  1. I would forget the snow tunnel and just order for £6 I think all td5 starters are the same but dont quote me on that. Its harder to get the motor off than change the contacts. Good luck Armchairarborist I think you killed that starter motor you landrover owner you
  2. The true test of a good customer is if she phones in July. I am out of logs now but who knows I could move our teleporter in January and find the odd 100 tonnes.
  3. I saw it and thought ideal for our teleporter but did not want to cause micheal c grief. When things settle down put me tenth on the list of interested. I am low on the list as I have had my share of keenly priced toys from other honest members in the last few months
  4. I own a 4x4 hilux tipper it goes every where in 2 wd empty or loaded with 750kg of logs. The only thing that stops my steady progress is muppets in 2wd cars or lorries. Stephen Blair is right I would think twice about taking my kids 4 miles in this let alone to france even if it is a four wheel drive. For the last ten years I have had a problem with flying for pleasure I often fly for business but why for pleasure would you allow a corporation to treat you like brainless sheep and take away your self respect ???
  5. I think your right. The people on this thread talking the prices down and quoteing kws either dont have any logs left or dont do wood at all. The rest are busy getting "a load" out or a cubic metre or a trailer load or a tonne all of which the customer will be delighted with in this weather.
  6. Before anybody fits another new starter. Just buy the kit for £6 the starters last for ever but the contacts in the solinoid wear in no time. The hardest part of the job is getting the starter off. A new starter in a couple of years will be doing the same thing. Before anybody starts praising the jap crap just remember its a japanese starter motor and fitted to alot of vehicles all doing the same thing
  7. Forget the above the 200 is a totally different set up. You have a v belt rather than the serpentine belt on a 300 also your water pump is lower down in a different place. Check to see if the coolant is comming from water pump as someone pointed out when it warms up it could seal itself.
  8. Its none of the above. the starters are almost water proof ( for wadeing ) The Td5 starter contacts fail prematurely. Very common fault you probably all need the kit on ebay for £6 . I did mine recently easy fix but one of the bolts is an absolute pig. I did mine in situ without removing the starter.
  9. If its a 300 tdi and its near the front of the engine towards the offside its either the water pump or 'P' gasket behind it. A clue to the water pump going is the drive belt goes out of line and makes more noise.
  10. This happened last year in January. The oil companies have just enough lorries and drivers to cope with demand. As soon as snow keeps the trucks off the road for a few days they are unable to catch back up due to driver hours etc. Lets face it not really in there interest to be on top of the job ,oil shortage higher prices more profit less work.
  11. The old dears who are in need get £250 winter fuel allowance and currently an extra £25 every time the temp drops for a few days. The reason the working classes in this country pay so much tax is to pay for the welfare state. When your heating oil runs out and you need an emergency top up 200 litres fort £400 the state wont help you out neither will the old dears.
  12. Varta bosch or hella you get what you pay for. Some budget batteries are excellent most are rubbish first frost and no guts in them. Check its not a fault with solinoid in starter motor common weak point on TD5 you can get a repair kit on ebay for £6. Check the battery connections in side not just the top of the post.
  13. Jonathon latham is selling them in sussex
  14. We use beech which comes from 4 miles away. Six years ago it would have gone for pulp in wales to make paper but when they shut that down there was no use for it. The firewood industry proved an ideal and only market for it. As for making things like table and chairs in this country now you are having a laugh. The reason cord wood has gone sky high is simply demand. If you are going to supply firewood as a commercial venture your not going to turn roots and crowns into logs and make a living, pocket money before christmas maybe.
  15. Your going to need some big nets to get that in.
  16. Its good to hear someone getting a good and fully justified price for their hard work. Do you deliver tipped loads for this or nets and bulk bags. I value the cost of delivery especially when vehicles cost 20k and diesel £1.30 a litre. We offer free delivery because if we charge delivery the customer will have to pay20% vat on it. But there is only so far you can deliver logs free. Problem is I have now is every year I double the amount of cord I buy but if the cost goes up that much how confident will i be customers will buy it and will we have a cold winter next year. With a mild winter next year I can see alot of people catching a cold.
  17. But this was not written when oil prices were high and in short supply. Was there 12" of snow on the ground. Do you sell logs or are you just a consumer you seem to have a vested interested in lowering the price and profit in the market place.
  18. You could have a point but I dont know anyone selling for £120 a cube. Most sell between £60-£80 . A tonne turns into 1.5 cu loose. Selling for £120 for 1.5 cu metres how much are you going to make after you fuel costs wear and tear and 3 hrs graft inc del time if the wood cost u £75 . Shag all.
  19. I am not a big fan of bagging logs but have done a few lately by charging premium price I think they work ok as long as you dont try and wholesale and charge just under the B&Q price. But according to another thread I am a charleton.
  20. I have a fuelwood one does look alot of money until you work out the cost of materials and time to make one especially with my welding skills. Swallow hard and write the cheque with your eyes closed and get bagging them logs before its too late:thumbup:
  21. Dont sell it in mid shropshire as it will need to be £45 to compete with 101b
  22. I have some freshly cut beech safety logs which wont get the stove hot but for health and safety reasons they are twice the price of seasoned. On the positive side you could use the paper work to light your next proper fire.
  23. It would make no difference if it was 30p a litre you have not had it delivered yet. i would have a back up plan let us know if you get some on the 5th. Last January customers told me they were paying £400 to have an emergency top up of 200 litres. Even customers on a top up plan were hung out to dry.
  24. I dont care about btu's. Logs to me are a top end luxury purchase not a cheap form of heating. If I wanted to provide fuel on a small margin I would buy a tanker and deliver kero. Logs has to be one of the most difficult fuels to offer. The hidden costs of processing obviously put paid to large companies cashing in ( ie not enough profit in it ) Logs are an accessory that enables people to enjoy a past time ie wood burning. You get the visual effect of logs burning, the advantage of not being sat in stale air from central heating. Logs will heat your house and you are being green at the same time. Today I have a letter telling me cord wood has gone up 20% . No problem but if customers stop buying wood so will I. There is no way I am absorbing that in to my costs And now think I will be pushing towards £100 a cube.
  25. hyd oil comes in several grades I have 32 and 47 32 is thinner and gets used when we have no leaks and the 47 goes in most of our kit
