  1. oops forgot to add "last pic"
  2. similar here, clicking unread posts as normal all "today's posts" appear with the all being noted as changed since last viewing but new posts in bold and older posts just normal text, gets a bit confusing as you can't see which are the new posts when you try to click on the "newest" post??
  3. Felled a large mature ash the other week and went back today to cut it up:thumbdown: (another story), anyway, it had a few nice burrs on the main stem and i cut one off as the wood looks pretty:biggrin: The size here in the pics is about 18-20" by 18-20" by about 8-9" deep at its thickest point. How much would it cost me for someone out here to turn it on a lathe into a nice ornamental plate come bowl (like in the last pic but shallower)? What do i need to do to the wood first? Does it need seasoning, if so how? I'm in West lancashire so would need someone with a lathe pretty near to me (within 20 miles or so), and how quick could someone do it (if it didn't need seasoning)?
  4. you sorted or do you still need one?
  5. Mmm shiny things, i want one
  6. ah balls:blush:
  7. Arbtalk has changed again:biggrin: instead of time and date of post above avatar, it now says how long ago post was e.g 1 hour, 3 hours, 1 day etc! What do i win:lol:
  8. My Two pence worth.... Some of the current suggestions or answers (and even whats been reported in the press) as to what to do next have been pathetic and rubbish (IMO)! The ash trees that we are now breeding need to be bred from a diverse genetic base whilst circumventing any clones. These new breeds will hopefully breed with existing ash trees that are possibly resistant (even partially resistant) which will further produce TOUGHER offspring. A diverse genetic base has a better chance of survival in the long run, way past when we are gone:biggrin: Destroying (existing) trees is a big no-no, OK, we may have to deal with young trees that haven't made it but leaving the trees to NATURAL processes can bring better results than anything we could muster up. As for injecting (from what i've heard) but isn't it worth a try? Surely it would be cheaper to inject say 20 mature ash in an avenue than to fell and dispose? It may only work on a few limited cases but may give tree owners/managers a bit of time to consider further options, this however would not be a long term solution. Tend to the dead trees, especially ones near highways, pedestrian areas, in risk of damage etc, BUT use this to promote arboriculture. As an industry we need to stick together and work against the (more than likely) profiteers and the cowboys out to make a quick buck. It may even bring this industry to the forefront of peoples minds without skewed views from the media, we may even get joe public one day asking for an "arb"

  24. I don't understand in how people can think its easy to run a business in arb, when never even actually worked in the industry before. Get some experience (couple of years) working for others as a brash rat/groundie/trainee climber first before even thinking about running a business, please, for the safety of, you, others and the trees themselves. And why do people think they should get money handed down to them on a plate, when the most successful people in this industry have worked their way up through shear hard graft. Sounds like I'm trying to put a downer on your ambitions, I'm not, just do things the right way:biggrin: Sent from my Galaxy S2
