  1. LOLER tickets are great when the proverbial hits the fan.......there are 2 main groups ofpeople who can benefit from LOLER tickets......the testers, and the lawyers.....no offence to testers, but its like an MOT on a car- it only has to pass on the day of the test. If i get my rope passed, and the next day, or even later the same day, nick it with a silky, but fail to notice during the climb, then maybe the rope fails a short while later, the loler ticket isnt worth the paper its written on.
  2. Yeah- I thikn that if you really start using and abusing these disco 3's etc inm the workplace then they may suffer. TBH i really believe that the last truly decent landrover products for work were the 300 tdi defenders- but that is not relevant to this thread. I reckon that as a mainly family vehicle the disco 3 would be fine. A few on here have them and seem pleased...They are primarily a car though.(BFG dont even make a mud terrain for their 18" rim!!)
  3. I think it does Smith. I reckon the idea being that if one is a qualified arb, then one is more likely to have had experience in using the kit, or at least had some more in-depth knowledge of how the kit may be used in the field....maybe?
  4. They are all much of a muchness Ian. The mitsi/ nissan/ toyota brigade all seem the same, and are all failry reliable, comfy roomy and quiet. The ranger/ mazda is a touch more agricultural unless you go for the poncier (for want of a better word) wildtrax, and the landrover is more agricultural again- although the new defenders have all the mod cons and are more car-like than ever before, albeit with the agricultural ability that landrover is reknowned for. Given that you are only occasionaly going to use it for work duties, then I wouldnt spend the enourmous sum on a defender to not use it to its capabilities, esp as you are about 12 foot tall. I reckon, having seen Steve Bullmans nissan, that that would be a very good choice......unless you look at disco3 of course...Obviously it goes without saying that the landrover will out perform and outlast any of the above, but I honestly think that it isnt what you are after.
  5. The Most likely cause, (assuming all your rods ARE straight) is that it has had a new sttering box, and that it hasnt been fitted correctly. The drop arm will need to come off, and centralise the box (equal amount of turns each way without steerin arms attached and wheels central) and then reattach the drop arm when its correct. Piecs of pee.

Great day here- mammoth tidying up spree in the barn.....feels great to get rid of years of crap ready for the move, and rounded the day off with adjustments to the chip box on the landy (been meaning to do it for ages) abd then looking at new place to live. (its only a static for now, but has a yard with it and is quite nearby, so thats good!)
  7. My loler inspector is also a Lantra trainer, and has been contracting for over 35 years. His attitude I really like, and is similar to some points raised earlier, in so far as he feels it is very important, nay essential, to have a working knowledge of, or at least full technical understanding of, all current kit. He does arb kit only, as this is the field he has spent his life working in. For example he explained to me why my Yale split tail would fail due to a nick in the outer sheath, as this was integral to the working strength of that particular rope, and wnet on to unpick some of the material which rapidly made it obvious why he was failing it. He went on to explain the on another rope (I THINK it was a marlow rope that i retired long since) the nicks were not relevant to the inherent strength of the rope, as the strngth was in the inner core, thus could be passed on that test. This is what i mean by a full technical understanding of the gear. Now he hasnt used/ doesnt use tachyon, but has read and understood its make-up (i quizzed him on this specifically) in order that he can realistically judge its condition, as the test is far more than just a visual and 'touch' test. He also explained how ropes should feel to me, and what differences in stiffness and diameter meant etc etc. I think this is where the competence part comes in- as Gollum posted basically.

  23. Saw one working at capel year before last, but it was awful. it was huge, but they were only shredding what looked like rail from post and rail fencing (4x2) and it was killing the machine!! The throat looked enourmous on the machine in comparison. Not at all impressive.
