  1. If a 70 year old is prepared to risk his neck to save a few quid you can be sure they were still looking for cheap after they accepted your quote. Do you actually know they paid more ? Well done for sticking to your price
  2. I was talking about the rexton I forgot they did other 4x4 models. I looked at a new rexton van about 7 years ago no miles but pre registered at about 8 k I don't think they were that popular and not great to drive. The Dacia duster does not look that great either I think you get what you pay for.
  3. I normally get a massimo from Starbucks or Costa for a bucket with four shots of coffee about £3 spend the whole journey with a big smile on my face licking the window. Work like a Duracell bunny and can't sleep for two days. That looks cheap compared with South west trains.
  4. I would go and give one a drive I have a feeling they may be hard to live with. Looks good on paper merc engine tows 3500kg but crude compared to modern stuff.
  5. The hilux is ok but I think the vw trumps it especially with 8 speed box it's an almost seamless non revvy change. Good road manners and quiet with quality interior. The best I have driven not to say there is no better but I would think it would take some beating.
  6. But they are all on a level playing field just knock 20 % off and you have a good idea. The emission controls eat a bit more fuel. These trucks have grown in size over the last ten years and the tyres doubled in width and halved in life. If you want to improve fuel consumption improve your driving style check the truck is not chipped for performance. Look into skinny pure road tyres with good reviews for economy I think this could make a difference of 20 % over mts . Forget the fancy fuels and make sure it's serviced early and the brakes are not binding. Don't drive round with the climate control on auto you only need air con for three days a year. Unless the air con says it's off its actually always working. Seat heaters heated mirrors etc leave them off. The power drawn by the alternator is the same as a 50 cc moped through the chain.
  7. Yes so they won't be busting to discount it. I once leased an old hilux for three months while I had the wonderful new navarra d22 on order. Lesson learnt should have stuck with the old hilux which was worth about 5 k and had 170 k on the clock.
  8. If I did arb work I would probably buy a 3 year old white hilux ex company 70,000 miles full history £7000. Why would you pay 40 k for a pick up and throw sticks at it all day and drag chainsaws over it. If I needed a vehicle for private use I buy a proper 4x4. Then you don't have to Neal up on the rear tail gate getting covered in crap to retrieve your coat that is wet from the leaking snug top. The rear seats in a dc are ok but you won't want to do 200 miles in there. Normally they are noisier and have a hard choppy ride.
  9. I test drove one about two weeks ago. Thought it the best drive so far but not tried the ranger not a fan of ford at all so it would need to be head and shoulders above the rest. Not sure I would buy the vw with 2 litre engine especially if towing big trailers. 7 speed auto box was spot on and may take the strain off the engine. All a bit too nice for a working truck and maybe not tough enough and price is horrendous for a high spec one you are looking at 30 k plus and then vat on top.
  10. My 10 plate disco four said 36 mpg on the dash and I was chuffed until I worked out the true tank mileage was 23. The best you could get from it on a run with light foot was 29. Vehicle have more power now but the mpg has not really improved from 20 years ago.
  11. Must have been something wrong with it a twin turbo set up with variable vane vs a big old td5 turbo should be no contest. I doubt I could buy a new double cab that I was un happy with the performance even the 2.5 hilux pulls like a train just need the 3.0 for big trailers. Too much power and they scoff diesel and the back end swings about. I think you may be better with a souped up rav 4 they used to do a boy racer one. After a few weeks when the leaf springs have sat down and hardened up the dc will grate on you. I know I had a new one.
  12. It's all designed so you are hooked in on a 19 k double cab with black bumpers. Then when you are there you want few extras but it's cheaper to go the next model up especially as it has the bigger engine before you know they shove a quote under your nose for 28k + vat which has a good chunk of profit in it. Double cab for 19 k is a lot of truck for the money with little profit. 9 k is lots of money for a few bits of tackey bling.
  13. I have a 4 year old Vito and love the driving position and the lower height means we can get in all multi stories we service Gensets in. In some ways the vw is better finished but they have had plenty of engine and gearbox problems. The merc bodies are now better protected against rust our last one failed it's mot on rust at 5 years old. The engines are in my experience bullet proof. Gearboxes are a bit knotchy but if that bothers you go for an auto.
  14. The 3 litre hilux is capable of towing over 3 tonne and there is a company in the Midlands that replates them to show it. There is no ideal vehicle out there so far this has been a useful thread so let's not turn it into my winky is bigger than yours. We are all looking for a similar vehicle but all going round in circles may be its about to hit the market but not yet. I think the hilux is probably the best all rounder but the towing weight puts it out the race.
  15. I have one they stopped making them in 2009. They last a good 20 years unlike the rest of the crap. They make a new proper landcruiser v8 and yes it's 60k. If you want a tipper you need one of the things just above.
  16. I have done similar things in the past for free but only the once . After I learnt my lesson I broke it down to profit. I would rather pay £2000 for an arctic load of easy to process beech or ash than a load of twisted oak which seems to take forever to season. Once you spend days cutting that lot up and hauling it home you could of logged the Arctic load and banked the money. It seems strange cord is in short supply when we have had such a mild winter ?
  17. It could be that most people's first experience of a defender is the 200,000 mile ex utility wreck which stays with them for years. A new jap motor changed every 3 years is unlikely to give much grief but if you use it hard it will cost you when you blow a gear box or bend a prop. Personally at 6 ft 3 I would not want to go far in a defender. For towing you really can't beat an Amazon it has the weight the stability and the cc's and will do 250 k before it gives a major component problem.
  18. Yes all pick ups are commercial. My land cruiser is a 7 seat car and they don't do a commercial. The disco 4 was a commercial but I won't be going their again.
  19. I did a 15 mile ride along Bournmouth sea front on cycle paths which are shared with pedestrians. Normally walking 6 abreast if you give them a ping with the bell they get abusive so it's easier to just leave a tyre mark up their back. There is a big pushin this country to get people out of cars and on to bikes but it's difficult if people can't share there is a reason the pavements have been widened and it's not just because the population has got fatter. It would not surprise me if the little girl was on a cycle path. I notice my neighbours are braver In in there xc90's when I am cycling than they are when I drive the battered 15 year old landcrusiers at them.
  20. Thank you makes a change for me For serious towing it's really Land Rover or land cruiser Amazon. But the amazon eats fuel and is poor for tax depreciation only allowed 8 % of value against tax per year due to the high emmissions. Commercials are 100% tax deductible and £230 a year road tax.
  21. It's a difficult one as everyone has different priorities. I would avoid Nissan because I had one and the dealers round our way we're dreadful. They have had loads of grief with the engines for over 10 years. But it was a good drive and I loved the gearbox. I drove the amorok and felt it stood head and shoulders above the rest but only 2.0 litre engine and the truck may not be tough enough especially with no low box. The price is horrendous and so is the waiting list. The dmax I thought drove crude a bit like a 15 year old l200 but it does tow 3500kg Hilux nice to drive but dated, noisey engine, poor towing weight and expensive to buy will be reliable though with good resale. I learnt years ago to stay well clear of French stuff. I don't think the new kids on the block will grasp the towing thing straight off so expect clutch and drive train problems.
  22. I am looking for the same steve but have only managed the time to drive 3 to be honest motors interest me less with every passing year. I can give you my opinion but we are all different and want different things.
  23. I have a metal one identical to the Oregon one always found it very useful saves bending down to drag rings about. I am not sure I would get on well with a heavy wooden one especially if I missed the wood and it was heading for a shin.
  24. I have the 3 ph sheppach splitter and the performance was superb 1 phase machine would be like comparing a moped with a Impreza. I converted mine to run on an 11 hp Honda and it now has no where near the power but at least we can use it in the woods. Ours is 7 years old and never put a spanner to it just plenty of grease.
