Basically all the groundwork has been completed save the drainage channels to take the rainwater. Site is levelled, sides graded, even the trees for screening are heeled in in situ, all that's missing is the building itself.

I've got the chance to buy a field close to home that included about an acre that had full industrial planning permission granted for a delivery company to relocate to. Said company went bust a few years back, but before they did they excavated the site for a massive shed they intended to construct to house their vehicles. From the time scale, the PP may well have lapsed, but what I need to know is whether their excavating and levelling the site constitutes as a 'Material Start' in planning terms - i.e would I need to reapply for planning permission or does the work carried out previously already validate the permission? Does the absence of any concrete foundations make a difference? Any advice gratefully received.

Does firewood actually dry in cord form?!!!

This works for me; Cut and bring back to yard in cord length, stack for two summers and cover with old tin sheets in September of second year, Then simply work your way with processor along the rows. Obviously needs plenty of space, but I find this method minimises handling. Only exception to this rule is with Oak and Chestnut which I log ASAP and season in crates. Never have a problem with seasoning, if the odd bit is still a bit green looking it gets chucked back for another 12 months. -

No, off the Glynn valley. My missus clocked them moving down from Callington and described them - you know, brand new Transits and caravans etc... and sure enough a group rolled up that evening in Lanlivery. Break in was at Lostwithiel but they're all over this area now looking for victims. My tolerance threshold for these people was pretty low to start with but to see a bloke who's basically had his livelihood taken away by these utter scum has lowered it further still.

Those lovable Irish traveller types have decided to head west and have been associated with the usual increase in the local crime statistics They came into a mate's yard near Bodmin for a scope, threatened the owner of a caravan park if he refused them free pitches for a few nights, and relieved a local builder I know of 3K's worth of tools. Police were informed of the theft of the tools while it was in progress, and we were all well impressed with their response - they immediately despatched a car which promptly arrived on the scene a mere 24 hours later. So, just a warning to any Cornish boys to keep their eyes and ears open. Oh, and don't expect any assistance from the boys in blue.

This is the crucial point, if you're working balls out with a clear objective in mind then it's totally understandable. I'm sure most peeps on here have done similar when starting out - I know me and the missus went through a tough time when our kids were young and I was working 6 days a week - as long as it doesn't become the norm. Otherwise, as people have already stated, you're merely living to work and that's not a healthy place to be long term.

Callaghan never said that - I'm afraid that like so much that's printed in 'The Sun' and that other great bastion of the truth 'The Daily Heil' - sorry, 'Mail' - if you repeat the lie often enough it becomes received wisdom. My faithful old Transit tipper has finally gone to that great scrapheap in the sky and I'm in a bit of a dilemma as to what to replace it with - mainly for firewood deliveries. Previously I used a Hi-lux which was great except for the fact that the fuel consumption was similar to the Tranny with half the payload and the hassle of hand-balling at the delivery end. It went everywhere though, and I do find that the Transit seems to only just fit on so many deliveries - I've lost count of the number of times I've had to fold the wing mirrors in - and I get a bit tired of negotiating entrances with bugger all room to play with. Sometimes I can't even get out the cab. Question is whether to go for another Tranny for bigger loads or a smaller, nimbler, more economical 2wd pick-up with one of those easy empty liner thingys. What do most peeps use for log deliveries? Thoughts welcome please...

Got a Barn Owl that's taken up residence in my tractor shed so I've knocked up a box for him that he's been investigating, so here's hoping. There's always at least a couple of Robins scrapping away when I'm using the processor for the right to take first dibs at the insects that are disturbed from the timber stacks, They take zero notice of either me or the racket kicked up by the machinery as they dive in inches away from the saw blade.

Tamworth's are fine but so are many of the rare breeds IMO. Over the years I've reared Saddlebacks, Gloucester Old Spots, Large Blacks and various large White X hybrids - all tasted delicious, there's really nothing to compare with home reared rare breed pork. Make sure they've got a warm, dry, draft free house. Doesn't have to be flash, old tin sheet is fine but make it solid, stick a couple of solid pallets on the floor to keep them off the wet ground. Train them to respect 'leccy fencing - it's a lot cheaper than conventional fencing and if you don't use electric then be prepared to make everything bomb proof. Pigs rarely jump over fences - though it can happen(!) - they prefer to go under or through obstacles and never underestimate how strong they are, you'll be surprised. If you're planning to, ahem, 'supplement' their diet with (cough) veg waste from your kitchen, just be aware that it's illegal under the crazy rules that our Ministry like to enforce without humour or compassion. Having said all that, I wish you good luck with what should hopefully turn out to be a rewarding and enjoyable undertaking. Don't expect to save a fortune on supermarket prices - or, indeed, anything - but then it's not supermarket pork you're producing. Don't forget to keep us all updated on your progress.

Doesn't say much for Cockerill's coaching ability when Twelvetrees could hardly get a start at Tigers (constantly overlooked for Staunton, FFS!) then moves to Gloucester, becomes first choice and walks straight in to the England set-up.

Plenty of good Whisky/Whiskey already suggested on this thread - you can now look forward to many hours of pleasure as you work out what style you prefer. Water is OK to add but make sure it's a still mineral water - tap water ruins a good dram -but I like mine neat. Regarding Whiskey, any fans of the Irish Pot-still style like Redbreast or Green spot?

Been struggling with a knee problem for a while now, it first flared up about 6 years ago resulting in an enormous swelling above the knee and total inflexibility. I tried a private sports injury specialist and chiropractor before eventually seeing the Quack and getting referred to an NHS physio who spoke far more sense than anyone else I saw. Anyways, after an X-Ray, it turned out the cartilage was almost worn away on my right knee and not much better on the left along with signs of osteoarthritis. He cheerfully informed me that the human body was only designed to last 40 years, and that with my work it would either be my back or my knees that went. Followed his exercise instructions and things slowly improved and have been OK up until just before last Xmas when it returned with a vengeance. I realise that I can't replace worn cartilage -and a knee replacement is out of the question - but does anyone have any good tips to negate the effects of arthritis? Tried Glucosamine and fish oil but to no affect. Anybody tried those magnetic strap things? Copper band? Something must work, it's getting a real pain in all senses of the word. Can't be crippled at 50, surely?

Whereas the squeaky clean Kiwi's would rather king-hit a player off the ball, a la Andrew Hore. I agree, gouging is a reprehensible act, but the Kiwi's are as guilty of thuggery as any other team, making their continual whining about the treatment meted out to 'Saint' Rutchie McCaw highly amusing. He is, as are all great opensides. Rutchie just happens to have a more efficient invisibility cloak than most. Oh, and regarding chavball , sorry, soccer being more popular than rugby - yeh, course it is. It's easy to play, simple to follow and requires minimum effort to understand. Rather like comparing draughts to chess, or saying more people read 'The Sun' than 'The Times'.

Is she a Malamute? A mate of mine has got one recently, handsome looking dog. I've got a Siberian x Collie who's an absolute star, very intelligent and totally loyal but they do need a lot of excercise or will run to fat - a situation I'm all to familiar with. My dogs (got a Kelpie x Collie as well) come to work and also get at least 4 miles walking a day, but will do 12 miles without breaking sweat.

I'm fine thanks, struggling on, you know what it's like. Business is down this year, nobody seems to have any money and every man and his transit seems to be doing logs. Still, least I've got no finance on gear, if I did it would be in old money it's all that ancient!
Druth gave Cambern the traditional Xmas stuffing on Boxing Day, see the Squareheads have a good young 10 called David Mankee, any relation? He's young, talented, good looking....er, OK, maybe not!
