  1. Haha cheers Ed... Im on it! Shout me up next time your up north.
  2. True craftsmanship right there...I understand if you dont want to say but how much would something like that cost? Do you do much work like that? Top drawer that!
  3. Top find... I love looking at old pics like that.
  4. With you to a certain extent there. The poles have expanded and retreated several times in the last 100k years without our help due to ( like you said ) increased volcanic or geothermal activity producing more green house gases. But I dont think that our contribution of Co2 and other warming gases such as methane, sulphur etc will help the situation... I think the next 10-20 years will show us if we are on the brink of a major climate change. Exciting stuff!
  5. Stephen is right, soak it all up, remember everything you did today and use it next time you come to a similar situation. Felling, in my opinion is 20% knowledge and 80% experience. The more you do the better you get. As for using dog tooth cuts... i think they do have a place in tree felling but knowing when to implement them is the key thing. I reckon ive felled 3/4 trees with dog tooths in 12 years.
  6. Good thread and very thought provoking... December was the coldest month in over 100 years! The last 3 winters have been more severe than we in the U.k are used to. Is it the beggining of a trend or just a random pattern of weather? If it is to become the norm we seriously need to update our road, railway and aviation infrastructure. We are due an ice age i reckon...
  7. HAHA Goddam i love Arbtalk... Thanks boys. Il look into it...
  8. Can anybody recommend a tough pulling rope for ripping trees over on the farm? I cant stress the tough part enough!
  9. The guy above me is right the paperwork is a killer! The bueracraucy is unbelievable! I was running a DeVeg job in Wales last year working on 6 hour nightshifts and out of 6 hours we would get 2-3 hours work done. Put us well behind. You literally have to price and plan to the hour! Get a good one and you can make money get a bad one and you will never want another railway contract again. . . AVOID FOUNTAINS LIKE THE PLAGUE!
  10. This sounds fantastic! I would snap your hand off for a chance at something like that if i didnt have family commitments here in Dumfries. I hope you find the right guy to help you get this moving as it sounds very promising. One question, have you got a brochure/catalouge?
  11. Hope everything comes good for you Lorry. Im a new father myself and i commend your quick thinking.
  12. What a great chance to go do some work, meet new people and have a laugh! I cant believe they left you in the crap like that... Spot on title, LACKING IN MORAL FIBRE!
  13. No mate, we are further along the road. That place is tiny compared to us... He grows a few nice tree's though. Nice chap too. Good luck on smashing the landy up. Dalbeattie's night life is infamous! Il be around havin a beer 1 night this week might see you about.
  14. Ha its nowt to brag about! Your a long way from home mate. Business or pleasure?
  15. Didnt feel this one but we had one last week. Im near Dalbeattie southwest scotland.
  16. What you tinkering about with now lad? Happy new year Mr Happy
  17. Good show... We rotate our frasers on a 7 year cycle planted from a 2 year transplant. Had some great tree's season just gone.
  18. Il second that. Its a great site!
  19. Cut them leaders back or they'll never plump out and they will be a nightmare to shear the year before you harvest em... Sorry i couldnt resist!
  20. Hi Rob, always nice to meet another grower! We are harvesting 10k plus Fraser and 15k Nord next season. Planted 22k Nords last autum and another 30k this spring! Never ending... I see your loctaed in St helens, dont know where your trees are situated but have you had any problems with aphid down your way?
  21. Was it a Spruce? Really bad for needle retention. Nordman or Fraser Fir if you want the needles to stay on. We grow spruce and engleman but only recommend them for outside or in conservatories, porches etc.
  22. Reading the previous posts its easy to see that there is always going to be a argument in the skill difference and hence the money paid to both climbers and groundies. Lets just say that they are both as important as each other! Im sure all the gadget loving, premaddona climbers will have something to say about that. When you get a good climber and a good groundie working and communicating together it makes a job look fluid and smooth. I knew climbers that charged £180 a day and then moaned when they got down because i asked them to move some logs 20 yards... Is it me or has anyone else encountered climbers that think working on the deck is beneath them? pardon the shocking pun.
  23. I have recently changed my job so its not as applicable anymore. When i worked in tree surgery and site clearance i worked on the deck, i have never climbed and i never aspired to do so. But it is true that bitching on the deck felling, rigging, dragging and running the chipper is hard work... Its all about how useful you make yourself to your employer, i could maintain and fix chippers, tow machinery, drive/maintain/fix plant and forestry machinery, price jobs, liase with customers and other contractors and i was on top of my felling. I left my last job as a non climbing foreman on £115 a day. Im a desk jockey now but i know what im worth and what i can do.
