  1. MASSIVE thank you to Andy for the parcel I received today, containing a long sought after kids harness for my son, and on top of that he threw in a rope bag too, and refuses to let me give him anything for it, so Thanks mate you're a star:thumbup:
  2. I find that milling is very profitable. Been milling larch recently, and i reckon that i have made something like a 400% return on the wood, after costs. Milling on site i can make the same if not more money than tree surgery, with the same if not less outlay, and i am about £20/hr cheaper than the next man. I reckon its a good earner.

  4. I reckon thats he best way forward. It is a great truck for what it does, but a winch would totally sort it. You picked up those new BFGs yet?

I totally agree with what you and John say about landies and other trucks, i just feel that the defender is the end product of 50 years of building what essentially started out as mini tractors, and havent really moved on, hence what is really good about them is there bare bones- chassis, gearing, adaptability, slowness, unrivalled (when in standard form) off road capabilities at the cost of crap electrics, comfort (for larger people), build quality in bodywork and fittings (all the bits that arent the trator bit basically). I think the point i was trying to make is not at all that rangers etc are crap, just that when really abused and worked hard etc, such as in the environment Dave does a lot of work in described above, in my opinion, and anecdotal evidence suggests, landrovers last and perform better. I honestly believe that diff locks could get you into far more difficulties than out of, you may be prepared to push the vehicle so much further, loaded heavily, stressing over the job blah blah, and then get really really stuck/ broken etc For 'sport' off roading i think that is irrelevant, but in a work environment it is. I have just deleted the other half of this post as it was getting even more rambling......

Dave- just buy a flippin landy ffs- by the time you have done all this to your ranger you will probably be no better off off road than a standard landy, and locking diffs will set you back well into 4 figures by the time you have bought good ones and had them fitted. Most require alterations to diff pans and drilling etc etc, plus operating systems etc etc, and wihtout gettign into a 'which vehicle is best' argument, you are going to fit all this gubbins to a ford made thing. They just arent designed for serious off road work mate, they fall to pieces, and on top of that, i have seen landcruisers with all diff locks locked and totally stuck, and another one the same sailing by with just the centre locker in. Its down to the driver usually, and relying on them can get you into FAR more trouble than they will get you out of IME. Just trying to save you £1000's mate.

  8. Hehe- a LARGE proportion of firewood sold round me, and i would say 99% of the nets, are larch, usually green too. I know a local guy who wont buy anything else, and just feeds a processor into a huge hookloader skip thng for the garages and what have you to bag and sell. He also sells by the net, and he is mega busy with a constant stream in and out of his yard....

  10. Woodland down here has made 5-7k regularly, esp in small aprcels with no plannig etc etc.

  12. BTW if any of you need your logs checking for nails, send them down here and ill put them on the mill- that band will find them EVERY time without fail:thumbdown::laugh1:
  13. Whatever you go for, it needs to be at least 100cc really, or the size you can mill will be very restricted. If i run the 48" bar with the alaskan i can just about get a 39" cut, maybe a bit more if i were to remove the felling dogs, which TBH is a little more than is commonly required. However, if i were to run a smaller saw, such as a 100cc saw, i wouldnt expect it to cope with more than a 36" bar, leading to a max cut of 27". This in itself isnt a problem, as thats a pretty common size log, but it means you are restricted, and the saw would be running at its limit all the time. I honestly thing you would be better getting the biggest set up you can from the outset to give you maximum flexibility. Having said that, with lots of turning and thought, it is possible to attack logs of greater diameter than bar length, its just that i find the hassle of setting everything up every time you roll the log makes this a TOTAL pain, and in my opinion it is just TOO time consuming. I suppose my attitude would be that by the time you buy a 100cc saw, and the mill etc, you might as well spend that little bit extra and get the big boys. I would also be slightly wary of 2nd hand machines for this application, as it can be very wearing on the saw.

  17. Posch is good gear, but i waited for nearly half an hour at ConFor to speaf with the posch guy, to be ignored while he had a chat with his mate. Needless to say i was NOT impresed and will NEVER consider giving my money to that company, regardless of the reputation the gear has.

I think the terror stories come from those who DO know whats what, and those that dont know dont have a comparison so are happy in the assumption that pronlems are inherent with the vehicles........maybe. When you come and see me Dave, bring your sled as my road is sheet ice, and we've all been out there today having a right larf!!
