  1. Hi All, after a lot of thinking have decided to take on an apprentice, I have it down to two local guys as it stands but have decided to extend this process to include arbtalk members. We are a small company focusing on quality and client relationships, we are involved in Arboricultural, Forestry and Landscape works, we don't do council or highway works but focus on private clients and National Parks. We are open to any body in the industry or looking to join the industry 30/31 an advantage but looking more for the right attitude. What we're looking for A willingness to work hard under all conditions Ambition to progress higher in company Ability to turn up on time fresh faced and up for the job A sense of humour Smart appearance Common sense What we offer £2.60 per hour but paid college fees for timber and forestry apprenticeship On the job leaning with focus on progression not just dragging brash Continuous traing including many CS, First Aid, Mewp, Atv etc Company vehicle (after six months employment) Accommodation available If any body is interested in this position can you pm me or email [email protected] Regards, Sam
  2. Another one for invoice to go, also uses PayPal.
  3. It's got a very short stem before crown develops, very straggly crown as well will be about 80% height removal. If done will be ASAP, sits over a French drain but no real reason for doing it other than light to farm house. I have made no recommendations as none are needed but advised that I would start with 20% reduction. I was just wondering if a well maintained pollard would be of better benefit to the garden in the long run and personally think might look quite nice. Sam
  4. Hi all, just a bit of advice really I know limes make good pollards as street trees. But has anyone pollarded one over 1000dbh, how does it recover is here to much stress on tree following pollard. There will be about 80% removal. Cheers, Sam
  5. Berlingo does well as a smart looking run around, cheap to run as well.
  6. Just got a few in from another sponsor as they were the only ones doing them, really good quality though. They are always useful things to have on site. Would you be able to get some indicating "walking on site to see what we're doing could be bad for your health" maybe with a tree surgeon shouting at walker in silhouette.
  7. Meant to say cant sack you, typo. Also there is a cost in employing somebody even down to supplying payslips I'm sure if he could be would keep it SE.
  8. Well it's been a few weeks now, and have been really impressed. Pulls really well even up steep slopes in the mud pulling trailer. It will pull the 150 without to much problems but have not dared take it down any slopes or on the road. I don't think ill go back to manual gear box the epc and auto are really usable and love the a ability to select 2/4wd. I think this size quad would struggle with 1 ton trailer it's not though lack of power but weight of the quad losing grip, also the tow afar on quads is low so you would struggle to get big trailer on the back of it. The biggest problem is brakes with a quad. It if you know and respect this you lean how to drive them. Sam
  9. He's right to put you on the books and probably not really that keen on doing it as it would not be in his benefit. Look at it this way he would now be responsible for your liability, your PPE, holiday, sickness, Paternity, pension, he can just sack you if you mess up. He was probably advised to do this due to the impending crack down on casual labour the list goes on. With the tax side of it you would be able to opt out of the NI for SE work as you would be covering it with the employed work, your SE tax bill will be less as you overal expenses will be the same but your SE income will be less, you will also be able to off set tax paid in PAYE from SE earnings. I do know a fair bit about this as when I started I was SE and PAYE and now in the same position as your main contractor and with Universal Credit eventually being roled out there will be a lot more of this going on. Maybe CIS system would be of better use to this industry.
  10. My personal experiences are the wealthiest clients I have would appear working class to most and the ones who appear upper class don't have two pounds to rub together. I think old money is dying out and a desperate few are clinging on to the old world lifestyle whilst loading up credit cards etc, new money is formed with out view of class so cash is never wasted on keeping up appearances. I was working with my uncle once and met one of his clients, didn't think much of him just another client, surprised me to find out he owned 80% of the local comercial buildings. I'm proberly like most of the guys on here see myself as working class but wife and kids more middle class, mainly because when we go in holiday they are by the pool and I'm looking for a job to fill the week in.

  14. I've recently shelved plans for a mog due some major constraints for use in the work I do. I'm now looking into the tractor market, what I need is something which will climb a 1 in 4 off road towing timber trailer, pull a trailer at decent speed on the road and run processor or chipper. Size needs to be quite narrow and Turing circle needs to be quite good, ground clearance is not that important and will need to have plenty of low end grunt, it also needs to be able to mount a timber crane on it some how. I know I may be describing a vehicle that doesn't exist but what are people's (owners or operators only please) thoughts on using an mb trac to fill this gap, what are they like to live with and where are the limitations, where do they excell and what are running costs like. Thanks Sam
