the world at the moment. Last thing I want to do is start another argument.
  9. I found sycamore the worst for stinging the eyes. Then you rub them and push the pollen in as well.

  11. I worked for a very low ranking expendable part of the British Army I think they called us contractors. will see more chopsticks and less mc Donalds soon then.
  12. I auction every thing. I get twice as much for each generator without putting my name or warranty on it. I have put junk in with £600 reserve and it sold for £3000 . Auction no come backs, buyer beware, auctions are full of old tight wealthy bargain hunters on very good pensions with too much time on there hands.
  13. It was me Avon Tyres were famous a few years ago for going out of shape cooper are owned by Avon. I have not heard so much about the problem recently so they may of sorted it. I think Michelin probably still have the best quality although dont always get it right. BFG are owned by Michelin. I put a pair of heavy tyres (BFG AT) on my d22 years ago and it ruined the handling. Something to look at is the weight of these high load tough tyres. Most of these pickups are fairly light and not much heavier than a Mondeo the wheel and tyre is un sprung weight. The Bridgestones that came with the vehicle were the best for on road use. If you dont need off road grip and heavy side walls go for something milder.
  14. Pirelli Scorpion one year old half worn, out of shape. Skipped I think quality of tyres is on the way down.
  15. I think most of the dodge trucks we made had large tool store and tipper on the back all went to the SEB. 22 mpg is good been running a 60 plate D4 since christmas and that has averaged 21 mpg
  16. I can remember working on these trucks when new in the mid 80's. I was a 16 year old apprentice and let loose with a petrol disc cutter to shorten the rear chassis by 4ft. I must have re wired over 100 sets of rear lights. I think they were the dodge 50 with 2 wheel drive but we had a few 4x4 ones over the years. Unfortunately Locomotors went bust in the 90's. There is still a good pool of knowledge around Andover as JJ conversions and Andover trailers sucked up alot of the engineers. I liked the torqey engine and positive gearbox on the dodge and spent hours driving them around our large yard but never actually drove one on the road that I can remember. The pics on here look superb and I am sure they make great Arb trucks. I completely agree I would rather push the boundrys legally than than be over weight. I hope I have not derailed your thread too much. Hope to see some of these trucks.
  17. Verdo are a mile up the road from me and people buy a tipper full of rejects cheap. I dont bother it just about burns with out heat. I like the hotmax better but best is beech.
  18. I look forward to your progress I am about to start building one but only 9ft high. Would be interested in what fixings you are using and joint methods.
  19. When we had a processor it was easier to remove chain than climb round with a file. I used to grind hard to case harden the tips to last longer as we would always use a grinder. Electric grinders are almost a must for processors as the bar is held firm and cant cut bananas like a chain saw so teeth need to be even.

  21. I was out in the amazon lunch time had a 10 plate cabstar behind I was not canning it but making progress and he was right behind me for about 4 miles.
  22. reviews, meetings are an opportunity to sell you some ppi or similar. Once you have a crap endowment or pension round your neck you look at banks in a whole different light.
  23. I noticed our hilux getting worse in 2 wheel drive spinning a wheel even when not towing. I worked out the shoes were dragging. There is a lever on the back plate in the hilux which seizes and ratchets the shoes on but does not allow them to release eventually the shoes just wear out. Worth stripping and maintaining especially if you are not going 4x4 now.
  24. I know the manager of a Tesco extra who worked his way up from the bottom in not much time. 100k a year plus bonus could be worth you making a side ways move in retail. Could be better than beating your knucles off in the rain for £10 an hour.
  25. Standbys get changed due to liquidation. Suddenly undersize for load, application so critical cant trust a 15 year old set. A canopied modernish 100kva should weigh under 2000kg so could put on plant trailer behind 4x4. That 200kva rolls in the auction pic will probably weigh 4-5 tonnes. I collected a 70kva open Dorman once and it was too heavy to tow. Hire sets are a lucky dip and you never know how many hours they have done the clocks often pack up after a few thousand hours so could be on its 5 th clock.
