I think that there may be an element of envy maybe.......maybe the ones who cant do anything else are the ones bitching about thiose of us who do a variety of work....At the moment i am doing some stonework for a couple of days a week (took on a contract last year when work was a bit thin, but try very hard to avoid stonework nowadays), did a days sawmilling on friday last, and have done some tree work on the other days. Variety is the spice of life, and i have a large amount of bills to pay each month (as im sure most of us do).

I agree to a certain extent, other than that this govt wasnt democratically ellected, for examples sake, and also the set up of VOSA was never intended to be the way it is. It was a non governmental organisation that had to justify its own existence by making a target figure of fines. If they didnt have that background i wouldnt have a problem with them.

I am going to get a load of t shirts made up with VOSSA on them, using the waffen 'ss' sign where i have put the double s.....or using their lettering i thought of 'tossa'. I honestly believe that the more we pander to their demands, the more stupid rules they will make up. Why are we all on here giving in to this crap. The only reason they can get away with so much legislation is because we as a nation are too f-ing spineless to stand up to it, which gives them the green light to carry on in this vein.

I was somewhat disappointed the other day to learn that the Delabole Slate Quarry (very famous cornish quarry, deepest in europe or something yada yada...) uses a sand blasting machine to carve name plates!!! They still split roof slates by hand FFS!!!!!

The husky is a very durable piece of kit, and as has been said reliable and basic etc etc. Before reading the other posts i would have said steer clear of electric winches for log pulling, especially stuck logs. I used to burn out the solenoids on an X9 superwinch, even when fitting the 'albright' (better quality ) ones. This is why i ended up with a PTO winch, but from earlier posts i would say that it would be a good choice.

Sorry to have missed this one- sounds like a good time was had allround. Busy busy busy I am happy to say, plus 2 shows is my limit really, and capel and the APF are they this year. Hopefully show my ugly mug at next years do.

Hadnt thought of that- I was under the impression that you shouldnt use softwoods or sycamore? I take it you have tried cedar? Do you put the wood in a box then the fish on that or straight on the coals or what mate? Get a biscuit tin, pierce the lid, and put a good handful of whatever wood you use, plus some herbs- fairly strong ones such as rosemary etc are fine- in the bottom of the tin. Put a wire rack about halfway up, put your fish on that skin side down as applicable, and for a couple of steaks like above, its about 10 minutes over the flame on the hob.

I've recently got into smoking fish at home, with a biscuit tin hot smoker, and beech sawdust. Tonights is tuna. I also tried trout and salmon steaks. If yo havent tried it then i would highly recommend it.

Wow man- i had forgotten that you had done that. Its brilliant. I reckon a busmans holiday is required for me, and you can give me some pointers. We have mostly granite and slate down here, other than on the Lizard Peninsular, which has examples of every kind of rock there is, including serpentine!!

That is, as i have said before, stunning Dean, I LOVE that wall, and that stone, and if i am passing your way i will be bringing hammer and chisel mate!! Really really nice detail and tight joints, with everything level- what more could one ask for.

The fireplace was part of 10 months work and 700 tonnes of stone on that job. Back then we were charging 150 a day (6 years ago) and the whole job cost about 4 or 5 mill to build. i think our labour for the whole job was 134k. The job we have been on recently (first stonework for 3 years) we are charging 175 per square metre of face, including sand and cement, but not the cut stone.

Glastobollox. I love the fact that we were having the kliving daylights beaten out of us and our vehicles in the 90's whilst the levellers were chanting about battle of the beanfield on stage......I went once- the capitalist dream in all its glory. Needless to say i wont be going again. Those of you that are into it enjoy though.

I have very very few pics since my PC died......here are a few hedges we did years ago, and a bit of facework- but the idea is the same. When i finish the job we are doing at the mo (its a long story, but i was quiet when i took it on) ill probably put up some pics to bore you with.
